• Friendly Faceoff: Dead Space vs. Penumbra, which is scarier

A big difference is that in Penumbra, you're rather unarmed against the odds you face. In Dead Space you get some nifty guns to shred the mutants apart.
I love Dead Space, but even just the demo of Penumbra brings more fear to me than the entirety of Dead Space.
I love Dead Space in its environment but I'm a pussy for horror games and I played it fine. It was fun and I had a few jumps but nothing to get my pulse racing.
Dead Space gave you the ability to rip apart whatever was scaring you, making it less scary. Penumbra gave you a Pick Axe and wished you good luck. Penumbra wins.
Never actually played Penumbra, but from what I've seen... Fuck man. Voted Penumbra.
Dead Space gave you the ability to rip apart whatever was scaring you, making it less scary. Penumbra gave you a Pick Axe and wished you good luck. Penumbra wins.
In black plague you had no weapons.
So, I think Penumbra is the clear winner. But what about between Penumbra and Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem if you're playing full - insanity.
I still say Penumbra.
Dead Space is pretty easy to get through. When walking down hallways you get the creeps because these monsters pop out everywhere (ceiling, floor, behind you, walls, etc.). Brutes were scary at the first encounter but are actually easy to kill. Penumbra is extremely scary in my opinion. The atmosphere makes the game a lot harder to get through and the fact that the game is pretty much a puzzle to get through levels you need to search everywhere and a lot of scary shit happens while doing that. Penumbra is scarier than Dead Space in my opinion. Dead Space had good moments of surprising and other things, but Penumbra is just so damn hard to play without shitting your pants. The only weapons being a Pick Axe or a Hammer makes playing a whole lot harder.
Never played Penumbra to the end. That's how scared I was.
It depends on which Penumbra you're talking about. The first isn't that scary but I hear Black Plague is a lot scarier, especially since you can't fight.
I've played both. People need to learn the difference between a scare and horror. Imagine you're concentrated doing something and suddenly a friend comes by and says hi, you jump, it's your Fight or Flight response to the stimuli, but you are not terrified "oh god i'm so scared ohfuckohfuckohfuck", you just jumped, "shit man you scared the shit out of me!". Now horror, in Penumbra you almost can't see shit, you got a flashlight that consumes as much power as a metropolis and you got a glowstick, you also got a hammer and pickaxe to fight, if you look at an enemy directly you will panic and the character will start to breathe heavily, the enemy will then be able to know where you are and will go to investigate the noise. You are completely fucked if he sees you because fighting isn't that easy in Penumbra, the controls are made for environment interaction, not combat, you will know what I'm talking about if you have played the game and been in combat. The game constantly puts you into an atmosphere where you are trapped, underground and everyone is dead. You see blood trails, weird messages, and all kinds of weird carvings and noises. In short, Penumbra gives you the horror feel, makes you feel like you are fucked and it will make your body release adrenaline. Dead Space on the other hand: You're walking around with high-tech weaponry, a goddamn alien appears in front of you out of nowhere, you let out a scream and get scared for a second, then you proceed to kill the alien by dismembering it completely and stepping on it. Then the cycle starts over.
You are completely fucked if he sees you because fighting isn't that easy in Penumbra
Yes it is. If you hit the enemy once you're pretty much guaranteed a win because they get knocked down and you can keep hitting them.
Did you forget to turn your lights off? Were you wearing your headphones. I presume you were playing at midnight with surround sound on a 42" TV?
I was playing at approx. 10 PM with my Steelseries Siberia headphones thank you.
Penumbra by far. Dead Space scares are just jump scares they stop being scary after the first time.
Penumbra is only scary because the controls are so shit you constantly know you're fucked if an enemy finds you.
Penumbra by far. Dead Space isn't even scary.
It's hard to say. Penumbra has this really scary atmosphere that makes you too afraid to open a door. The story wasn't really scary, but still good. Dead Space has pretty much jumpers that scare you for a second, but it's the story that really got me. Everything is so fucked up it boggled my mind. I really don't know which one i should vote for.
Penumbra takes it in for me, it gave you more of a isolated atmosphere, seeing as you're the only human except for Red (Talking 'bout the first game here) [sp]who isn't even much of a human anymore.[/sp] Where as in Dead Space you are contacted alot by whoever and given instructions, but it has an incredibly creepy atmosphere. :ohdear:
FUCK penumbra
Wow, man, you just completely missed the point of the entire fucking thread, a point that was explained in the goddamn thread title.
Friendly Faceoff
Nice one.
Penumbra hands down.
Dead Space for me was a fun space action game with exploding limbs, it was never very scary. Penumbra was fucking scary, goddamn I didn't even want to finish the game.
Neither are scary at all.
I heard Penumbra was really scary, so I voted for Penumbra. I don't like scary games, anyways.
You guys think Penumbra was scary. Wait for Amnesia.
Penumbra was scarier, But Dead Space had an awesome atmosphere.
Yes it is. If you hit the enemy once you're pretty much guaranteed a win because they get knocked down and you can keep hitting them.
At least for me it isn't, the whole pulling back with the mouse is confusing because it freezes the POV while doing it.

Penumbra. Dead Space was cool and all, but it's hard to find fear in a game where you're given an arsenal to take out anything that threatens you. Penumbra has you running and hiding from your opponents. I'm really looking forward to their next game.
Neither.
Penumbra definitely. In Dead Space you're armed to the teeth with weapons and armor. In Penumbra Overture, you only have weapons like hammers and pickaxes to save you. In the other Penumbra games you can't even fight.
