Mercs 1 is, and has always been my favorite game of all time. The gameplay, the atmosphere, everything about it was absolutely amazing. And while I liked Mercs 2, it just didn't feel like the same game, and could have been so much better.
One thing I realized recently, was that I thought Just Cause 2 was impressive for having over 50 missions. I figured that it was okay that some of the missions were significantly lamer than others because of just how many there were. But then I realized that in Mercs, every mission that you played gave you a hit about one of the Deck of 52. That means that there were 52 missions in Mercs 1, which is way more than I thought, and each one held up really well on their own.
That made me even more annoyed at JC2 for having so many lame missions.
Mercs 1 really needs to be remade with today's tech. That would be incredible.

Actually, there were more than 52 missions. In every "suite", there would always be two missions (usually face card missions) that didn't yield another number card. So in reality there were about 60 missions.

But those ones are for the face cards.
The 52 includes faces and aces.

I got stuck in Mercenaries 2 because I had to defend a church or something, and I died.
It respawned me on the other side of the map when I tried to replay it, but the church was already under attack, so it would be destroyed before you could get to it.
Apparently lots of people couldn't finish another mission because you were supposed to pick someone up from a rooftop, and they would walk off the building and kill themselves.

huh, I guess I had a brain fart.
I played the first and second one. I don't think the sequel was all that terrible, just not all that awesome. :(
I still had plenty of fun with it, though.
What i want: Mercs 1 EXACTLY as it is, but with multiplayer options. I dont care if the graphics stay the same, i don't care about changing the gameplay. The game was amazing, and multiplayer would have made that one of the best games of the generation to me. I STILL have my xbox copy.
If the sequel had been given another year or two in development, it could have been amazing.
As it stands, Just Cause 2 is probably the best successor to the original. When I first played it, my first thought was "This is Mercs 2 done right". And it is. A good chunk of the missions are pretty lame, but it does the chaotic and explosive feel right. It also has a working grappling hook!

Changing gameplay would change the game. :downs:
Mercs 2 could have been better if the storyline was longer. Also I hated how the guns would just spray wildly when you crouched. The first one on the other hand, I played that so much.
Did anyon ever figure out how to use the anti-material rifle in the first game? Like, I could never figure out its purpose

Mainly for the shitty jeeps etc. I think you could snipe pilots from any angle with it too so you weren't struggling to hit them from the window.

I hate it i cant go online with 2. Seems like fun to dick around online.
Despite all the bugs and repetitiveness of it, Mercs 2 was somehow really really fun.
[editline]29th March 2011[/editline]
They could have done much better though.
I played the first one so damn much, then when I beat the campaign for about the 3rd time I started using cheats and that was even more fun. Mercs 2 isn't as good as the first but it's still a pretty fun game in my opinion, especially being able to play online. I think I need to play through the first one again, I miss it now. The cars were so fucking awesome, I didn't care about which one I drove.
Or now that you love the second, you can go play the first and be fucking amazed?
Yeah but its only on PS2 and Xbox isn't it?
I'm having the PS3 slim, so PS2 games are off for me.

I think it was just EA shutting their servers.
Greedy bastards, doing this because they want more people playing their newer games.
I used to play the second one online with a couple of people. The best thing about the game were the costumes. One of them was a hitler uniform with the haircut and everything.

They should at least up the draw distance if they remake it.
EA ordered them to re-do the game when they bought pandemic and IMO that was the killer. Initially it looked fucking amazing and retained a lot of the feel you had in the first game.
They also took out the dynamic fire, which was the best part.
Ground breaking, general purpose fire technology lets you set fire to buildings, vehicles and people. Shoot holes in the sides of fuel trucks, watch the oil spill under the feet of unsuspecting enemies and light it on fire with a match!
Then they forgot the game was called World in Flames and left all that out.

Mercs 2 would've been in a way until it got redone.
Nuklar boonkar boosta on the ghost paeg
I always liked using that or the MOAB on the Oil headquarters. Then watch it sprout up the next day.

I remember reading once that the player was to acquire a pet boar at one point that could gore enemies. That would have been badass.
ive only managed to join one online game (ps3)
to bad there was no real communications between us so i left
it was basically like destroy all humans 2 co-op
also saboteur... underrated? yes by alot
If Mercs 3/Mercs Inc even has a singleplayer, I will be satisfied.
That is, if it is anywhere close to Mercs 1.
God, that game entertained me for years. You guys may not appreciate it, but that was my only game on the PS2. I counted a total of 15 times I completed it, I cannot express my love for this game. I assume part of the reason I loved it so much was because I played it with my brother while he was still with me.
Mattias Nilson had the greatest quotes in both games.
"What the Hell is babysitting?"
"LET THE VIKING WIN!!!"
"I like Colonel Peng. Even the stick up his butt has a stick up it's butt."

Saboteur is a great game but it has a bunch of flaws due to rushing and such.
The game is good its just that it had a ton of bugs
oh man
mercs 1 + PS2 gameshark = best game on the ps2
Mercs 1 was such a good game, I don't think there was a single thing I disliked about it.
The sequel was... Yuck. Awful voice acting, annoying missions, and just general unplayabilty. Don't get me wrong, it had it's moments, it still pisses me off though.

I'd love to see a Saboteur sequel. Axis-occupied Yugoslavia or a fictional Central European country under occupation by the Soviets in the 1950s would be nice settings.
I really hated the "badass mercenary" mood that Mercs 2 was pushing. Mercs 1's semi-serious Korean conflict was pretty awesome and it's a shame to see it abandoned for good.
