I have something extreme to propose to you guys.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. recently has become quite boring for me, and I was wondering 'why'. The game bases it's entertainment value on survival aspects, apprehension/fear, building your character, and atmosphere correct? Well there is a big wrench in that theory for me.
That wrench is quicksaves. The ability to save anywhere, anytime, and suffer no losses other then a minor inconvenience from death. Death is not something to be afraid of in S.T.A.L.K.E.R., because death carries no penalty, and thusly, all of the threats that lie in the zone seem all too unthreatening.
So here's what I pose to you. Create numerous named autosaves during key points, like completing quests and such, tying autosaves to sleeping, but only in safe zones that would otherwise be safe from Blowouts, and removing quicksaves completely, as well as manual saves.
Who would be in favor of this idea? Is it worth pursuing?
Make two versions, one with that and the other without. I would love to play STALKER without quicksaves, only saves during the times and areas you mentioned.
Holden, have you played SMOD: Tactical? That is probably one of my favorite games. Here's why; the satisfaction of the kill. Games become much more satisfying if each kill is more satisfying. Now to me it made it more satisfying because the guns felt like had power, yet they were still realistic, but the main part that made each kill satisfying for me was the blood. I had my gore set to max, so with every enemy killed, the last show will spurt out a stream of blood as the corpse fell to the ground. I think if you can make each kill more satisfying on an individual basis while keeping it realistic like SMOD: Tactical did, it would be a lot more fun.
It's a valid way of playing, I think. I don't think anyone should go to any modding lengths to carry it out, it is more of a matter of discipline... I think I'll try it out soon because you're right: I'm too much of a kamikaze fighter to really "care" about these things. I'm just wary of bullshit moments, like when a squad of soldiers spawn in your face.
You're using the word fun very liberally. Having tension/apprehension/challenge and fear in a post apocalyptic survival horror shooter is my idea of fun. Rather then treating it like a mindless sandbox game where you see if you can kill that bloodsucker with a knife.
[editline]07:25PM[/editline]
It can be optional, and I'm already balancing the game in a way that will be less suited towards random deaths.
You really think "tension, apprension, challenge and fear" aren't part of the game I play (that you play) because of quicksaving? Seriously? This isn't about changing how much tension there is, it's about how much frustration it's going to cause the player. If I lose an hour of progress because I get shot in the head in a moment of distraction, I'm not going to shrug and go "well that's life in the zone," I'm going to fucking ragequit (and I know I'm not alone on that). Now, imagine if I fucking crash. If the only answer to "well what about the game being unpredictable" is "well I'll make it less unpredictable," I think you're the one making the game less tense, not me.
Would it still autosave on transitions from areas?
Regardless, I'm all for it, as an option.

I think it's a good idea, especially creating saves after the player character goes to sleep. As long as you don't implement the sleeping bag, of course. It'd add to the atmosphere, and for people who want a realisti/k/ and terrifying game, it'd be exactly what they were looking for.
However, since some people will want something easier, I'd release this as an add-on.
God damn. Apparently "Average Weather" in LURK is one day of sun out of the week and the rest it's shitty, rainy and miserable and I can't take it.
So now I have to download the entire mod pack all over again just to change it so that it's almost always sunny.
[editline]10:46PM[/editline]
And on a unrelated note how many people play without cross hars and NPC identification?

Clearly you've never been to Eastern Europe. That's how the weather usually is here.

I think it's a bad and good idea, and I already know many others are going to be against it. Bad because if I wanted to replay X18 over again I would have to make a new game or walk all the way down the Dark Valley to do X18 over again instead of just loading an old save of mine. I think it's a bad idea also because what if right when an Autosave happens, you get killed a few seconds after and cannot prevent yourself from getting killed?. Will Autosaves overwrite each other?
I think It's a good Idea because it will stop me from always having the urge to quicksave ( I have the tendency to hit it once every 5-10 seconds ).
I think it needs to be optional if you implement this, as many people will get extremely frustrated without their quicksave.

I'm also afraid of the Zone and the thunder storms don't help. It gets annoying hiding in a building, sleeping for 48 hours and waiting for it to stop fucking raining so I can leave. In addition, it appears that nights in the Ukraine are 3 to 4 days long.
For some reasons SoC doesn't give me the problems CS did

CS = Bad optimization
SoC = Okay optimization
Someone told me I sucked at stalker and to play at hell difficulty with knife and leather jacket only
So I started a game on hell difficulty and my game crashed, and when i tried again it crashed. Eventually I work it out and I recorded part 1 of my series. It is currently uploading and it involves me dying about 10 times at the car park. Will post it when it uploads
[editline]10:12PM[/editline]
I did get some pretty nice kills though
There was one when I leaped a good meter or so and facestabbed a bandit
Err, I need a little help with Stalker Complete. I'm trying to get freeplay to unlock, and I'm currently at the end of the game, I need to know which ending to take in order to get freeplay.

Probably the destroy the C-Consciousness ending, aka "Good" ending.

That's a bug related to sleeping. Just quicksave+quickload and the weather/time of day will fix itself.
Why is it that when companies release a sequel every year, a la Activision, they get criticized, but when GSC does it, nobody complains?
Is it because each title adds so much more new content compared to the marginal updates in long running franchises like Madden or Guitar Hero?
What do you guys think?

GSC doesn't charge $60 for an over-hyped sequel.

then i have to run back through pripyat which as you can see is still full of enemies and then I have to probably run all the way back to the bar just to buy health

Find the trader in Pripyat and buy supplies from him.
His trader was killed by snorks!

I made my own inventory UI files if anyone wants to see them. They are made for 16:9 as I tested it on 1920x1080
