LMGs like the M249 might have a tenancy to overheat due to the huge rate of fire, lightweight nature of the weapon, and massive volume of ammo, but with most modern GPMGs (M240, PKM) can have thousands of rounds put through them before their performance is affected badly. usually you'll run out of ammo before the weapon has overheated enough to melt, expand, or warp.
My hope is that LMGs will be more prone to cone of fire and overheating, but when I use a manly-man gun like a GPMG I expect the downside to be that it's slow to deploy and raise to ironsights, but I want to lay down some serious lead with GPMGs; few games represent them as they should.
Hardly any games make the MGs as suppressive as they should be, most games you can just pop around the corner of your cover that is getting shot to fuck with an MG and kill the gunner and be on your way, which is dumb as shit.

The only game that I know that does any sort of remote suppression tactic's are Arma II. Even then at times the game is unrealistic at some points, I haven't played much into it though, so I can't base my opinion 100%.
LMG's in this game should be like the MG42/Browning in Red Orchestra. It would be really for the better.
With RO: Heroes of Stalingrad coming out.. sometime, I'll definitely have a blast experimenting with the mechanics in that game.

Yeah I'd like it so that if your cover/ground near you is getting absolutely hammered with MG fire, your screen would shake around a lot. It'd make everything a lot more authentic and give MGs a tactical use besides being "hur dur beeg machien gun shot lot boolet"

They seem to have difficulty portraying them as support weapons. In Battlefield they just feel like a rifle with a high cone of fire and high rate of fire.
They need to act as if they are heavy weapons. recoil/cof is not really an issue with lmgs and gpmgs since they are heavy enough that the weight of the weapon absorbs the brunt of the recoil, the biggest thing is reloading, carrying ammo, and setting up the weapon to a firing position; weather that is deploying it or firing it from the shoulder. I love the PKM in BF2, but I would have liked it more if there were less cof, and if it was just slower to use all around. gpmg weapons need to be the sort that are only really useful when you have squadmates around.. your squadmates should be quickest to the trigger with their assault rifles and carbines, but you should be the one who can lay down some serious lead once you get your gpmg set up.
lmgs should act more as the traditional "rifle with lots of ammo" sort of deal for people who don't have the patience for gpmgs, lots of ammo, an acceptable amount of CoF, and they should be quicker to the iron sights. And gpmgs should feel like heavy weaponry.
LMG's in this game should be like the MG42/Browning in Red Orchestra. It would be really for the better.
Just to clarify, an MG42 (or MG3), PKM, or M240 are not LMGs, they are GPMGs. LMGs are M249, RPK, RPD, etc; and there is a difference. gpmgs generally require a squad to operate; the squad is built around the gpmg, wheras lmgs are a single support weapon to support the rifle squad itself.
A GPMG *can* be a LMG in some sense, being that it's not a Heavy MG, but intermediate caliber lmgs tend to play the role of squad automatic weapons, whereas general purpose machine guns are more of a platoon support weapon.

Ooo, thanks for clearing that up for me :D
The reason game developers don't release mod tools to their games these days is because they are frustrated the hell out when their game's lifespawns are extended thousand fold and they can't leech money from it.

Edited my post a bit, you aren't really wrong in calling them an lmg, but from a tactical and strategical standpoint, they do not belong in the same classification as squad automatic MGs like M249/RPK. SAWs are operated by one person, and are used to support the individual squad or fireteam, GPMGs are operated by the squad, and used to support the platoon/section. gpmgs like the PKM generally have a loader and ammo carrier, but since that shit would be really dull in a battlefield game, it'd be best if gpmgs were operated by a single guy, but were just a lot slower to use. My gripe is that the PKM never really served a different role than the M249 or RPK in BF2.
In the best terms it would be: SAW - GPMG - HMG. Saw is M249, Gpmg is the PKM, and Hmg is the .50 browning/DShK

This is pretty much the main reason 99% of the time. Since you pay a one time fee for the game, a long lifespan is actually bad for the devs/publisher (unless they can keep making DLC that sells well).

Such a shame. It's a little bit selfish really.

The real reason is that a lot of devs that release mod tools also sell their engines which pretty much requires them to make the tools use able outside of their company. That also requires them to either buy separate licenses for technologies that weren't developed in house or make everything themselves.
In house engines often use a lot of 3rd party tech and when they aren't planning on selling the engine they would have to get separate licenses for the tech just so they can be used with the mod-tools. They also have to change the tools to actually work on one single computer.
So I was playing BF2 today and realized how much birds add to the combat. They make it that much harder to sneak through the grass. Birds in BF3, Yea or Nay?

I will open this thread tomorrow and find a couple hundred new posts. :argh:
Wish we knew when tomorrow/today the video will be released :frown:
Still excited nonetheless.
Pretty sure I saw a leaked fault line 2 video a couple weeks ago, hope it was something different though :/
Here it is:

That would be awesome if the video came out at midnight.

I think that's probably the last in the series and not number 2.

Most news sites and the Battlefield Blog had an article on the first one around 8-9am EST.
DICE has done so much shit talking lately. Battlefield 3 has to be near perfect since their claiming really high standards on their singleplayer campaign.

I really haven't seen DICE shit-talking. Are you just pulling this out your ass or have I missed out on some stuff?

eh they kinda have, with all the talk about "making the best BF game ever" and "focusing first on the PC" and all the "COD killer" talk
which is dumb, because COD and BF have nothing in common other than being FPS games and it needs to stay that way

They probably are making the 'best BF game ever'. And actually, they are focusing more on the PC side, you'd know that if you read the BF news daily.
But I don't think that BF3 will kill Call of Duty.

Every company says that for their newest release, of course they want to make it their best product. The second thing mentioned is good too, I mean, I recall half of the stuff said when BF3 was first announced was that it will be a game that is held back by the consoles.
Now I agree with you on the third one. It's annoying as hell to hear CoD comparisons with BF3 (with their common ground being they have guns and people die in both of them), especially comparisons that come from the Devs.
