I had the same problem, you can change the settings manually:
Go to the main directory/restaurant/client
Open defaults.cs
Change this part:
$displayDevice = "OpenGL";
to
$displayDevice = "D3D";
Works for me. Mysteriously, my defaults.cs says OpenGL at the moment but that can't be it because my computer doesn't run Ogl for shit.
When I use the server selector, I sometimes get a server that has a waitress in it, but they never move or do anything, and after a while, they disappear. Where the hell is everybody?
Well there really isn't many of us to begin with, me and lego are working on it so we'll only be in the test servers, which reminds me, I've almost done the first floor of the restaurant lego I'd like to test it soon once I've got everything compiled and worked out.
Ah don't worry, i only needed to update my drivers

Screencaps?
Also you might wanna include a little auto updater program so we don't have to keep track of the updates and download the whole package again when you fix something.
I might do something like that but i can only do .NET so fuck that.

Yes, but with a vagina.
Also, textures. I've never done any textures apart from grass but it was worth a try.

Is there any way to find out your co-ordinates ingame? It would help a lot.

Try this
"C:\Program Files\MIT Media Lab\theRestaurant\theRestaurant.exe" -connect 87.54.197.139
Keep the quotes.
Make sure the game is not running when you do it
Edit: Got it working, I think.
The game should NOT be running when you do it.
