I loved both, but I didn't like the redesigns for the characters in the second game. Jennifer looked too ugly (Mercs 1 Jen looked better IMO), Mattias tried too hard to look like Technoviking, and Chris... well, I never played as him in either game, really...
Still, I loved both games. After beating the second game I went and did a Cheat playthrough because it's ever so fun to cause limitless wanton destruction, like Mercs 1's New Game Plus.
I loved the second one.
Honestly I think Just Cause 2 is pretty similar, I love both, if you love Mercenaries 2, check out Just Cause 2.
Haven't played the first Mercenaries, but whatever. :v:

Anyone who hasn't played the first one is really missing out. Just don't play the Xbox version on a 360, because the 360's backwards compatibility for it is FUCKED and it'll cause the game to freeze a LOT and chances are you'll lose a lot of gametime whenever it does.
I loved playing Mercs 1 on the PS2. :unsmith:
Playing the demo, getting the helicopter from the base, going to the town, dropping the winch on them and spinning them around. Then a couple years later I got the full game, so many hours in it.
Second one is good too. Not as good as the first, but at least you can swim.
i just couldn't get into mercenaries 2
i like to pretend that just cause was what mercs 2 was suppose to be in my eyes
I think most people here are just hopping into a bandwagon and hating on Mercs 2 for no reason
:colbert:
The first one was infinitely better than the second. Such a letdown.

JC2 sucked.
I remember renting the first game and thinking this is 'ok' and then renting the second one and thinking 'holy shit this sucks'.
Don't see why people are calling Mercs 2 terrible I found it really fun.
Only played the first one on PS2.
Epic shit everywhere.
There are two kinds of people.
People that played the first one.
People that played the second one.
You just don't understand the hate for the second one, until you play the first one.
The second one was only enjoyable because of the bugs.
Once i tried landing a helicopter on a boat, and the boat started spinning really quickly, then threw me across the map.
Instead of killing me, It made me invincible, but with my screen tinted red. :v:

And then there was this car.

It unlocked when i got 23 packages, some of which were the same package picked up twice, even though it was supposed to take 100.
Also pistols would always use the rifle animations for me.

I'm buying it.
Right now.

Bought.
Too easy.
Who's next?
/duke
but seriously. Way too easy.
[editline]27th March 2011[/editline]
Also wasn't there a game with malaria that was the exact same thing but less silly?

Far Cry 2 was nothing like Mercs at all. In fact, I'd say that even Mercs 2 was better than FC2.

I've played the first, and the second. I loved the first, but the second has a bad rep. It deserves its bad rep, but its not THAT bad, its bad, but its still fun. the gunplay is fun and all, and it was terribly unfinished, but its still fun to just use a trainer, and fuck shit up, theres not many games that have the destruction factor mercs2 does.
Love the first one. I've spent a ridiculous amount of time doing crazy stuff in that game, or just obliterating things with airstrikes.
The sequel? Not so much. A lot of bugs, none of the cheats that made the first game infinitely funner (even though they did later add them in a patch). They also drastically changed the mood of the game. First one was more serious while the second one was like an over-the-top action movie. Probably intentional, but all the same.
And worst of all, the voice-acting of the faction troops. I did not like being stuck in vehicles with frat boys and surfer dudes. But besides all that, fun game.
I was thinking about reinstalling the sequel, just because the bugs made it so unintentionally funny, but then I found White Gold: War in Paradise. :v:
I played the living hell out of the first game. Probably beat it about 5 or 6 times on my Xbox because I found it so entertaining. Mattias is still the best character.
I bought the 2nd hoping it was good somehow. Boy was I wrong. I really didn't like aspect of having both the petroleum and money to worry about when using airstrikes and bringing in vehicles (correct me if I'm wrong about the vehicles). It always felt like to me that I spent more time trying to find oil to use for the airstrikes rather than using those airstrikes. The only thing I found to be a good addition was the ability to swim. That was something the 1st game needed desperately!

Throw fuel tanks at passing bombers.
Air strikes, yay air strikes.
Then you most likely would not understand.
So, its kind of, a good game, but in comparison to the first one its a let down?
I understand that. Good thing I didn't play the first one then, because I'm having fun with the second part.

Or now that you love the second, you can go play the first and be fucking amazed?
The first game just had more atmosphere than the sequel. It was gloomy with all the fog (probably put there due to draw distance limitations TBH) and there was some mystery of what you were going to find over the next hilltop with the collectibles that were actually funny.
I don't know what got lost in translation but the second game just didnt have that same epic feeling. And the deck of 52 is way better than the lists you get in the second game that lack any backstory.

The fact that LucasArts wasn't involved in Mercs 2 and EA got involved instead may have had something to do with Mercs 2's lowered quality.

EA ordered them to re-do the game when they bought pandemic and IMO that was the killer. Initially it looked fucking amazing and retained a lot of the feel you had in the first game.
The second one on PS2 was horrible. I don't know why I spent so much time on it.
Co-op on Mercs 2 was extremely fun for me, especially with the cheat codes and all. I still hop on it with a friend every once in a while to have fun, and that's all games are about, having fun.
