Hearts of Iron 3 is really fun to play with friends. Only problem is that it's not gonna be very balanced, meaning that one guy might get a lot more resources than the other.
Not really an RTS in the traditional sense, but I would recommend it. Playing a round with a few other friends can lead to some great fun. First you befriend everyone and start taking over the world. Sooner or later someone becomes corrupt and wants to take over. Fighting ensues. You? Chill and play it cool, massing the largest army on the face of the earth waiting until someone is soft enough, or until someone crosses the line. Then you simply ride high while everyone is weak. But that usually never works and it ends up being a shit-flinging fest all the way.
Anno is a really great series, honestly. It really focuses on economy and you can win by trading and giving money to your ally to do all the fighting. In other words, dirty deal. Give him the money so you don't have to get your hands dirty haha. That, or just swarm him with your own men. But Anno IS focused on trade, so the military is quite a weak aspect of the game.
