The most beautiful or good looking game you've played?
No.... You DO realize there's a large difference between CGI and 3D right? A single person could create all those scenes in myst where as it takes an entire team to fully realize a 3D interactive game world. If any of what was going on in Myst was actually hardware intensive, then a fucking DOS computer wouldn't be able to run it. It's an interactive slideshow... Deal with it.
It proved nothing more then how good they are at faking a 3D game. Are they pretty to look at? Sure, are they technological feats? No, GET OVER IT.
Once again:

Now shut up about it. Having prerendered CGI was the only way of having a 3D game in 1993.

Does that make it proper 3D? No.
Does that make it proper 3D? No.
And still, not what this thread is about.
Can we give it a rest already?
(Also, I dare you to go down in the Digital 3D Art thread and tell them it's not "proper 3D")

OK then.
Does it matter? They did a point and click different instead of being another monkey island. I also don't see the thread title saying anything about what you're arguing over. Games are beautiful for different reasons, Okami, Wind Waker and Metro 2033 are all great in their own way. Myst and others alike may be beautiful to others, just because you don't like how they created their game, it is rather unique though.
was typing before the give it a rest posts were posted :frog:
Myst & Sequels & Prequels (had one, if I remember correctly. God I need to replay them right now), Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid 4
No love for MGS2?
I was blown away when it first came out.

By what? It's nonsensical plot?
By what? It's nonsensical plot?
Cartwheeling through a tube as a naked ninja was pure genius. Shakespeare's entire works were put to shame by MGS2.

The visuals.
And as for the plot:

This makes a lot of sense if you've played it.
Even if you don't agree with that, you can't deny it had a clever post-modernism that games before it never had.

You continue to be very confused about the topic for this thread, why don't you just stop posting?
I've really been digging Just Cause 2's environments
The water's meh, everything else is fantastic
The sky, the shapes of the land, the jungles, I love it
Plus the explosions are gorgeous
Dwarf fortress...its photorealistic, no shaders can compete with my immagination.
The GoldSrc engine was the most beautiful and realistic engine during its time. To this day it is still beautiful in many aspects. Not realistic, but just visually appealing. I find that it was best looking engine for its time, and was one of those that, when combined with multiple games such as Half-Life, TFC, CS 1.6, has a very strong nostalgic feeling to it. No other game or engine has given me this. I have played many games before, even back to my early childhood, but this, it is more than just a simple engine. It started it all. Everything. Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Portal, TF2, L4D, and all the episodes. Where would steam be today without it? Would there have been events that would still have triggered the creation of steam?
There are still many times, even today, when I play some random custom map in CS 1.6, that seems to just immerse me in it; brings me back to those days, I feel like I am actually in the game itself. I don't know how to explain it. It's the feel of the engine, the utility, how clean and crystal clear everything is. There are so many mods for this engine it is uncountable. There are still single-player Half-Life mods that are being developed. Afraid of Monsters is one of them. When I played it, it freaked me out quite a bit, felt like I was in it. It's kind of like a movie, when you just walk out and it sticks inside your brain for a few hours, you get disconnected from reality.
It's kind of sad to see it slowly disappear, being saturated by all the new content that all started from this very engine itself. It feels like everyone has forgotten about it.
[sp]Better stop before this turns into an all out Bawww post[/sp]
left 4 dead 2 ... i dont know it just has this charm that makes me all warm inside
Don't know about goldsrc. I never liked the look of it even back when it was tope of the line, the Crysis of the day.
For me its AC2

Alot of that crap doesn't even make sense as it contradicts things which happened later in the games plot.
IT WAS MADE IN 1993! It was a HUGE leap in 3D graphics. Was it realtime? No. Was it the most impressive 3D for a long time which still looks good to this day? YES!
Name another game which still looks good 17 years later.
Riven came out in 1997, not 1993. Myst came out in 1993, and it looked like this
I was talking about Myst.
Oh, well I saw I bunch of screenshots from Riven. Also, I don't think Myst looks all too great today.
Half Life 2 still looks next gen by today's standards
