Why are killing floor passes such a big deal?

I know this is for gift passes but this seems like the best thread to ask. Does anyone have a spare Half Life 2 gift? I have it but my friend doesn't and he won't be able to buy it for sometime. I know that lots of people probably have them some left from the Orange Box and whatnot, so would anyone be kind enough to give one away in the spirit of the holiday season? The episodes would also be great but that's extra. Here's his email:
