Not really. I got pretty far on medium without drinking since I had blood magic and a couple mana regenerating items.

I only used maybe 8 mana regenerating items on my necromancer.
You don't use much mana, but the debuffs steal your stats so your bar shrinks. When the debuffs end you get a load of mana back. Together with blood mage you don't need to regain mana through items.

Well unless you have blood magic, I was playing a Promethean ley lines mage/rouge and I had to use booze in larger fights.

I've never been able to pull off a successful necromancer. It always seems to just get me killed rather than help me.

Their second spell does good damage and at lower levels makes your enemy go to sleep without hurting you. If you can survive your first level you're pretty much all set.

That's quite cheap to be honest. it costs less than the bolt of mass destruction's sale price.
I think the best description for this game is "Baby's first roguelike: for adults."
This is the perfect roguelike to introduce people into the genre and gameplay of spending countless lives and hours crawling through dungeons, but it's also perfect for more experienced players. It's a lighter dose. There's a brilliantly simple UI (albeit with some clunkiness still), and it's super easy to just jump into and get started. It does however manage to deliver a solidly gripping experience. It starts off simple enough that anyone can join in, but it quickly turns into a more hardcore experience further down the dungeon which is perfect for people with experience in the genre.
I'm so glad I bought this game. I was initially seriously skeptical about this. What does this give me that another roguelike doesn't. How is this better than IVAN, for example? I mean IVAN is graphical and ridiculously humorous, so how can this be any better and for 5 dollars? I took the chance, however, and it has already paid off. Once again, it's casual enough in the beginning to get you hooked, but then it does really deliver a true roguelike experience.
That's not to say I still love to play a crazy hardcore roguelike, but this game is worth it even for hardcore fans.
