I found your problem.
You have Vista.
I had a problem with it aswell.
It wouldn't install ANY updates and when I played wow it would mess up and I got some blue screen and I had to restart.
And it took about 5 minutes to log out my user or change user.
Just send your computer in for a repair, would be my advice.

i have had vista since launch and have had no issues whatsoever, and most on facepunch have had almost no issues with vista

My disk defrag has been running since yesterday... It's still going.
Also I've never had any problems with vista till now(Which I don't even know if it's a vista problem), and even then I'm upgrading to Windows 7.

Depends on how often you install / uninstall stuff.
I found some other defrag programs to be much better than the Windows default one.
I found that copying a file and then deleting the old one basically does the same thing as defragmenting.
Useful for defragging lone large files that you use a lot :D
