That's why developers dumb their games down though, for casual gamers.
Elder Scrolls, highly restricted choices, little impact on the world, floating waypoints as the only means to complete a quest, simplified gameplay.
Mass Effect, fine, maybe not because of being made more casual. More just bad writing.
Dragon Age, "press X and something awesome happens"
Far Cry, unacceptable amount of hand holding plain and simple.
Hitman I edited out because Absolution is fine I guess, if only because the casual elements can be turned off.
The whole point is that I'm afraid of Dark Souls going the way of Dragon Age: Origins or Morrowind or Far Cry.
It sucks when it feels like smart, complex, interesting and cerebral games are not only unwanted by major publishers but are actively being rooted out. Even when the reason the franchise became successful was because of its complex, interesting, and cerebral elements.
It's like game people who actually care about games and treat them seriously are thrown under the bus the moment the merest hint of a profit from less discerning audiences wafts past the publisher's nose. Bioware being the most egregious example, what with them systematically taking everything that every one of their original fans loved and dragging it out behind the chemical sheds.
The Elder Scrolls is a far, far less offensive example, but it's still a situation where you have this incredibly deep and complex lore and world that's hacked apart and stitched back together to appeal to people who can't fathom the idea that a society can't be evenly divided between good and bad.
So when Foogooman says he's afraid, I fucking sympathize. Because when every major developer outside of Black Isle's tattered remains has told their core audience to take a bike ride on a railroad spike the moment they got an ounce of attention, I'd be afraid of From doing the same thing too.

I think it will just be different, a great game but a bit different than what we used to, it's really sad that Myazaki had to go. He was such a great guy. Still be optimistic instead of jumping on conclusions. Also don't use the term casual, seriously. It's a dumb word that says nothing. Casual games are okay, even if they don't fit your vision of games. I seriously doubt that Dark Souls will be so dumbed down.
The only thing I dislike so far is that there are a lot of indications that you play a single premade character. Which makes it less replayable for me, although a lot of theories say that it might be the exiled god of war. Which would be incredibly awesome.
Even if this might not be a sequel in the exact same vein, everything in the Dark Souls universe is badass.

I think the problem with the term casual is that the exact definition wavers from person to person. But in this instance, I think it's perfectly justified.
Dark Souls is the best fucking game ever fucking made because there are approximately twelve thousand eight hundred and forty two way to approach any given playthrough. The game never gets old because you never play through the game the same way twice.
You want to know why you can play through Dark Souls ten times and still have it be fun and struggle to play through Skyrim more than twice? Because even though being the Dragonborn Conan badass is "incredibly awesome", it loses its appeal after the first go round, whereas in Dark Souls you can be fucking anything, go anywhere, and do everything in the order that you choose, with your choices and execution combining to change the outcome of every run.
Taking that diversity of approach away is the equivalent of shooting the game in the kneecaps with a sawn off shotgun. It doesn't matter how cool it is to be a single type of character, in an RPG not being able to play different kinds of defined and specialized characters is fucking boring. If you take away the RPing part of an RPG it ceases to be an RPG and becomes an overly complicated and baggage laden action game.
So when they switch their audience focus towards people who just want things to be cool and badass, people who in this instance would be referred to as casuals, you're damned right it's a stupid fucking move. Because following their line of thinking hamstrings the game and destroys what made it good in the first place.

I would love an Elder Scrolls where there are three or four different chosen ones who fit into the same prophecy, and depending on your actions, you will be realized as only one of them, and NPCs (or online co-op players, holding my breath) will fill out the rest of the chosen team.
I think it's pretty much always correct to call this phenomenon "casualizing." Casual players are players who don't want to put work into a game, plain and simple. They want to sit down, push buttons and be entertained. So if I'm playing Max Payne 3 and it's full of moments where the game goes "HERE JUMP OUT AT THESE GUYS AND SHOOT THEM IN SLOW MOTION WITH INFINITE AMMO," that's casualization. When Far Cry 3 has mission popups every 2 seconds that tell you what to do and mission waypoints you can't turn off, that's casualization.
Casualizing a game means removing as much challenge and effort as you can get away with in order to appeal to casual gamers who want as much 'awesome' as they can for as little thought and effort possible. That's not wrong, people have different tastes in games, but stripping out the soul of a series in order to deliver that casual experience is as wrong as wrong can be.

want to know what the brilliant part of morrowind's story is(last bit of morrowind gushing from me, I swear)
They never explicitly state that you really are for a matter of fact Nerevar reborn. You fit all of the criteria, yeah, but you earn those abilities through work and luck. You could very well play the game as an opportunist prick taking advantage of an ancient superstition to seize political control of an entire region. Or you could play as Nerevar reborn. The game doesn't force absolutes on you, and even the divine mandates dictating to you what the truth is are coming from capricious and opportunistic divines making their accuracy questionable at best.
Dark Souls does pretty much the exact same thing. And that's why it's fun. You can take your super special power bestowed mega man plot railroad and shove it up your ass.

It's not even that. It's the maximizing of efficiency of development so that you impress your audience with the least amount of effort possible.
Had better make sure those players go into Ash Lake. Wouldn't want them to miss Ash Lake. If they didn't see Ash Lake then we wasted money making it. We had better put a mandatory quest in Ash Lake. Ash Lake should have a big neon sign around it too just in case they don't finish the main quest. We should also put Lautrec in Ash Lake if they didn't talk to him at Firelink Shrine so that we can make sure they hear Lautrec's voice lines because if they don't then we wasted money recording them.
It's that mentality that just completely rapes the atmosphere of these kinds of games.

You can't, but they're using "input delay" to make it possible.
If you could share how that's possible, then please share.

1. Equip buffable weapon
2. Roll (midroll/fatroll for largest time frame)
3. during the roll, switch to weapon you want to buff
4. Cast buff ASAP after rolling
Tada!

It doesn't work with everything though. Catalysts just make you go "what the fuck is this thing", and for some reason it just won't do it on the great lord greatsword.

this conversation is the greatest thing ever.

"you tried to use the titanite demons and both sets of giants against us." < him

"So?"
"Just trying to even the odds."
"As well as nullifying any credit from winning" < wut

You may be right but I am quite open to the new installement as long as we have not seen anything gameplaywise. I just hope they keep the old spirit of the game, character customization and freedom was truly the thing that made this game so great for me.

bonerwheel shield
Oh and regarding that sunlight blade trick, it works with any weapon buff.
Also doing it on the stone greatsword and then casting the 2hand AOE effect makes the AOE effect stupidly overpowered.
[editline]edit[/editline]
I'm not doing requests right now, too tired and gonna hit the hay soon.
How is that trick done?
They patched it working on the Stone Greatsword like four patches ago. Unfortunately.
How is that trick done?
1.fatroll for longest time frame
2.trigger the buff while you roll
3.change the weapon you are holding to what you wish to buff while your rolling
4.when you stand back up you'll buff the weapon you equipped.
relies on speed.

That's not how you do it man. I just invaded Anor Londo, found the host, a summon and Solaire waiting at that small entrance to the hall with the giants. I backed off so they followed, used Fire Tempest as they came around the corner killing the summon. Solaire seemed to get interested in something else and didn't disturb me as I fought the host. He kept using Estus and most of my hits took off a huge chunk of his HP. Eventually I got a backstab on him while he was on low HP and I was out of stamina.
He indicted me.

They'd already killed everything, included the titanite demon. I ran in there first and then NOPE'd back out. I had to open the front door to run out to the giants out front.
