That was you? Mate, you saved my virtual life. I was three hearts away from starving and nothing but torches and a workbench to my name. I was cutting down trees just looking for apples at the time.
I searched the entire island I am currently on. It's about 10,000 blocks by 10,000 blocks, and nobody lives on it except me.
So lonely :(
Currently living inside an island, found a nice bunch of resources, making a large farm so I can start placing geocaches of food in different areas, and if I make enough I'll post some of the coords here. Then I'll make a base somewhere past the 10k mark.

I really want to visit there sometime, the base jump looks awesome.
Alright people. I had died and all my goodies were lost so I gave up and started stalking people.
I was stalking this one person named "phrrhiccomedy" This person did not notice me follow them into the nether, Nor did he/she notice me at all in the nether. Phrrhiccomedy found a portal in the nether and entered it (as so did I after he/she did) Phrriccomedy had starved to death moments later after leaving the portal from the nether, so i told him/her I was stalking him/her all this time and blah blah blah. I looked at the cords to see where I was at and what do you know. I'm bloody close to the old Facepunch base 2k2k. So I decide to go check it out for the first time. When I arrive I find the place griefed as said in the op. But it was fun and amazing to explore and see the ruins of the old compound. You guys put so much work into it to make it what it was. It was so big and so much to it. It was also nice to see you guys leave signs stating you were there.
I don't know who built this shrine.

Man, so many people found the easy way out of spawn. Finding people that were nice enough to lend food, random chests with goodies

I was just walking with about two health, all of a sudden I saw a watermelon item just laying on the ground next to tilled dirt. It was like the luckiest thing ever, and the hardest thing ever since it was right by spawn and I didnt have any wood. :( took me forever to get started when I see stories like this where people just find this awesome shit and are set for entire virtua life in 2b2t

Sounds like you got the easiest way out possible. My second time out of spawn, I couldn't get any bonemeal because there was a massive spike in players because the facepunchers started to come back and leaving my shitty hole in the ground meant certain death. I had to salvage a wrecked wheat farm and wait for wheat to grow while people walked around aboveground. Eventually I got killed by a ~pr0 mlg~ raider, but at least he was too busy going to spawn to destroy the wheat.
Wow all the portals at spawn seem to have disappeared. That sucks ass.
first time i joined, after 10min some invite me to a random base i think his name was pyro1v1aniac or something
we got griefed after like 3 days , went solo from there. gotten to know more people, losing more bases etc....
this was about 12-13 months ago? before hunger and shit
