CK2 basically had dicerolls as well, it was just that the effectiveness of the diceroll was determined by the Marshall Trait. Like, a guy with 20 Marshall and four stars for military leadership will get fucking gold dice rolls and steam roll shit.
Well if it's already determined by marshal trait then it's not really effectively dice rolls now is it.
The combat isn't entirely determined by it, but the Marshal trait determines how effective they are. It mainly just adds to the combat, with there being some added percentages for Marshal and Terrain. It's dicerolls + modifiers basically.
[editline]9th February 2013[/editline]
I like it since the combat is less random, but the thing is, it's not that changed from previous iterations. It just made it so that it mixed and mashed some things together from the other engine games, and had it so that there were different unit types for the different phases of combat, with it being more or less effective depending on the amount/tech.
even hoi uses "dice rolls" for the combat doesn't it? there are just a ton of variables that affect the rolls.
Each side of the battle randomly targets an enemy division, and will keep that target for the entire round...
Each division will use one defense point for every shot fired at it. A defense point used creates an 80% chance the shot will miss. If a division has used all defense points in the round, then every shot fired has a 60% chance of missing...
Strength loss is caused by a "2 die size", meaning it will randomly cause 1 or 2 points strength loss...
Organization loss is caused by a "3 die size", meaning it will randomly cause 1, 2 or 3 points lost in organization...
these are glorified dice rolls.

they are still fun dice rolls! and it isn't like combat is completely random, just some things are left to chance(chance is always fun).
HoI3 also has a lot of modifiers to dice rolls "in disguise", so you sshould always monitor their bonuses. Even a grand armada can get shattered if you are not careful.

Btw, these are interesting. Not telling you to keep posting them in an obliged manner, but just letting you know you aren't alone in enjoying these.
I have to say, playing paradox games without pausing doesn't seem too thrilling to me.
It's Bizarre, I like to think I'm good at EU3 and CK2, I'm adequate when it comes to Victoria 2 but the minute I try to play Hearts of Iron 3 I fuck up. I really need to start trying to learn that game properly again.
Or just let the AI do everything and see what happens.

AI unit production raises threat, and if you're trying to be a peaceful Germany, that's not what you want. Hell, unit production in general makes the UK pissy.
So I started a game of Victoria 2, decided to go for an interesting challenge and so started playing as Afghanistan. Had a successful war against Khiva and snatched up most of the country, then bided my time for a while. I then noticed I had a reclaim core casus belli against the Sikh Empire so I decided to march against thme next...
Then their 120,000 unit army curb stomped my 40,000 man army.
Where in the mother of god did all those Sikhs come from

India has extremely dense amounts of population for the time, especially in the northern & coast regions.
If you're playing as Afghanistan make sure you have very good relations with Russia, The Indian States, Sikh, and Persia. They're all numerically superior and will steamroll you if you don't know what you're doing. Smaller fish in Central Asia and whatever you can reach in the Pakistan portion of India is up for grabs.
Yeah, I teamed up with Russia and reclaimed enough land to form the Durrani Empire. I'm now biding my time and snapping up what smaller asian states I can. The latest conquests were the Kazakhstan and Jodphur regions.

Recent PDM game where I released nations at the start of the game from UK/GB, Russia, Mexico, and USA.
I'm playing as New England, year is 1897. My main plans so far have been completed, so I'm kindof at a loss at what to do.
I formed a three-way alliance to secure the North American continent between Me, CSA, and Canada, while releasing puppets from the USA in multiple wars (mostly using all the infantry from africa.) I allied with Prussia-NGF-Germany very early on, and have maintained a relatively stable relationship since. This let me conquer Africa unabated from French interference, besides the giant global war caused by my war to annex Egypt. Which resulted in me taking Egypt and New York, Germany taking French-Comte, and Canada taking Montana.
From the start of the game Africa has been my main focus, I have over 20% world production of Coffee, Tobacco, Spices, Cotton, and Sugar. Still on the edge whether or not I should start making them states.
Alaska & California are my puppets, and I am in a war to puppet the USA after it fell to 9nth (Australia took their place, heh) after my war with them. After that I will probably just hang out and drink beer with Germany for the rest of the game, but considering the CSA just had a Militant Socialist revolution and Canada is constantly butting into my SOI's, I might have to do some more North American shenanigans.
Other than that... Well, I built the Suez Canal, and freed Panama from Colombia and am now building the Panama Canal. Oh, and I control Shikoku with Japan in my SOI. All Social & Political reforms except for the fact that since my admin efficiency was strained I had the chance to get rid of Minimum Wage, so I did.
Spain is a Democracy with the Communist Party in power. CSA is getting more and more divided in ideology, while the USA is still standing strong, somehow. Austria is in German SOI. Sikh Empire is the only civilized Indian state. I thought for the longest time Spain was going to form Iberia, but UK/GB prevented them. Australia, Canada, and USA have all been fighting for the last few GP slots.
I've remained in a constant 4/5th place.
So I'm just playing as Austria Hungary in PDM. I have all of Italy under my control, liberated some areas such as westfallia from Prussia, all of the sudden, THOUSANDS OF BRIGADES OF REBELS SWARM UP. VIENNA HAD LITERALLY 3000 BRIGADES ON IT.
Then HM's government was put in place, I still maintained most of my power over the Central European region and I generally had no problem with it since it will keep the reactionaries out of power.
What game would any of you suggest as a starting game out of the paradox interactive games?
What game would any of you suggest as a starting game out of the paradox interactive games?
CK2 or EU3 or the upcoming March of the Eagles.
Crusader Kings 2 is really easy to get into once you figure out the basics.
[editline]10th February 2013[/editline]
I say CK2, mainly because although there are a lot of upper house politics involved in it, you don't have to deal with a ton of bullshit like in the other games. Such as Infamy and so on. Easier to use it as a branching point.
And wait till there are sales on all the game and dlc's.

Sorry if I'm threadspamming, but just one more before I go to bed.
WW2 never occured in this 1914 AAR Darkest Hour mod. It's basically Japan vs France & Britain.
Not even a Paternal Autocrat Japan, they're basically Hitler Japan. (In retrospect that previous statement was tremendously stupid.)
What game would any of you suggest as a starting game out of the paradox interactive games?
what historical period and gameplay style are you looking for? if you want ww2, go hoi3, if you want colonialism then go with eu3, if you want the industrial revolution get vicky2.
some games(hoi3) have a steeper learning curve, but there is really no point is buying a game simply because it's easy. if you like the time period you will be motivated to learn the game.
EU3 is probably the easiest.
EU3 is probably the easiest.
if you want pure ease then ck2 is way easier imo.
[editline]10th February 2013[/editline]
it's actually really hard to "fail" in ck2. the worst that generally happens is you getting knocked down a few ranks.
