No Imperator, that base was before vertically placed stairs were added. They're just stairs placed on top of each other.

You're going to have to point out which one you're talking about as there are several. Also what's not pictured is a museum, a huge cathedral, a huge factory that generates smoothstone and a huge bridge.

I mean the one you showed from the inside. It looks very big form that picture but i suppose that's because of the building style. I tend to build huge stuff and then have to paradoxically subdivide rooms more to make them appear bigger.
Also I like bases like that. I'm going similar, but with less castles.

The second picture wasn't a castle, it was an underground "Dwarf highway"-base thing. It looked like this (pic) And the museum, we had one of almost every block (with the exception of un-obtainable in case the base got raided), and a sign identifying it.
This is a really basic drawing of the layout of the highway thing. You have no idea how much TNT it took to blast out the caverns (of course, it was all duped back when we had the plugin in January)

Your being a idiot. It's the the total lack of a DVD Rom drive that makes it fast. That extra 10-16 oz's really drags computer speeds down.

As for the digging, I think you shouldn't cry about having to use lots of duped TNT.
We are in a snow hill biome and two of us are currently leveling a rather huge area by hand using single stacks of TNT and otherwise tools.
The block museum is a cool idea, I might do something similar.
