There's a bukkit plugin that you can use to disable slimes from spawning, it's what I had to resort to lest we be over-run by unkillable glitched slimes. Look for "BMod".
are slimes like a server side mod because my friend and I hollowed out a huge space with TNT and there were no slimes but they're everywhere on other servers

One of the Dev team (I think it was Jeb) said it would be Thursday a few days ago on Twitter, before they changed it to next week. These "people" just don't read Twitter every ten seconds.
