Oh wow, that must have been the most annoying thing ever for you.
I lost the Dumb and Dumber fight with 1 hit left on him, and he did a megaslam attack and 1hit me.
THAT was the most annoying thing ever
what's your build like? that'd be good to know
otherwise, i'd just have to remind you to be patient. the sanctuary guardian and artorias are the game holding up a brick wall to any progress you've made with aggressive tactics.
other tips include:
an upgraded spear, like the silver knight spear, can be helpful since it strikes quick and has reach, dropping much of the time it normally takes to get close for an attack. [del]i don't know how well a spear thrust can stagger bosses, however[/del] damage is the only factor in staggering a boss, so see if a chain of two-handed attacks are enough and choose a weapon with that in mind.
try dodging more than blocking, which is frequently a better option against larger opponents.
a shield is good, but don't think you'll be able to block more than a couple of attacks at a time. yes, i'll tell you to dodge mostly and block rarely, but there are times when you'll want the comfort of a shield. just make sure it is light, so you don't slip over a weight threshold. upgraded grass crest might fit the bill.
don't turtle. two-hand your weapon whenever you get an opportunity to strike for max damage, unless there is an opportunity where your one-hand attack is quick enough to safely hit where a two-hand animation can't.
finally, i found it best to fight artorias from medium-close range. far enough that he'll do his wolf leap attack often, which is a good time to get in one hit, and close enough so you can reach him before he finishes his powerup. if you're quick, try hitting him hard while he's charging.
the difficult bosses in this game are a really good way to exercise your nerve, since you rarely defeat them the first time. it makes you tense when you re-enter their arena. since the best strategy then is usually to observe fully the attacks that killed you, you'll be engaging them without fighting back for a good while. all the pre-battle nerve plus the time spent blocking, dodging, waiting, and watching gets you really pumped. you have to deal with it and persevere to win.
i think i might be able to feasibly argue how the repetition of a video game's boss battles can train you to function better in high-pressure situations

okay i'm a little late so it looks like you're doing just fine. now it's a matter of keeping your stategy but be able to survive long enough for just one more hit.

do spears break his "charging"? because if you cant break that shit gets bad if you mess up once
also, i wouldn't say a shield is good at all because 2handing your weapons can break/stop the charging better, and it does more damage, using a shield just makes it harder to counter-strike him
you just need to wail on him with a strong enough weapon and he'll eventually be interrupted
Welp, after 8 tries with 8 humanity on Taurus Demon and no Greataxe, I give up.

are you on PC? I'm SL101 and I got it in NG+
might as well just buy it later, no reason to farm

bosses are staggered by a fixed amount of normal damage, but a spear might be too weak, yeah. i edited the post to include info on two-handing. it's a bit of a reflex for me to switch handing right as i attack, i wasn't even thinking about it.
however, i will disagree with you on the shield matter. the danger is in the weight it adds to your load, and the temptation to overuse it, but both are issues that can be managed. you can carry a shield and still be quick enough to two-hand swing. the swap is nearly instant and it won't add any time to your attack if you hit alt / Y just before your opportunity to strike. with the grass crest, you can still get your recovery boost when it's on your back.
the more skilled will simply not get hit at all, but if it's your first time, a light shield can be a nice thing to have.
Anybody get any luck with the GFWL connection problem yet? It's still forcing me to offline mode every time I start.

that makes sense with stagger, last time i fought him i was 2handing a katana, so I thought it was calculated like player poise
and yeah, I've never been one to swap hands often in fights, unless completely necessary. On the topic of shields, I always forget how hard artorias can be on some people's first run (he's my favorite boss so I usually reload a save to fight him sometimes) but the problem is that like you said, people can over use it, like starting to block some of his combos and getting staggered. I just like to tell people to just try rolling him, because he's great practice for it. Especially with manus up ahead
I tried the white knight spear, did 80 damage per hit (two handed), I'm getting pretty annoyed.

your early zeiwander looked like it was working for you since you got him to 1 bar with that. Do you have the grass crest shield? Because you should wear that on your back in the meantime for stamina
instead of asking everyone else just keep trying what you want to try and expirementing, it makes the game a lot more enjoyable.
if you're really having such a hard time why don't you just summon someone
people usually put signs down for kalameet and artorias right outside of his arena
I've been experimenting with damn everything that I see works for everyone else. Pyromancy is shit, even though I got that crap buffed up all the way, the zeiwander does damage but by the time my character manages to swing the damn thing he's all the way across the arena, and every other weapon I use gives me about 80 damage per hit, and I gotta do that about 100 times when I only get an opening every minute or so. I only managed to get that through sheer luck, and every attempt since has him doing that followup attack after everything, even if I dodge it.
And GFWL has been acting up for me as well, so I can't log-in.
looks like you need to [sp]become skillful[/sp]

Aye, guess so. I have no problem dodging, so I don't use shields for this fight. I just don't like spending an hour on a fight because my weapons do jack squat.
If you have no problem dodging you could use the red tearstone ring. Ups your damage by 50%.
I have No skill
I figured out the regular attacks were quicker, and did about 200 damage. Good enough for me.
is there anyway to use the dsfix hud but use the regular boss health bar?
great success

i beat artorias with velka's rapier
that does like NEGATIVE damage to him, it's ridiculous. took 20 minutes.
I wouldn't be so upset with GFWL if I could at least use my fucking 360 controller uuuuuuuuuggghhhh

It can't detect your xbox controller? I thought that was pretty much standard with any windows machine.

I can still use the controller to hit the Home button and browse through the GFWL menus (which is moot since it won't let me sign in), but I can't actually use it in-game. I know I'm not the only one with this sudden problem.
I've just been using a ps3 controller rigged up via bluetooth. Works the same.
How do I get past the Dragon on the bridge so I can get into the Sunlight covenant?
run past him
All that happens is he fries me to death in rapid succession.
so be patient
