The thing is, usually naming something "2" implies continuity.
Not really. It implies it's part of the same story line. The story line doesn't need to continue, it could run alongside the timeline of the first game, or before. Who knows, look what they pulled with Prepare to Die, where you're sent back to the past. I think Dark Souls 2 is fine.
The thing is, usually naming something "2" implies continuity. But what continuity could there be when presumably Dark Souls kind of ended the whole game? Far be it from me to try and speculate a storyline, lord knows the studio will do a great job, I'm just cautious. But I'm sure it'll be good.
Time distortion. Allows them to do anything with this universe. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up you're in an alternate reality. If it's direct to the first game's story...not sure what they'll do. Dark Lord ending and you go back in time before the first DS?
Huh. Good point. Either way, I'm sure it'll be great. I want more Anor Londo-esque environments.
I hope they add some kind of desert environment
Looks like GFWL again, ah well. Can't win every battle, really excited for this though. almost had a heart attack when I saw it, thought it god of war/dragon age 3 or something when it first started, so I just alt tabbed. And when I heard the music amp up I thought "Wait, this sounds like Dark souls"
INCOMING SPECULATION First off, this is almost certainly going to be a prequel. Given the way Dark Souls ends I doubt From would make either one of the two endings canon and take that choice out of the player's hands. The woman could possibly be Velka. She's clearly bird-related. It could be that back in those days she was nicer, less into Ravens and more into nice brown birds. Her and the player seem to be in cahoots. In the snowy area (which is very similar to the painted world) there is also a giant bird's nest, two other possible Velka connections. Could the story revolve around the occult plot to kill the gods? That might make sense considering I think the people with the porcelain masks could be early version of the Lord Blades. They share the choice of mask material and the curved swords. Sent after the player and Velka in defense of Gwyn?
Pfft all I need is the mother fucking SUN.

If you're being sent to take out Gwyn, you'd know you're going to fail unless this is another reality. I agree on it being a prequel in some form, however.
“Namco today proudly announced that the critically acclaimed Dark Souls saga marches forward with Dark Souls II, currently in development at FromSoftware in Tokyo, Japan. Dark Souls II will continue a legacy of goading its passionate fan base with unrelenting challenge and suffering that are considered a hallmark of the series; while presenting new devilishly devised obstacles for players to overcome. Dark Souls II will be available for the PS3, X360 and PCs. Built upon the foundation established by Souls series creator and Dark Souls II Supervisor, Hidetaka Miyazaki with development helmed by FromSoftware Director Tomohiro Shibuya, Dark Souls II will feature a new hero, a new storyline, and an unfamiliar world for players to survive in while delivering its signature brand of unrelenting punishment that players hunger for. Epic battles with gruesome enemies and blood-thirsty bosses await adventurers as they traverse through a devastated world filled with death and despair; only those who are strong willed or cunning can survive this journey to achieve great glory. Players seeking to share their experience will discover a revamped server-based multiplayer mode that will put a distinct Dark Souls II twist on the concept of playing with others. Carlson Choi, Vice President of Marketing at NAMCO BANDAI Games America said: “Dark Souls II retains the core essence of Dark Souls while evolving to present new twists and challenges that are sure to please longtime fans and attract new comers to the series. FromSoftware is going to take a very dark path with Dark Souls II; players will need to look deep within themselves to see if they have the intestinal fortitude to embark on this journey.” Tomohiro Shibuya, FromSoftware Director on Dark Souls II added: “This new chapter in the Dark Souls saga presents opportunities for us to drive innovation in gameplay design, develop an entirely new story, and expand the scope of the world in which the player interacts with the game. We have taken these necessary steps with Dark Souls II in order to evolve the overall experience of the Dark Souls series. The entire development team is striving to make Dark Souls II an experience that is fresh while not forsaking its roots in presenting players with challenging gameplay. Our goal is to surprise and delight our fans with new experiences and plot twists while enticing new players to join our dark journey.”
MY INTESTINES ARE READY
I'm hoping it's a sequel. It's not at all uncommon for developers to choose which ending is canon or not. I'd like to know what the world would be like after the fire was reignited.
Now that the mass excitement has passed it just hit me that we're going to have to suffer more insane bosses. Fuck.

Also, the past is far more interesting than the future imo.

it appears to be gwyn fighting a dragon
Gwyn's sword is looking a little iffy on that helmet if it's him.
Too be honest I just watched the trailer (it was hard finding it...), and it doesn't exactly look like a prequel. It looks like the canon ending would've been letting the [sp]fire burn out[/sp], and you're currently in the "dark age of man" [editline]8th December 2012[/editline] looks extraordinarily dark, like there are things far worse than dragons.
I hope the game makes you feel legitimately hopeless. I hope the setting is more soul-crushing than anything else ever seen in a game.
I hope the game makes you feel legitimately hopeless. I hope the setting is more soul-crushing than anything else ever seen in a game.
Judging by that trailer it definitely will. I mean this part just screams it:
Crazy theory, but what if it is a sequel and the dragons are created from the Everlasting Dragon? It can't die and it was actually creating dragons (potentially the MC). Maybe they actually got turned into full-fledged dragons, causing the resurgence of dragons in Lordran.
who knows? maybe we're not even in Lordran in DS2.
Judging by that trailer it definitely will. I mean this part just screams it: -picture here-
That oozes the theme of being utterly hopeless yet trying to push forward anyway. Going down even though the goal is in sight.
who knows? maybe we're not even in Lordran in DS2.
It looked like Anor Londo was way off in the distance. Then again, could be a different city. If we're in Lordran we're far away from Anor Londo.
That oozes the theme of being utterly hopeless yet trying to push forward anyway. Going down even though the goal is in sight.
Exactly. It's perfect. How you described it there is exactly what Dark Souls is about.
Why are people so shocked that it's a sequel? Kings field had a bunch of sequels, and Demon souls was a spiritual successor for that. If I'm not mistaken, weren't they going to make Demon Souls 2 instead of Dark souls, but they didn't own the rights for it, or some dumb legal shit
