vassals who like you will vote for whoever you vote for. elective succession is fine as long as your vassals like you more than any potential competition.
but i'm pretty sure they [i]are[/i] voting. if you have duke vassals they always get voting power in electives.

Can anyone give me some adive on how to start in EU3?
I always loose money and fail to expand, the alliance chains are fucking me up badly. Also what research should I bother with first?
Prussian North America.
Oh how I would love a Prussian Canada.

Hire a high level master of mint and get the National Bank NI. These allow you to maximize your minting without inflation. Centralization is obviously no-brainer. When not at war, put your military and navy maintenance to half.
As for teching, focus on government tech 4 and then land for the men at arms/longbow advantage. After that, balance tech for all investments. I used to do the method of focusing on 1 or 2 at any given moment, but then I learned overtime that this isn't necessary because starting at tech 20 the tech costs are high so it's pointless to bother with concentrated investment.

Never mint money unless you are going to end up taking out a loan (you pay the interest of the loan every month which can make your situation exponentially worse), invest heavily in government

holy shit you're right. since none of your ducal vassals are in your de jure kingdom, they can't vote.
this only works until these areas become incorporated into the kingdom, though.

Yep, EU3 doesn't have any real "de jure" borders, and not many event or AI goals o try and be neat, it just favors bordering provinces, and that's about it.

i don't think they really favor bordering provinces that much either.
i see castille taking provinces in the middle of the hre, or france taking croatia, or austria having a single province in england.
like they just conquer whatever

Thanks, I always went for governement, looked like the best tech at the start. Also what about traders? Just I send them to particular spots, like ports that are far away and what is it about the autosend function?

Yeah, I realllly wish EU3 had some kind of "de jure" system or province system, rather than just a bunch of provinces with no real sense of organization. CK2 and V2 had a better system of this.
Hopefully EU4 will have something of the sort.

they should have missions to take over certain cultural areas and assimilate them. that way at least if they go and try and take some weird area not bordering them, they try and take over a nice looking block of land.

And early on, I would be against autosend because they can be expensive if you don't have the Merchant Adventures NI or full plutocracy.

There is the "free our people" CB, but the AI tends to not use that for some reason, and it is not really a prominent CB. What we need is a "Unite our people under one flag" CB once you have, say, 50% of a culture in your grasp.

what i mean is for, example, the french getting a mission that will reward them if they own all provinces that are "flemish" or "saxon". or own all provinces within a region. the ai seems to follow missions in eu3 pretty well. it would just be tedious and clunky to implement without some streamlined way to do it.
[editline]15th December 2012[/editline]
also give other nations in the area the mission to get rid of foreign powers in their region.
so like in the french take some random province(as they are inclined to do in eu3) in germany that happens to be saxon or w/e, they will get a mission that tells them to take all saxon regions. then every german state that has saxon as a primary culture would be given a mission to push the french out.
[editline]15th December 2012[/editline]
it would give a ton of structure to the ai's conquests so there aren't splotches of the lucky nations all over the damn place.

Problem is, it isn't all that realistic to conquer entire cultures. If the french went to war against saxons, it doesn't mean they all think they are superior and wish to assimilate them or anything, usually wars in this period are not over culture but over economy and politics.

i know but it makes the nations blob really weird!
i just want them to try and form neat borders.
[QUOTE=yawmwen;38838982]i know but it makes the nations blob really weird!

I consider the messed up borders to kind of be more or less a normal thing, since borders back then would get shifted all the time due to the smallest of things. However, the game could use a late phase crystallization period to reflect the period of change in the 18th and 19th century, which could lead to the borders automatically unfucking themselves. Think rebels, but scripted to do things in a neat fashion.

Well, it just looks weird because we are used to a certain political map, but yeah, I know what you mean. They should add an ai script encouraging rich border reagions and far off colonies rather than a single province in the middle of siberia.

I don't think mutapa is going to win.
Also, the reason mali is in inca is because I did a convert save from CK2 and the muslims never lost power/tech and most kingdoms/sultanates were muslim, so a gigantic mali is in the top 4 factions.
Oh, and castille got converted to muslimness in CK2.

Which Fixpack?
[editline]15th December 2012[/editline]
One problem with Vic2 is if you switch countries with the "Tag" command, the AI stops moving their troops around when you switch back (unless the unit was already on a mission) So you have to save an re-load for them to start using their units again.
Though that is a good way to make a country loose a war if you want them to.
The best way is to just delete all their units, yesmen and send a peace treaty to your nation of choice.
Unless it's annex.
Then you lose.
