Some games are absolutely gorgeous, and have a fabulous art design. BioShock and Mass Effect were both games that I considered underrated, as they were both very colorful, artistic, and realistic, not to mention captivating.
cuz when i waste my time on meaningless shit i usually would prefer it to be pretty good meaningless shit and if it's life-changing like music or movies then even the better but even after playing all the games i have i can't say i was ever really changed by them, but to be fair video game developers never really strive for that anyway
i can't really think of anything i've ever seen done or heard that "changed my life" to be honest i don't think that changing your life based on anything is a particularly intelligent thing to do you know except for BJORK
Pretty much this. Also, if we want games to be taken seriously, we'll have to massacre EA marketing department. I'm still furious about that fucking Dead Space commercial.
That commercial made it seem as if Dead Space were a space alien game targeted for children. Seriously..."nobody pukes on me"??
I'm torn between the "Yes" and "Yes, but there are some games that should not be". I think of games as collaborations. Collaborations between graphic artists, programmers, story tellers and musicians. The creations they make are often thought-out interactive stories, often with immense amount of immersion and with worlds that fit the gameplay both in terms of theme and music. To me, these are an artform above paintings, theater, composition and movies; these are the masterpieces of great minds putting their talents together. Then again there are also some things that have no point what so ever but to just be random fun, and I actually despise the games that only exists as attempts to make games mimic art. Games created with the intention of being "art" are usually just random garbage with pretty graphics, real art is the ability to make the receiver to feel emotionally involved and wanting more.
If a guy squirting paint out of his arse onto a canvas can be considered an artistic genius then it certainly makes games art.
Minecraft.Hurr derp.

I tend to think Bioshock is a great example of art.
That commercial made it seem as if Dead Space were a space alien game targeted for children. Seriously..."nobody pukes on me"??
to be fair dead space isn't exactly a film noir masterpiece
Artistic games are art.
above
Lol wut?
how can you decide something is over something when it comes to artistic expression it's a bit of a odd concept
how can you decide something is over something when it comes to artistic expression it's a bit of a odd concept
As I said, it's a collaboration of great minds putting their talents together to create a masterpiece. That to me is an artform above many others. [editline]21st March 2011[/editline] Their works also create an immersion that is not present in most other forms of media. [editline]21st March 2011[/editline] It has the artistic expression of pictures, the acting of theater, the immersion of storytelling, the emotion of music, the fun of playing, and the effort of all of these united. Games are awesome, to not call them art is silly.
movies, surprisingly enough, are actually made by more than one person in fact many people are involved in the making of a movie
But they lack the same kind of immersion. You watch a movie to be told a story, you play a game to experience it.
Anything that can be considered art will eventually be considered art. This has happened countless times over the course of history, and is going to happen again in this case. It's inevitable really.
Games are art aswell as entertainment. Some are more or less artistic and some are more or less entertaining though.
People who spend all their time saying X is art is an art in itself.
Yes I do think videogames are art, in general, low art. Sometimes high. Icepick Lodge are the first people I'll point to when someone asks if vidya is art. [editline]21st March 2011[/editline]
But they lack the same kind of immersion. Of course it is... People sit for months and sketch, draw, model, and paint conceptual art. People write storylines, scripts, dialogue and music... all of which are art. People animate game characters, create entire worlds, texture those worlds and bring them to life. If that's not art, I don't know what is.
I hate arguments like: "Hur. If music, books and movies are art, then why not games, because they have similiar things?" I could still make a CGI animation or a model in Blender without putting it into any spefific game and it would be art. But what really makes games stand out from other forms of art? INTERACTIVITY! And as absurd as it is, the interactivity is the last part we talk about games when it comes games being art.
What makes me rage is people who say that programming is not art. I want to fucking strangle them.

Don't you hate it when developers mis-interpret what interactivity means though? And instead of being able to change the story through both small and not so small decisions, what you instead get is you having rotate an analog stick to make your guy wave his hands to carry on with the story.
*go forward* *cutscene* *go forward* *game over*
Don't forget press X to interaction.
Don't forget press X to interaction.
I'm thinking quick time events.
Totally depends on the game
I'm thinking quick time events.
Press X repeatedly to advance the plot in a linear fashion.
