Half-Life 2 Deathmatch is pretty good for a cheap/free game.
Bulletstorm and AS:B lasted me about 5-6 hours. It's terrible the money they expect these days. Started to move onto RPG they last long but traveling is very boring.
DA:O and DA2 are both very fun RPGs with little traveling. Plus they last a good amount of time.
To be fair, as a 3d modeler, I have to say, It takes a long time just to get a single model finished, And games are filled with them. I dont think its so much that they're getting lazy as it is that the technology is making it harder. Weapons and props back then required a lot less time to model, because they didn't have the technology yet to show you the fine details. Oh course they made up for this by texturing it more. Nowadays, the graphical standard has made it take far longer because of what is expected for everything. Large polycount models with detailed bump mapping and specular shading with high resolution textures and realistic animation are considered the norm and are more required. This plus the coporate side of the industry rushing them and expecting all those things along with the best gameplay make it a lot harder on developers. Every artist, no matter the media wants to create something the best they can, all those factors make it more difficult to create quality in a set time span. Honestly, people should atleast be grateful that they're trying to make them something of quality.
But this doesn't apply to CoD, so why appreciate it?

When a game is in development for 2-3 years at a time, I should expect a campaign to be loner then 2 1/2 hours long, I should expect it to be fun to play, and make me want to play it over and over again. If I wanted too watch Michael bay explosions 3: Return of the c4, I would go and pay 15$ at a movie theater, or pay 20$ at a walmart, I don't want to pay 60$ too see the same shit I've seen 500 fucking times.
I wanted too play "Duty calls" more times over then I wanted to play Homefront, or Medal of honor, or Call of duty 4-7, or Generic shooter from 2009-2011. As a wise man once said, a game should be able too stand on its singleplayer alone, if it can't, it should dump it and focus on its multiplayer.
PS: FFS, BF: BC2's singleplayer was longer and more fun than homefront, and that wasn't even its main focus!
Game length is sometimes up to the player, I tend to rush through games when I get them to see the story, then take a more measured playthrough on the second run and explore.
Funny how cheap games like Torchlight provide ten times the gameplay as 60 dollar "blockbuster" games
Time on Black Ops ($60) - About 35 hours
Time on cheap source games like TF2 and Gmod ($10 - $20) - Hundreds apon Hundreds of hours
That's how it always is for me. The last $60 game to last me a long time was COD4
I wish all games can be like Half life, where it is very lengthy, fun to play, and the world geometries are filled with puzzles.

So 2011 will be the cardiac arrest of singleplayer games. :ohdear:

Is 2012 just a dot?
Is 2012 just a dot?
No, it'll be a hole in the space/time continuum that will result in you finishing the game 3 days before you acquire it.
I only buy certain games now, I don't buy whatever looks cool. Ironically, this year it seems that the only games I will buy will be sequels. Except for L.A. Noire.

So it's like that game Inception? Good game that was.
That's why I stick with more complex strategy games, 4X games because the replay value is a lot higher and more fun. Shooters are getting shit, well most do. It simply isn't worth the full price.
Because non-linear first person shooters confuse console gamers.
I hate how these modern games, specifically Call of Duty, hold your hand like you're a baby during stealth missions. It was cool the first time in Call of Duty 4. But after that, do I really need to follow some guy around, having him tell me "Wait here, there's an enemy patrol up ahead"? I'd like to be able to go in and do the stealth mission myself.
In fact, FUCK STEALTH MISSIONS! I should be able to choose if I want to go in Master Chief style or Sam Fisher style for any mission.
I also hate where there are always moments where the helicopter gets shot down, I'm dizzy, and another character has to help me up. It's getting old and overused.
The stealth missions in MW2 didn't feel stealthy or challenging at at all. You were always behind the enemy, you walked through a straight line, and it was all a matter of "who shoots first". No hiding bodies, or any other strategies.
Is 2012 just a dot?
In 2012 all games are completely devoid of single-player and instead come only with cookie-cutter CoD multiplayer, and 35$ DLCs adding 2 broken maps.
Also all games, by law, cost 115$ minimum.
Fucking hell it took me 3-5 years to finish GTA : San andreas on PS2!
I dont know if im just better at games now but i can complete games like GTA IV and all of its DLC'S in about 2-3 weeks!
That said i think we need games that have the length of san andreas if its open world...If its a 3rd or 1st person shooter i think 15 to 18 hours standard-ish

The 1993 bit is pretty much every Metroid game (I haven't played Other M yet, though) in a nutshell.

Or the masses of idiots that support games like Call of Duty. Not to mention the rpg idiots and WoW players.
If you want to know what I mean then I suggest you to watch that one certain gamespot interview of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
No bro, these are Metroid.

Yeah man those guys who like playing video games you don't like are fuckin IDIOTS bro.
The first 2 CoD's were kickass back in the day. I still play them time to time. And the multiplayer of COD1 was superb. Heck, there are still servers for it, despite it's age.
COD 3 was pretty much a pile of crap IMO.
I really liked MW1, because the engine overhaul and a fairly good multiplayer. The campaign was much shorter than the older COD's but what the heck.
MW2 and Black Ops feels like you are playing the same game with some new skins and videos added to it. Plus, they're even shorter than MW1.
Something has gone terribly wrong.
Increase in graphical fidelity, increase in multiplayer focus, and increase in publisher deadlines.
Though I don't understand the idea that the series suddenly became bad with MW2. I don't think the series has shifted much even compared to CoD1. We have regenerating health, perks, and killstreaks. Besides that it is basically the same game. If you hate on people for buying CoD every year, but bought CoD2 or CoD4, sorry, you are part of the problem too.
Games are still fun.

While true, I think there's a fine line between complex and interesting maps and stupidly frustrating maps. Even if a fps had a map like the first one, if every corridor looks exactly the same it's going to be difficult to find your way around. Putting tons of random hallways and rooms everywhere and then not giving any indication on where to go can artificially pad the length of a game, like how most modern fps's pad their game lengths through deaths. That's just bad design.
Although I'd still like a come back of less simplistic level design in fps games as well as increased game length in general. Portal, MoH, CoD, KZ3, Homefront, etc. While fps's have the problem of attrition, I still think adding four or six more hours to the game would be more enjoyable than having it suddenly end. It'd also help with the characterization of squadmates/other characters in the game since it wouldn't have to be rushed. By making a singleplayer game longer, you can make the story more emotional.
Sadly I don't see this happening. I'm betting the next MW will have a five hour campaign. Hell, even Portal 2's singleplayer is supposedly only going to be four hours as well. (At least its more innovative/funnier than MW).
it took me 5 years to beat Oblivion to 100%. Every dlc quest, every side quest, main story, every faction quest, every minor/major skill at max.

Finally destroying the idea that just because it's longer, doesn't mean it's a better game.

I still don't understand Oblivion hate. I guess it's because I haven't played Morrowind.

most people regard it as a step backward... i for one got annoyed by the fact that these supposedly poor bandits are carrying glass and daedric armor even though there suppose to be rare...
that and monsters going extinct when you level up enough
