Surrounding your chests in lava works some of the time.
protip: the zombe ore finder can be configured to detect chests, furnaces and dispensers.

The only good protection strategy I've heard against X-rays in SMP was covering your chests in iron ore, though if you try doing that with a cluster of chests together it won't look too convincing.

Coal ore would be better since there tend to be larger chunks of that in one area than iron ore.

Both can be turned on/off in any X-ray mod, most people probably have them off.
(Lava is probably default on, as few would like to miss that. But to fancy Lava
formations mean people will look behind)
A certain distance to spawn and/or your base (xray, chestfinder have roughly
160 block limit, afaik server does not give client more as 10 chunk distance),
keep important stuff in inventory and spreading backup chest with more
important stuff has a certain degree of certainty. Also keep bed & chest at
certain distance.
My experience is that only a radius like 1k or 2k from spawn is actively
searched by some with nodus. Outside of that people only seem to
stumble upon them and sometimes missing obvious chests
(obvious if they had some chest-finder).
Either that or people are more friendly at greater distances.

Well I had fun on my couple of hours on this.
Some guy called 'sainteirik' was at the spawn and helped me build up supplies to survive. He ended up leading me over to his fort through the nether and fell down a hole to lava before he got there. He lost enchanted diamond gear, stacks of chicken and a stack of diamond.

Agreed, it's karma. When you help newfags you're only helping them help themselves (meaning your own stuff). A lot of Facepunchers sadly don't understand this. Newfags at spawn should be left alone/or killed as a way to cull the weak.
