I had a similar problem a few days ago, where I lost some progress on a Smoothstone bridge network I was building to criss-cross a lake near the Western Woods, and it took quite a while for me to smelt all that Smoothstone.
Also, if ever Marble is implemented, PLEASE let it be made from smelting Gravel. I've got a Double Chest COMPLETELY FILLED with Gravel just waiting to be used somehow.
Also also, before I started my bridge-building project, I had 3 full Double Chests worth of Cobblestone, and I had quite a sizeable Coal Bunker. Now i'm down to my last Chestload, and my Coal Bunker's a few stacks short.
Also also also, if anyone wants to see my Warehouse in my main base, i'll post the pics.

and besides, there are mods for beta that can do the same as creative, such as insta-removing blocks

If you did things right, the modified .class files modify the game without you needing to turn it on anywhere, although to disable the mods you'll need to revert to a backup of minecraft.jar.

That's why I finally said "fuck it" and used MCEdit to carve out my Great Hall. I made a TON of progress on it, using up 3-4 diamond picks and then the game crashed. Reloaded, picks were still gone but the shit I dug out had returned.
