Don't play consoles much, but new hardware always gets me hyped as fuck. Mainly I'm interested in the hardware details and seeing what they come up with.

Yeah, I've found more reference to it and that controller picture, mostly saying it was fake because the controller was making rounds/created by somebody on "popular website here". I've yet to see anyone reference the source of the console part of the picture, though.

Well they ditched it on the Vita so I would be worried of it disappearing from the PS4.

The Vita was a touch focused device, and Sony felt like it needed a more touch oriented menu design.
The PS4 has reason to keep the XMB, though Sony might have come up with something more clever during the PS3's lifetime.

Yes.
Controllers already cost about as much as a game for the damn console. Now that it has got a digital screen, vibration(?), and its wireless, its probably going to cost half as much as the console itself to buy another.

Really I don't see the need for a gimmick like a touchscreen on the controller, the controller already has buttons so why pull a wiiU/vita on a basic controller that you aren't supposed to be intently focused on while playing.
Splitscreen/Local Multiplayer will get brushed under the table when the basic peripherals for the system are going to double in cost again.
