Well let us hope.
also i gotta play the "bull shit until proven" card here. until he releases a video showing it, and provides instructions on how to do it, and then some other reputable tech sites (ie Engadget and Gizmodo) give it a whirl and confirm, it's impossible to know if it actually has been hacked.
I thought that as well. But then I also thought, why would he lie? It'll just make him look like a big douche.
But who the fuck is going to want to download 50GB torrents of games and then buy $90 Blu-Ray burner and the. $40 discs. This isn't gonna take PS3 piracy as far as people hope it will
Most of the non-exclusives don't even hit the 9gb mark. And if the PS3 is chipped, people could just pop in DVD-9s. Sadly, no system is free from ilicit modifications.
well, why would he say "hey guys i did something so totally incredible that people have been trying to do for 3 years now but i don't want to show you"
Probably because he doesn't want Sony to try to do something to fix it and it's so complex that only a minuscule percentile of people will actually be able to do with by themselves.
What would hacking the ps3 acomplish?
have you been under a fucking rock? hacking a ps3 from square one is a huge accomplishment to begin with [editline]10:15PM[/editline]
Probably because he doesn't want Sony to try to do something to fix it and it's so complex that only a minuscule percentile of people will actually be able to do with by themselves.
yeah you know because it's not like they could just release an update later on or anything like that
most of the non-exclusives don't even hit the 9gb mark because most of the non-exclusives are developed with the 360 in mind :downs:
Exactly.
I think sony should have just implemented homebrew anyway and bought the popular ones for a PSN release later.
I read he also got the motion engine (whatever it's called) to work so he could get PS2 on it. Hopefully if that is true. Sony will just hurry the fuck up and impliment it.
I really hope this happens.
You have to give Sony credit for having such a secure system though, over 3 years it took to hack the PS3.
Geohot is fucking awesome.
I don't understand where you are getting the "all ps3 games are 50-60gb" from. Just because they are inside a blue ray disk doesn't mean they use all the space in there.
Thing is, he probably isn't going to make an announcement again, since he hasn't really proved shit. Also, if you want your PS3 bricked, get its warranty invalidated or any of the likes, go ahead. I doubt it'll be any good in the long-run.
Dude, it's George Hotz. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Hotz

Still, pirated games don't work online, and will most likely brick your PS3. Game prices will soar even more. [editline]01:49PM[/editline] "You wouldn't steal a car"
That's nice to know. I was just going to get one - today.
No but i'd download one.
:saddowns:
Loving all the haters of Usenet here, you have fun with your 300kb/s downloads, I'll be enjoying over 50mb/s 50mb/s of Linux distro's.
Most of the PS3 games fill an entire Blu-ray by having data on there multiple times in order to reduce seek times.
Hm ok, I was thinking of multi platform games such as Call of Duty 4. There was a supposedly playable version of it for download with a size of 5-6 gigabytes.
You have to give Sony credit for having such a secure system though, over 3 years it took to hack the PS3.
No one really bothered to hack it because most hardware hackers only care about running Linux on their favourite system and most pirates don't have the knowledge.
Oh my fucking god YES. YES. YES! I've wanted this since I got mine. It would be funny if they made a Playing Game Spoofer for the PS3, IE it could say you were playing Modern Warfare 3. I'll wait a bit to see what happens though. Actually, that would not be funny. It would be bad, everyone would be playing games that don't exist. But I bet people are going to mod the DLC content for Fallout 3 and get PC mods for the PS3.
Modding a console doesn't let you mod the games
No one really bothered to hack it
Are you kidding?
Modding a console doesn't let you mod the games
Technically you can, but it would be a retarded and indirect path as he only had memory access. Unless the game disc can be edited to add the mod files. All the dlc is is a bethseba mod container, or whatever they call it, that is just ran after the games main package when loading. Hopefully if he has memory read and write a proof of concept should be out soon in tandem with the ability for homebrew soon.
I read he also got the motion engine (whatever it's called) to work so he could get PS2 on it. Hopefully if that is true. Sony will just hurry the fuck up and impliment it.
Dumbass, The emotion engine was in the original ps3's. It was a chip. They didn't put it in later ps3s.
Finally.
I don't understand where you are getting the "all ps3 games are 50-60gb" from. Just because they are inside a blue ray disk doesn't mean they use all the space in there.
well a handful of exclusives do use at least 12GB [editline]09:13AM[/editline]
Dumbass, The emotion engine was in the original ps3's. It was a chip. They didn't put it in later ps3s.
yes, and it's also emulated on later PS3 SKUs :downs:
I like how take opal got banned for commenting on the guy above him's post when it should've been the other way around
