I hope that one of the maps takes place in Chicago, but that's REALLY unlikely since there's already New York.
Not that many games take place in Chicago.
I don't see how anyone could think that a game having a singleplayer campaign is a bad thing.
Also I thought the console version would have 40 players instead of 24, shame but I'll deal with it.
DICE has the resources to focus on both a multiplayer experience and a single player experience without neglecting their work on the multipalyer. Just calm down.
Reinstalling BF2, can you just install patch 1.5 from Retail or do you have to install 1.41?
I was interested when I heard about Frostbite 2 using real-time radiosity. I thought it would be some cop-out, expensive to render feature. I was dead wrong, they are using this fairly new middle-ware from Geomarics called "Enlighten" which runs on the PC, 360, and PS3. It looks REALLY good.

That is a technical demonstration from GDC 10. They show how it can be useful for destructible, changing environments, and large streaming worlds. What's even more amazing is that the radiosity is being being sampled in ~5ms, which gives them ~25ms of headroom for better quality sampling.
I'm uploading another video about this, it's what DICE showed at SIGGRAPH. It's of Frostbite 2 using this stuff, on a much bigger scale too.

Remember watching that video a while ago, no idea they were using it, I am interested.

That's actually pretty interesting. So the lighting is dynamic and changing in real-time with no performance drop? Cool.
I might be reading too deep into it, but in BF3's case, would that make it possible to have maps with changing time of day? Or would that tech just be used for lighting changing when shone on intact buildings and damaged ones, and whatnot?
The latter seems like a bit of a waste, but the former seems too ambitious.

You need 1.41 installed first sadly.
Get Sandbox 1.0.1 while you're at it. Sandbox is one of the reasons I continued to play BF2 long after I would have otherwise stopped, and about a year ago the good side of the community started to pitter out. Eventually Elxx (basically Sandbox's Garry) handed full development over to Bullace, the leader of Sandbox Addicted (more or less the good side of Sandbox) and partly a dev of the more recent Sandboxes. Now all that's left is really just Bullace, Freeze (another long-time Sandboxer who plays a role in development now) me (the moderator of the Sandbox forums) and a shitload of players from the dumb side of the community, which unfortunately didn't die.
TL;DR, we'd appreciate more mature players back in the once-shining Sandbox mod community.
But enough about me, let's talk BF3.

benefits from preordering NOOOO
You post like we care what you do.

Will do.

There is a performance drop, like with everything else, but it's obviously not so bad because it's being used for BF3 on the consoles. Battlefield is also a game with huge streaming worlds, I think this Enlighten middle-ware is the real deal. Everything you mentioned is possible; change in time of day, destruction, moving light sources, and it's demonstrated in the video.
The first thing I'm going to do when I get this game is jump into a jet, fly as high as possible, nose diver towards an enemy building and jump out at the last second.

Now that would be cool. Joint Operations did that back in 2004, and shifting from day to night can provide new opportunities for players to conduct other forms of maneuver when everyone's visibility is reduced.

It's not that it's bad, it's more about it being an omen about what the game might be. The main BF games (1942, 2142, 2) Simply had bots. it was a Multiplayer game. Only the off shoots like bad company had SP campaigns. That might be why people are worried.

Here it is guys, a glimpse at Frostbite 2 and it's fucking awesome lighting. It also shows how the environments look without the radiosity. There is no sound.

I tried but my disks won't work. :frown:
[editline]5th February 2011[/editline]
Too bad they won't let us just attach our keys to the steam version...
Does that video have sound? or is it just me?
Edit: I meanted the one linked from GDC 2010, nvm.
What's radiosity?
What's radiosity?
Indirect light, light bouncing off a surface. Formerly, this has been nearly impossible to do in real-time. For example, shining a light on a green wall would usually give the surrounding environment a faint green tint from the light bouncing off the wall.
I especially like 3:20, where it switches from night to day instantly, and all the lighting changes with no delay. That would usually take a a long time to render.
Just started playing BF2, so many grenades :byodood:
What's radiosity?
it's what makes Mirror's Edge look fucking gorgeous.
I don't see how anyone could think that a game having a singleplayer campaign is a bad thing.
I think it's a bad thing.
But the campaign has COOP so I'm ok with it.
it's what makes Mirror's Edge look fucking gorgeous.
Yes, true, but the radiosity in Mirror's Edge was pre-calculated. What makes it remarkable this time is that it's in real-time, no matter how much you change the environment, the radiosity changes with it.

Yes, I know, but the concept of radiosity is what made ME beautiful.

Don't play the single player campaign.
Suddenly, in your game, it doesn't exist.
Even with the little amount of info we have on Battlefield 3, it has the potential to be the best multiplayer game of all time.
That settles it. I am going to upgrade my PC JUST for this game. :fappery:
Just imagine a nighttime map with humvee lights the only thing painting the almost pitch black streets aside from the moon with radiosity.
I want to see this game in action.
Can't wait to ram a plane into a building, that will look awesome.

I think it would be awesome if they allowed you to choose the time of day/night and weather, since it's now obviously possible.
