I was on a quest for snow to make a golem for my xp grinder. Found a base. Looted it. Here's the take away:

Only bits that I had before was a set of unenchanted diamond armor, diamond axe, shovel, hoe and enchanted pick.
The enchanted armor:
-Plate has Protection IV
-Legs have Protection II
-Boots have Explosive Protection II and Feather Falling III

Been playing on this server for a few days now, got out of spawn, almost starved to death, found some melons that saved my life, now im chilling in my house. Haven't really seen anybody else yet. I loved the long journey away from spawn, i saw so many awesome old ruins of buildings..
How about hide a chest in the middle of the ocean at the bottom, dig around the chest so there is even more ocean around it. People won't be able to get to it without drowning or an enchanted helmet, which you conveniently have.
or lay down a door or iron bars/half glass and make yourself an air pocket

if you place a chest similarly to how abandoned mine shaft chests are spawned under an ocean, xrayers probably wont check it out.

you could also place dispensers far underground between iron, coal and diamonds. or under lava.

i just started play on this server and by god is it fun trying to get out beyond the waste of spawn and hunting for food. I'm only 12k out and still scared to build a base how far do people recommend to go to before settling down?

Rack up on food. Do this anyway possible, mushroom farming, wheat, watermelon, just food. Then collect TEN FUCK obsidian, this will be the hardest part without raiding/using mods. Then walk around with a sword and kill endermen, collect atleast 3 enderpearls. Then wander in the direction you want until you find a nether portal. Then mine all the way up to the top bedrock border, keep looking around until you are highest possible at y 126. look at the top bedrock, hold down right click with enderpearls then jump, and your on the top of bedrock. just walk forward until you reach about 15-20k out in the nether place down a portal, then you'll be out in the overworld at like 120k120k.
