Well, replacing the drowners with lava blades has been almost painless, save for the few mobs that spawned on TOP of the lava blades. (I enclosed the lava completely and stupidly forgot to put torches on top which allowed mobs to spawn there :saddowns:)
They seem to be holding up alright, but will they be able to handle all the floors once they're brought online? Only time will tell!
Some guy dug up a pretty big coal vein (I count +50 in there) and left it all unused:

They are pretty easy really. Mobs spawn in the dark, water pushes mobs, mobs are killed by certain things, items flow in water.
These 4 simple concepts are all you need to make the most complicated of traps.

I always made mine wrong, starting with the grinder, and then building a massive room and it never worked
