On my way out, the few times I needed it, I found wheat+tree visible from roughly 500,500.
Looked like somebody (not me) kept this alive for at least some time I was near spawn.
Once met somebody with diamond sword killing me there, so watch it.
It's not an unknown location to grievers or others just liking to kill.
I'm not far out currently, I could check spawn out to see how it looks like.
Perhaps visit 2k2k as well, never been there.
edit: as diversion, I could build something on the actual 2k2k location of the map.

You'll need to head out further than 5k. The nether is relatively unexplored in most places other than the highways, since people were too busy rushing back into the overworld to concentrate on farming other stuff.

Of any minecraft server I've been on, 2b2t has to be my favorite. The rich culture and history that is displayed with some simple exploration is amazing, and there is always something new to find. And indeed, somehow in all of the chaos, beauty remains in the most unlikely places, and a community of nomads and visitors shapes the landscape each in their own way.

How did you get the dynamic shadows mod to work? I install optifine, and then the mod, but it never works. No shadows, no DoF (which apparently comes with the mod).

Yeah, I started thinking about that after I posted it, most people use the nether to travel really far distances so you can probably find Jungles and new biomes like that, in between the portals.

You don't have to be that far out. I've been less than 30k out and found jungle, mushroom, swamp biomes etc.

I was working there yesterday creating a path that encircled spawn as far as the protection would let me. There is also an adjacent tunnel leading outwards into the -x direction at y56 or so. I didn't get very far but there already are simple exits from the spawn as it exists now with protection enabled.
