How would it not? Mods add a lot to the lifespan of a game.
I still play BF2 vanilla, if a game is good enough I can forgive a lack of mod tools.
Meh, nearly everything that happened in the gameplay part looked very scripted.
Then go play FarCry 2.
Looks like an alt to me.

What the fuck did I miss?
The gameplay (I assume at least) after the earthquake in the "leaked" video. A very short part shows the inside piloting of a jet.
How would it not? Mods add a lot to the lifespan of a game.
I'm saying that BF3 will still be a good game even without mod tools. It's not like I don't want mod tools, I just don't see it happening and don't think it will affect the game in a negative way.
Then go play FarCry 2.
So all of the sudden just because this is BF3 and you guys are high on hype, scripted destruction is super impressive and never before seen?
The gameplay (I assume at least) after the earthquake in the "leaked" video. A very short part shows the inside piloting of a jet.
Oh yeah, that. I saw that.

I don't think it affects it in a negative way either, just not affect it in a positive one (it's not a minus, it's a missed plus).
Personally I don't want the destruction in MP to be on the scale of the scripted collapse of whole blocks of flats. It would most likely end up in people trying to collapse buildings as fast as possible to get a dozen quick kills from people getting crushed.
Then the rest of the round will be played in a pile of rubble (which will despawn in a few moments)
Controlled, yet cool looking limited destruction is fine in my book.
edit:
For those who disagree, you do realize destruction like that will most likely not be even possible, a fully open block of flats/etc. getting crushed? Lets say they can collapse (aka BC2 way, but in more detail = destructible floors, maybe staircases, too), but in a vertical way, not blocking whole streets or pushing down other buildings, that I can believe is possible and that's something I'd love to see even with big buildings!

Where is said video?
I think destruction should be toggleable but enabled by default.

If the maps are as huge as in the screenshot, which they probably will have to be to be able to fly jets in it, then that won't be a problem. Dice said they're focusing on scale this time around. :v:
And also, there's a lot of firepower required to topple buildings IRL.

Well it would be awesome if after a long and fierce battle the city is reduced to a pile of rubble resembling some post-apocalyptic landscape. But yeah, I don't want that after 3 minutes of playing and everyone ignoring the objectives to demolish everything in sight. I do want full destruction (though full destruction probably won't be in), they should limit the player's amount of explosives instead of limiting destruction then.
Am I? It was a serious question. Do you really think not having mod tools is better?
He said the game wouldn't be worse without it. Meaning it would be bad for us if there were no mod tools but the quality of the game wouldn't diminish because of it which makes complete sense.

Yeah, the only real way to get killed by collapsing buildings in BC2 was to mortar strike or sit there and shoot it with a tank for 2 minutes or so.
Buildings have strong support beams IRL. Technically, 9/11 shouldn't have happened be it not for cheap, money saving under-the-table construction.

That said, a lot of firepower. Perhaps airstrikes, UAVs and piles and piles of C4.
I'm probably going to join empty servers just to topple buildings. :v:

Why not just make an empty LAN game? No lag.
One thing I'd love to have in BF3 is Bunker Busters. Just drop one and watch the bodies of 50 wookies fly out of the windows 5 floors below (or even more, considering BB penetrate bunkers, they ought to penetrate lots of floors of a normal building).
Just heavy ordnance in general would be awesome, sadly without the commander to call it in, who the hell gets to use it? Even just a mortar strike is too much for each player of a certain class to have (like wookies in BC2) and killstreaks are out of the question (keep that shit away from BF).
Oh and by heavier ordnance I do not mean MOABs and nukes, just stuff like artillery strikes, BBs and such.

BC1 had artillery guns that you could shoot across the map.

Well I don't know about the US military, but at least around here (Finland) fresh officer candidates during the military service (and in possible real combat situations) and even us NCOs (I've received thorough artillery spotter training) are the main personnel designating targets for artillery on a regular basis. Mortars are even more common, everyday shit I say.
But unless you have a similar system in the USA, just ignore this :v:

The problem there would be if you're able to find a server which is empty
Actually consoles are the powerhouse of the gaming industry because they are for mainly casual gamers which just about everybody is. Optional destruction is impossible because it shall be serverside and it will be in MP, with buildings collapsing and such.
