Friendly Faceoff: Dead Space vs. Penumbra, which is scarier

Dead Space, but only because the combat focus causes immediate fear rather than Penumbra's hiding focus causing lasting fear.

Penumbra. all the way.
Again, not defending Dead Space. But I doubt %50 of the people who voted for Penumbra have played it.
I remember in black plague when i first saw that fucking monster person i got up from behind the desk and threw everything in the room at it till it clubbed me to death. I was screaming "OH FUCK OH FUCK OH FUCK" the whole time.
Dead Space isn't that scary. At first it is but it's the same as most horror games: It's nothing new.
You know when something happens. There's very very few occasions where it's actually scary

20 minutes of penumbra, couldn't stand more. Most of the time was really slow crawling around
Penumbra was indeed scary, but it all got old after a while. In Overture, once I figured out you could kill the dogs by throwing things at them, they no longer presented a threat. And for the other monsters, you just need to run away from them. No big deal. In Black Plague, same thing - all you need to do is run away. There's no real fear because you know that you're going to survive if you just run to the next area.
In Dead Space, since there were more than two or three types of enemies, there were constant dangers being presented as the game progressed. Since they'd often come from vents, there was always the constant fear that something would come from nowhere and pounce on you.
So, for those reasons, Dead Space was scarier in my opinion.
Completely different types of scary
Penumbra by far. In Black Plague, that first enemy... :gonk:
Neither are horror games, they might shock you a bit but scary? Lolno. Seems like the only people that can do horror right nowadays are the japanese.

You've never played Penumbra.
Dead Space is more of an action thriller than a survival horror Game,
This being said, Penumbra is a metric FUCK TON scarier.
I've played both. People need to learn the difference between a scare and horror.
Imagine you're concentrated doing something and suddenly a friend comes by and says hi, you jump, it's your Fight or Flight response to the stimuli, but you are not terrified "oh god i'm so scared ohfuckohfuckohfuck", you just jumped, "shit man you scared the shit out of me!".
Now horror, in Penumbra you almost can't see shit, you got a flashlight that consumes as much power as a metropolis and you got a glowstick, you also got a hammer and pickaxe to fight, if you look at an enemy directly you will panic and the character will start to breathe heavily, the enemy will then be able to know where you are and will go to investigate the noise.
You are completely fucked if he sees you because fighting isn't that easy in Penumbra, the controls are made for environment interaction, not combat, you will know what I'm talking about if you have played the game and been in combat. The game constantly puts you into an atmosphere where you are trapped, underground and everyone is dead. You see blood trails, weird messages, and all kinds of weird carvings and noises.
In short, Penumbra gives you the horror feel, makes you feel like you are fucked and it will make your body release adrenaline.
Dead Space on the other hand: You're walking around with high-tech weaponry, a goddamn alien appears in front of you out of nowhere, you let out a scream and get scared for a second, then you proceed to kill the alien by dismembering it completely and stepping on it. Then the cycle starts over.
That. Give this man many agrees.
Penumbra. Isn't that scary to me anymore because I've played through it a few times, but I remember really needing to gather some balls for the first play through of it. Can't wait for Amnesia.
I can't understand how people find Dead Space scary. The music practically announces the presence of necromorphs, who flail their arms everywhere like attention seeking whores until you know where they are, and giving you ample time to blast the fuck out of them with your handheld hadron collider 3000. The only scary bit for me was the ending, but hell, one could argue the map 'Nightmare House' (or whatever it's called) was scary for the same reason, and loses its effect after one or two times.
Dead Space is as scary as Resident Evil 5. A bloody great action game, but not even remotely scary because when a man (or woman) is given the power to smite all foes into oblivion, he no longer fears that foe. In the case of RE5, you weren't given mega laser cannons, but the muscles on Chris' arms (which made him look like he had legs for arms), and dat ass on Sheva, the zombies (infected?) had nothing on you.
Sure, one could argue that Penumbra and Black Plague are not scary the moment you realise you can outrun any opponent and even kill them easily (with a bit of practice) in the first, but admit it, the first encounter with a dog in that dark cave really got you on your toes, and the first time you saw that semi-erect mutant zombie penis on the Black Plague enemies made you shit your pants.
Penumbra is the only game I have ever played to TRULY scare me. Every other game just had shit pop out and startle.
Only a few games ever really scared me so much that I refused to keep playing.
Resident evil 1 Remake
The Path
Penumbra: Black Plague
And I persevered through Black Plague, mainly by having a friend play it with me.
Voted Penumbra mainly because I couldnt play penumbra for 2 minutes without getting scared.
Dead pace was a fun game, hardly scary
The first Penumbra was really scary at first but it toned down once you figure out [sp]all the enemies are dogs and spiders[/sp] and that you can kill them all easily but just picking up random shit like rocks and thowing it at them.
Black Plague, on the other hand, had creepy as fuck monsters and to my knowledge you couldn't kill them, so you're constantly running and hiding if you get caught. That's what makes it truly scary.
I voted Penumbra.
You can't just gun anything down, especially not in Black Plague. Penumbra also got a perfect atmosphere, and while Dead Space got a good one too, it's not real horror, not for me at least.
In Dead Space it's either kill or die.
In Penumbra it's either run or die.
I played Dead Space once at my friends house. Got scared only once because I saw one of them creepers run past the corridor and my friends mouse didn't register the movement.
Penumbra, I haven't played it. But in our local game-mag they recommanded to have a bottle of nitro next to you when playing it.
