Oh god I remember playing the freeware demo of the first game. Got my ass kicked every time. Oh, the memories of ancient download sites like Happy Puppy and all that.
Then there was the PSOne Army Men game, which was mostly an action game. In the split-screen multiplayer, though, both players could strategically place various units down to try to overpower and outnumber the opposing player.
If anything, good ol' Sarge's Heroes expanded on the action gameplay from that game, which came to be the most recognized part of the series.

I still have both the Battletanx games :D
And yes it does work. You can use gamespy or gameranger to play online, or just ip/tcp on the game. If anyone wants to play, I'll set up a server at 5:oo PM CST time, the server's name will be: Real Combat,Plastic Men. It will be for Army Men II. Contact me on Steam if you want one of the other games or for a different time.
