No ironsights breh.
I know :( I figured that out shortly after I figured out that there was no way in hell I was fitting through that training booth window. All in all though, I'm liking the game so far. I went into that tunnel next to the back entrance of the statue expecting a secret way in though. I got some cool stuff nonetheless. One quick question though. If I were to level up my pistol skill, would the mini-crossbow make enemies unconscious faster? All they do is run around for 6 seconds shooting me, alerting everyone else, and THEN drop down.
Get a headshot bro
Don't bother with teh dartgun, either stealth and avoid them or use probe with silenced pistol.
Hopefully this game isn't a disappointment!
Don't bother with teh dartgun, either stealth and avoid them or use probe with silenced pistol.
I ALWAYS carry my trusty mini-crossbow. Quite frankly I often can't manage without the damn thing. In my opinion it's often the most useful weapon in my inventory. It makes for good non-lethal takedowns and has just enough punch for a silent kill. Also, it takes up such a small amount of space that there isn't much reason to not carry one. As a nice bonus it works underwater and doubles as a light source with flare darts. A friend of mine saw me using the mini-crossbow all the time, but when he tried to do what I was doing he was pretty much miserable for a good portion of the early parts of the game. Eventually he just ditched the mini-crossbow in favor of a silenced pistol and prod and was much better off for it. The problem with telling people how to play Deus Ex is that more often than not they just get stuck playing the game in a way that works well for you but causes unnecessary frustration for them.
One quick question though. If I were to level up my pistol skill, would the mini-crossbow make enemies unconscious faster? I try to use it from behind cover and retreat as soon as the dart hits. I actually prefer tranq darts over the silenced pistol because you only have to hit once anywhere, and after that you're free go where you want since don't have to keep them in your sight anymore. However, like I said earlier, I have seen others who try to do this and frustrate themselves miserable. If it continues to be a problem then you may be better off trying something else.
[sp]How do you save Paul? I could only think of one thing: hiding being the bookcase while he killed all the dudes. He did it and survived but he still turns up dead later on.[/sp]
[sp]How do you save Paul? I could only think of one thing: hiding being the bookcase while he killed all the dudes. He did it and survived but he still turns up dead later on.[/sp]
[sp]First things first, do not abandon him by going out the window, this automatically triggers his death most of the time. Whatever you do, you're going out the front door. It is supposed to be ok to go out the window if he tells you he'll be fine, but it's a bit glitchy in the vanilla game and sometimes doesn't work properly. (Shifter mod fixes this). [/sp] [sp]If all else fails, keep in mind that if you die while fighting alongside Paul you'll end up in the prison cell just like if you made it to the subway station and he will usually survive. Some people find doing a suicide rush here can be pretty good option since it allows Paul to survive and saves ammunition by ending what will eventually turn out to be an unwinnable fight (provided to retrieve all your equipment later).[/sp]
I don't see what was so difficult about the first level, breezed through it on medium... Though I AM enjoying the game, thanks FP.
I don't see what was so difficult about the first level, breezed through it on medium... Though I AM enjoying the game, thanks FP.
I tend to breeze through it as well. However, I've seen other people play who have a hard time with it for legitimate reasons. I think what a lot of people find confusing is the way the maps and their contents are arranged. Even when compared to other open ended shooters like System Shock 2 and Bioshock, the level design in Deus Ex is rather odd. While the System Shock/Bioshock philosophy is to have multiple solutions to problems, they are usually arranged in well organized fashion so that the players can usually see all their options and decide among them. Deus Ex is not as nice and neat. Deus Ex offer multiple solutions for just about everything, even more so than games the System Shock series or Bioshock, but they are often very scattered, not as well defined, not nearly as obvious. Most of the time in Deus Ex, you are not given clean and clear options A B C D like in System Shock. In Deus Ex you usually see A and B as well two or three different variations of both, but you only have some idea of how C might work and you probably missed D entirely. The map design follows this as well. They're pretty much arranged so that there will always be parts of the map that the players will never see even through multiple paythroughs [sp]To use an example, one of the earlier missions requires you to find a way into an NSF warehouse and disable a generator. As far as I'm aware, there are four major routes to the warehouse. Three of them branch out from a small building at the corner of the map, and that's about as nice and clean as all three of these approaches get, as they only get less self contained and more open ended afterwards. One route involves taking the ladder just outside the building to the roof and going over the rooftops, with numerous snipers in your way. This way typically leads through a dark building and generally takes you to a raised platform that connects with the warehouse about halfway up the wall, and from there you can either desend to ground level or enter through the roof. The second is an alternative rooftop path that that involves taking the passage out of the basement and taking an elevator. This one eventually merges with the path above, but it starts out much lower and makes it a bit avoid having to take the snipers out from long range, though it is slightly more confusing to navigate. The third path involves jumping the fence and approaching at ground level. This is the shortest path to the warehouse, but in my opinion it is the more difficult to get past due to the security cameras and the fact that it pretty much inserts you where the NSF have concentrated most of their guards. I can't say much about the fourth path which I assume goes through the sewer and comes out at a manhole in an alleyway near the NSF warehouse. Unfortunately, I only know it exists due to finding that manhole, but it is locked from the other side. I have yet to find where that particular route actually starts. Once you get to the warehouse, variety of entry methods are available to you no matter which path you took, but some may be extremely hard to get to depending which path you took. You can descend down into the building from the roof using the stairs and either stealth or brute force your way to the ground floor from there to take out the generator. Obviously this is easier to do if you came via the rooftops. You can also enter at ground level through the front door. Again, it is the shortest, but you'll also encounter the most resistance this way. There is also a basement entrance that can get you to the generator room while encountering very few guards, but it is protected by a lot of passive and electronic security and doesn't get you past the guards who are near the generator itself. Another option, and perhaps my favorite, is a tinted window about halfway up the side of the building. You can get to it from either ground level or the roof. This window can be either broken. It leads directly into a computer room that controls the cooling, which when shut off will cause the generator to malfunction without requiring explosives. You an also get to this room if you entered through the roof or ground level, but the door requires a bit of lockpicking. This is probably the easiest way for stealth players to take, but it is also the least obvious and if it's your first playthrough then you're probably only going to find it if you paid close attention to the layout of the building. These methods are not mutually exclusive and overlap a lot. You can start from the rooftop and descend down the ladders behind the building past the guards and enter through the basement for example. [/sp] Most of the game is pretty much constructed like this with the exception of places where they do have to herd up into spots for the story to proceed. If you take two isolated players and have them play through Deus Ex, chances are both of them will find very different ways to complete the same objectives and will find areas in the maps that the other player probably won't see even after multiple playthroughs simply because that option isn't as obvious to them. On the negative side, a lot of people find it extremely confusing and be fooled into thinking they must complete an impossible task when there are much more reasonable alternatives available. Again, as a rule of thumb you're usually not even aware half the options available to on your first playthough, and probably won't be for the next or the one after. In fact, even after multiple playthroughs over the years I still find new stuff in this game that I didn't see previously.

This thread made me reinstall Deus Ex. I haven't played it in a year or so. Redownloaded my favorite mods (that are released :P) But I read that there are some problems with the latest shifter. Damn, that mod is so useful I'll download the version I had a while back (1.8.1)
giant post
Ye I love how the levels are set out. It's hard to find games like that, mostly it's just open world games with multiple routes, but it doesn't feel the same.
I love this game. It's definatley up there with System Shock 2.
Yeah. I used to think this game was terrible. I couldn't get past thefirat level. And then I gave it a second chance and I got to the city and realized it is so god damn boring. I really don't get why you people like bad games.
You're fucking retarded, I love this game.
Why would you bump this horrible thread god dammit
Why would you?
God damn it, I just reinstalled it. Thanks a lot you fuckers! In other news, why do I always forget to actually beat this? I always get ADD'ed midway through and switch to something else. Or the sequel.
It gave me lemon lime
Overrated game.
You're fucking retarded, I love this game.
Ha that's pretty funny that you like it now. What changed?
I must admit that i have been recently disappointed in the performance of unatco.
Ha that's pretty funny that you like it now. What changed?
Mainly I quit sucking. But I dunno, I have more time and it's just much more engrossing. However, [sp]Escaping the Majestic-12 base is kinda harshing my mellow[/sp] but I'm almost out.
"HDTP will probably be finished soon!" haven't laughed this hard in a week
I finished playing through this game for the first time two days ago. It actually took me 42 hours to complete it, that's an awesome amount of playtime and it could still easily go on for longer without feeling stretched out.
Oke.. Shall we leave this to this thread? because i wanted to make another DVT thread about Deus Ex (Check the Populous 3 and the Dungeon Keeper 2 ones) otherwise its a waste of time to make it :3:
I don't get why this game is so popular. I tried playing it, and I was bored shitless. It was good for it's time, sure, but that doesn't mean everybody in the world should circlejerk over it.

Very very very wrong, the first levels are very boring, the reason why this game is so freaking awesome is later in the game and the story. go play it again :colbert:

This game is overrated beyond belief.
