holy fuck i made the pope excommunicate sicily in less then 12 turns, now im blocking all their dumb ports.
I always make the Papalcy my bitch as Sicily. Converting Tunis from turn 1 usually makes you revered in no time.
Venice would really help my financial conquest of the Mediterranean. Hey Pope the Doge said your hat looks stupid. CRUSADE CALLED
I bought shogun 2 a while back and haven't touched it since the first week, it's too hard. Are there any good learning resources?
You can try messing around in skirmish battles to see what works and what doesn't.
I've done it when i started ntw and it helped me alot.
Man. I really want the long scope games back. Just the fact that Generals could die of old age and new ones would be born of their line. Gelder of the Saxons was the faction leader and he was constantly on the front. suddently, the previously eradicated faction of the Franks rebelled agains the settlement he was currently holding and attacked with 3 full stacks. It was 7800 versus 1200.
After 6 hours of intense fighting, Gelder was enraged by the loss of 600 men. 3500 Franks had fallen, but he had lost so many young. He raged: "SAXONS! GET BEHIND ME! NOT ONE MORE SAXON FALLS BEFORE I FALL!" So he sat himself in front, lured the enemy down a street, much like the spartans at the hot gates. The Franks revealed themselves as the rabble they were. They threw themselves down the street, all at once. 4500 Franks caught within an area of 90 by 15 metres. Gelder had anticipated this. His one unit of Cavalry was sent down another street to surround. After 30 minutes of holding them back, just as those in front were readying to rout, he signaled the riders. They forced the Frank force down the street, foot by foot, Line by Line they fell. Untill only their general remained. His head stood on a pike when it was over.
Gelder had his name put down in history and his sons aspired to be half as great. Many years later, his great grandson would live up to his name. He took down the Mongols and broke Rome.
Seriously. Lineage and legends that sprung about your generals was so awesome. Suddenly you comprehend why legends are made and how they evolve. Gelder did in fact fight in those numbers, but future generations kept lowering his troop count and increasing the Franks'.
I roleplay this too much. But yeah. Bring back a longer scope please.

Here's an old thread i once started about these kinds of insane battles. Most people just started posting lame "300 phalanxes vs 8k peasants" and other stupid stuff. I meant it more as a "fuck! i really managed to do this" thread, not a "i'm going to make sure i can do this" thread.
So true. My first campaign was with venice and I remember being instantly attacked by the byzantines. It did not go well.
How do you even survive as Venice anyways?
you have to grovel and beg for things as basic as map information.
The best i can think of is mass up troops and defend your southern border
or try to get alliances

I sometimes slip into bad European accents when I play M2:TW. Roleplaying these games is so much fun.

I tend to invent and roleplay the creation of folklore. That is to say, such a battle like Gelder's would become mythic legend and everyone in his line woul aspire to accomplish what the legends say he accomplished. What he accomplished in reality has long been lost to history. I tend to glorify what i do... if that makes sense. And not in the American "save the women and children" way, but in the Viking "he took an axe through the stomach, but just fought on in increased rage."
Much like that one Viking who held the bridge against the Saxon army a few months before the battle of Hastings in 1066. He was a fucking badass.
[editline]14th April 2012[/editline]
I also tend to pretend that i got my Troops strung out on shrooms. Vikings did this. Africa has legends of evil horned men with red beards who would take a spear through the stomach and just rip it back out and kill the offender while laughing.
They would die of course, but ignoring pain sure as shit makes you a dangerous contender.
My last 2 campaigns I've played as venice and invaded rome in the 7th turn

This playthrough I'm france and I already control scotland, england is surrounded by my people and their ridiculous accents
Anyone who has played Third Age have any tips for taking Minas Morgul as Gondor?
I've tried taking it but its so hard seeing as there is only one route into the castle.
Srry to ask, but what is third age?

Lord of the Rings mod for Medieval 2 Kingdoms.
It's probably THE best mod in any Total War game I have ever played.

It's probably one of the best mods in general, for any game. The amount of content is simply staggering. It's a better game than vanilla Medieval 2 by leaps and bounds (although Med2's ridiculous cheating AI rears it's ugly head in ways you never would've imagined.)
I was bored in Medieval 2, so I made a custom battle with 20 units of sherwood archers vs a single unit of highland rabble. After 2 volleys the rabble ran, all were cut down while fleeing except for a single man. I spent 5 minutes chasing him, every last arrow was fired and not a single one hit him.
Robin Hood: Total War. Could work!
1v1 naval battle in fots, I'm winning, the enemy is about to rout having spent the last 4 turns bombarding my damned city
they fire with their remaining 3 cannons, 2 miss, 1 goes straight into my engine and blows up my entire ship
NOT COOL MAN NOT COOL
How can they make Rome Total War 2, I mean the first game was from the beginning of the Republic to the Empire. Then the Barbarian Invasion expansion played the fall of Rome. If they just remake it, that'll be awesome too.
Hun invasion with the ..errr...(German) Völkerwanderung, the split into East and West Rome, rise of christianity, there is heaps.
Also Egypt is a very very interesting subject, the Nile could make a very interesting gameplay mechanic.

i allied HRE in my first turn then in turn 4-7 i allied hun's and the pope, as this is a early game i knew that north africa would be rebel states so i got one of my (somewhat small army) to take a town. i tried to ally sicily but they didn't want to so i asked the HRE to attack them with in turn made the relationship with sicily worse, two turn later they attacked one on my towns which the pope then ban hammer'd their arse from the church meanwhile the huns (well i think so) planning to attack my easten border so i need to get some men there asap.
playing H/VH
Robin Hood: Total War. Could work!
No it would suck. You shoot apples off people's heads all day long and rob some gold and give it to the poor.
That's Wilhelm Tell...
How do you even survive as Venice anyways?
Allying with the Papalcy will almost certainly guarantee survival. Allying with Byzantium(lol fuck history) is also a good move as long as you stay in Italy to avoid pissing them off. Someone attacks you, call a crusade on their capital and get free items + ancillaries + characters. Hell if you keep your favor with the pope high enough you can be the aggressor and still call crusades on your victim's cities. Don't piss off HRE or Sicily are good ideas aswell.

i find if you can get to Sicily quick you'll catch them with their pants down.
I always team up with Sicily. It's awesome holding off waves of Genoese Crossbowmen then suddenly a stack of Norman Knights and Muslim Archers appear outta nowhere.
in my game as Denmark I immediately allied with England and Scotland, using a marriage to seal the deal, and since then they have done precisely fuck all to help me against the HRE and Poland who are psychotically mad at me for some reason. we have been at war for roughly a billion years and yet they still refuse to ceasefire or talk to me :I
I just had this insane battle, I still can't believe my army won.

How? I find it impossible to wind against such odds in any of the games where you use guns/rifles. In Rome it was easy since you could just have high armor and beat them shitless, but never been able to attain a onesided win since Empire.

I didn't save the replay sadly, I'll just describe the battle. Since I was attacked by multiple armies coming from different direction I placed all my men on a hill, so I could easily protect my flanks and my men could fire over each other without friendly fire occurring. My artillery thinned out their armies before they could reach the hill. My light and line infantry shot everyone when they came too close of course and my I used my cav to protect my flanks.

Just bought Medieval II Total war and I'm loving it about to install the Third Age Mod, I went through the historical battle and I loved the England vs France battle but somehow lost against the Aztecs with the Spain vs Aztec battle :v: and the England vs Egypt battle against Saladin I didn't stand a chance and got completely demolished, jesus and the Saxons completely killed me with their shield wall as my archers didn't do that much of a dent as after I tried to charge the sides they all rushed at once and god damn I got demolished. I'm such a noob at the total war series and am horrible but it's fun.
Ooh, I just found a Roman Mod for Medieval 2: Kingdoms. It's pretty fun.

How the hell did the AI even raise such an army against you? I haven't seen such aggressiveness since my own Rome campaign. I've never seen such in either Empire, Napoleon or Shotgun. They always just fill half a stack and start attempting dumbshit sieges that you beat down.
