of course DOOM is gonna feel like the most amazing game of all time because in our youth that was it (i'm a bit older than most of you but i still feel the same way)
you guys should just get used to the fact that you aren't gonna like games that much anymore, i've already accepted that
I grew up on Tomba, Crash, and Spyro games on the PS1 since I got into gaming late and I can still play and enjoy the fuck out of those games
It isn't hard to see that gameplay is taking a backseat to technical prowess and as much as I love nifty graphics, games suck more than they used to because of it
i still boot up doom on my iphone
best reason to have an iphone

Well I guess there has to be one
also final fantasy
I'm sure this has been said millions of times in this thread, but an ideal game for me would be:
1: A great amount of areas you can explore, lots of side rooms/outside areas that even if they aren't necessary, help immerse you in the game world.
2: CHEATS. Where did they go? I remember I had some of the most fun moments in gaming just fucking with the GTA San Andreas cheats, such as flying cars, pedestrian riot mode, everyone has weapons, spawning tanks and just messing shit up.
3: Easter eggs. Another thing that GTA: SA was good for, there were easter eggs spread out literally all over the landscape. Personally, I love when a developer spends extra time and puts a little something extra in the game for players to find (kind of like the scarab gun in Halo 2, great fun).
4: More/better quality multiplayer maps. I don't want to be paying $20 for maps that should be on the disc already (I'm looking at you CoD...).
5: Puzzles and things that require innovative thinking, more than one or 2 approaches to a situation.
6: A long campaign that keeps you focused and wanting more, with multiplayer being great, but just as an extra.
These days I only buy games if they stand up well on the single player portion. My friend always lectures me about how "Multiplayer is the important part" but I tend to get shit bored of multiplayer as it seems all people play it for is to brag about a K/D ratio or some other 'achievement' showing how good they are at a game.
I fear that I am starting to get a bit too old for games, 10 years ago all I did was school-friends-video games and more and more often I "can't be bothered" to play games and end up watching TV or mindlessly browsing the internet...

I would just resume it and say "Be creative and don't just copy the game that sold billions for the pre-teen age group"
also final fantasy
Died for me after IV
cod sold the most to the age group of 21-35 which is also the average group of gamers
this pre-teen thing is just a repackaging of the old as fuck "14 year old" insult

I wonder where the adults are then...
because the first thing you see when you enter a match or related forum are kids who don't know how to spell the name of the game. Or the adults are moronic enough to be confused like that... oh well.
Wow you must be really bad at San Andreas. I remember beating it in less than a day.
I started playing Grand Theft Auto III when i was 8 years old, and i couldn't get past Bomb da Base, act 2. Fucking 8-ball would always die, and I decided to simply jerk around in the city instead of doing the missions. Maybe once a month though, I would try bomb da base again and end up failing in frustration and not playing until the next month.
Well, I got past that mission when I was 14, 6 years later, followed by the rest of GTA 3. So you could basically say GTA 3 had a 7 year campaign.

That's the first thing you see with any competitive multiplayer video game.
People will always find something different to shit on, something different to jizz themselves over.

Not really. Some people enjoy things because it happened in their childhood, and remembering it makes them remember everything else.
Then, there are people who honestly enjoyed the world that existed as a childhood, not because it reminds them of anything, but because they honestly think it is better. Which is not nostalgia.
I like valve's way of handeling Cutscenes, and that is. Not having them.
Simply have characters talking, and you can still look and move around. Really makes you feel more into the game and not like you're just watching a series of small movies.
Most fps games don't really need cutscenes. Cutscenes can be good in FPS games, but only if they're stylish/creative (XIII). Third person games however (Mass Effect, MGS) do need them.
It depends on how cutscenes are used. If they rip you out of the action and pull you away from controlling your character, bad cutscene. If it's used as some kind of interlude, good cutscene.

Is that 1993 level taken from a certain game? It looks rather fun.
Is that 1993 level taken from a certain game? It looks rather fun.
It's from Doom 1 or 2
Also Metal gear solid level design was pretty kickin rad
Oh the days of metal gear solid, metroid (fusion, prime, etc), resident evil and like. Where have you gone?

E1M6 - Central processing from Doom.

I still don't get it.
"I'M BIG GENERIC TOUGH US SOLDIER MAN...hey mommy can you open this door for me?"
Also trailers that aren't clearly labelled as 'gameplay' trailers for most modern shooters should be taken with a grain of sand.

Other character's facial hair give them magical plot advancing powers.
I'm serious:
Price.
Reznov.
Whoever is with you in homefront.
When you pay for a big budget 'AAA' title you are paying for a babysitter.
Completely unstimulating babysitting,, like that one old woman who always volunteered to be your babysitter but always kept sleeping before you.
I'm sure it's been said a few times now, but the one thing I would really like to see more in games is coop. Either online or LAN.
I absolutely love coop. I mean, imagine games like STALKER, FallOut3, or Oblivion having coop. That would be so awesome. I mean obviously the games would have to be rebuilt a bit to make the coop not seem like a shitty tack-on, but it's still pretty easy to imagine plopping through the Marshes of STALKER with your buddy, and realizing too late you've stumbled into a Bloodsucker nest, and you need to blast your way through to get out.
I remember playing Quake 2 Coop. The campaign was only designed for singleplayer, but it's still incredibly fun to play with 2-player coop. That game was the shit! :buddy:
I'd really enjoy a game where door opening was tasked to the one closest to the door, regardless if it's an NPC or the player.
