Maybe it has to do how Minecraft "folds" the textures on the model.

Singleplayer commands has a fly command and a noclip command

Google SSPcommands, they are the most used mod ever. You can fly (fly) at whatever speed (setspeed X), give yourself items (item *item code or name* *value*), and spawn monsters (spawn *mob* *value*).

The stair part on the left is the top left corner of the texture.
The stair part on the right is the whole left of the texture.
That's the simplest way to do it in programming terms really since then both quads just have the texture starting from the top left corner on them.

I restarted my session and found a large cave system. (large as in almost 2 miles) I found diamonds everywhere. After getting most of it, I said to my self "Ok I need to be careful just in case I crack a rock and lava flows out." seconds later, I found diamonds in the ground. I cracked it and proceeded to fall for 3 seconds and land in a pit of lava losing everything.
