Not for spawn directly, but if you can make it to something like 1.5k in certain direction I can pm you a location where you might find some stuff (where still ok last night).
XCC2's old place near spawn sometimes still has a new small farm, same with old 2k2k site (both are probably lava filled, but some still leave melon/wheat there when passing by) I haven't been to close to either for some time though.
As alternative you could first try a nether portal jump out. Go in the nether, go directly out through the same portal and look where you end up. If it's still to close, search for a nearby portal at either side and try again. Chances are not bad that you can jump like 1k/2k out with this.

You would need to put torches in the caves though, or do mobs not spawn there in mushroom biomes. (For oceans I know they do spawn in caves)

Not as much, i forget exactly how much, but you can breed a few hundred and that will let you level up if there are no alternatives.
and yes, if you build a grinder, light up caves to increase efficiency.

Nodus... Its a cheat thing, but just don't use any of the cheat mechanics of it, and it adds loads of usefull features

What just happened to the server?
Almost at 100k on the overworld, not got the resources to live in the nether so I'm walking (mostly swimming) on the overworld.
Every now and then I come across an ocean 5k+ long and I leave it to holding the spacebar down with my phone and a stack of pennies on the W key.
Progress is slow.

stop for a few days in the overworld and stock up on supplies, then make a tunnel under the top bedrock in the nether or just get on top of it.

and water kinda respawn it self so it harder to remove

I have a farm for wheat/melon
from spawn. Be lucky and find farm. Eat zombie meat. Use bonemeal on grassblocks to get grass, which in turn give seeds. Kill spiders, make fishing rod.
Do not run/jump to much while moving away, but do move away from spawn.
I haven't played Minecraft for a while, but since when does jumping into water kill you? I was at 25k in the nether when I went to the overworld. While I was mining out my portal I fucking fell off into a huge ocean and died. (The ocean was pretty deep, I definitely did not hit the bottom)

maybe you hit a surface squid, idk if you can get hurt from them but they break boats all the time.

dont eat rotten flesh because it fucks up your hunger, never sprint and avoid jumping unless you really need to. find enough wood to make a sword and a hoe, kill skeltons and get bonemeal to grow grass. use the seeds by some water and use the bonemeal to grow them. repeat this until you have enough bread to last you until you can get a proper farm.
it is totally ok to eat rotten flesh, just dont move until the effect disappears
