The two first could atleast get some official patches from the creators to work properly and the last one could get better graphics, more missions and co-op. It had versus multiplayer which included NPC's but no co-op.

look up KeeperKlan. they've got an engine going that is compatible with DK1s levels and it includes something like 9 campaigns. they're a very small flock, and progress is at snails pace, but it's playable and highly enjoyable.
