I highly suggest Red Dead Redemption, also Stalker has a decent story.

He said he wanted a game with a story, I love CS:S and TF2 but they aren't story games, games like that focus purely on gameplay, like L4D 1 and 2.

It doesn't matter if you play good or evil, the story is mainly the same but works both ways and is amazing. Great game, amazing story!

Oh and Condemned: Criminal Origins has a pretty interesting story to follow, criminal kind of thing, like CSI on the TV or such.
I liked the main story in Fallout, but Oblivions never really seemed all that good to me.
Don't care what anyone says, the Bioshock series has a damn good story. The endings will make you tear up. Bioshock 1's story was better but Bioshock 2's gameplay was better.
