I am used to servers where "no rules" or "minimal rules" means, if it is in any way "harming" other players, don't do it.

On 2b2t.net it means if the server admin doesn't like it, he will (try to) disable it server side.
(Like flying, boats and currently chat spam)
For coordinates, shift-F3 will do. It's plain vanilla since 1.2.5. It does not show those sound graphic stuff.
For mod with nice minimap/xraymod with small extras I can recommend cjb.
Anything more and you will end up with stuff like nodus.

Farms barely having enough food to provide for a single person, let alone the dozens of people I imagine it once cradled.
I stand now, in the middle of these ruins and I give a moment of silence to a fallen city.

Reading the OP more thoroughly, I know now what town it was that I discovered. It's amazing how much I have found, and how little is left unharmed. It's truly a chaotic server.

Look for "patch walls" aka. gigantic walls of netherack that go on for long distances and seem completely out of place. That is the separation between different content patches of terrain generation, which seems to have been changed for every patch. Thus by counting those patch walls as you move outwards from spawn, you can roughly determine what patch of terrain you might be in. Nether fortresses will only be found in 1.0 and above patches (about 6-8 patch walls).
As for determining if a particular piece of terrain in your current patch has not been explored before, look for the tell-tale signs of player exploration in the nether: 1-block-wide bridges of death. If you see any of those or torches etc. you know someone else has already been there and you must continue looking.

Who tests a texture pack in multiplayer, why not in creative where you can see what all the blocks and items look like.
I made my home on a mushroom island and I have not seen a single mob other than mooshrooms since I have been here. Apparently no mobs spawn on mushroom islands other than mooshrooms. Don't have to deal with creepers and shit, but no way to get xp and mob drops though.

Breed mooshrooms by the thousand and massacre them like it's them like its 1994 in Rwanda
It should give reasonable XP.
Or just mine around untill you hit a spawner
Or just make a grinder, considering it's the only surface for them to spawn, it sould produce insane numbers of mobs.
