Med2's mercs were almost always amazing mid-late tier units but holy shit they cost a bomb. Knights usually costed 1500 on the spot.
Early in the game merc crossbowmen are godtier if you can afford them. Also wait for a crusade, you can get Unhorsed Knights and Merc Knights for like 200-300 florins a piece.

If I recall correctly mercenaries were a bitch to pay upkeep for otherwise. The lack of mercs in Shogun 2 makes me sad. I have no idea if that's historically accurate but I liked being able to beef up an army at the last minute if I encountered an extra large counter force. I hate how badly blockades affect my economy. I lose one port with a trade route going to it but it doesn't just rerouting the trade to a different port and I take a huge income penalty. By the way, am I the only one here who can't beat the AI when it's defending a fortress? Without fail I take massive casualties and I only succeed in taking the province if they have a tiny garrison, even if I manage to sabotage the gates open with a ninja. How do you folks take provinces? I'd especially appreciate your early game strategies for sieges.

Just in general I tend to take a really slow approach to sieges unless I have a army triple their size. Just allowing a siege weapon to empty it's ammo stocks before charging in usually helps a lot. When you do charge, charge with peasants first followed by samurai, it's usually better to have expendable troops establish a foothold inside their fort before sending in the shock troops. The samurai should be able to cut through the tired out defenders without much losses. Though the most important part would be spreading out the enemy forces, since you have to climb walls/ enter through chokepoints you are dead when his entire force is there. Split up your troops and assault every side of the castle, force him to spread his troops, then pierce one flank and when the other flanks fall back to reinforce strike them in the back with the other units.
Can't you do that to a degree in Shogun 2? I know what you mean though, I reckon it would be awesome to actually finance other clans and get them to fight other factions, and go into detail by actually setting objectives for them (eg take control of these provinces). I tried to emulate that a bit with my last Shogun 2 campaign by giving the Chosokabe 1,000 a turn for at least thirty turns at one certain point of the campaign. The result was that Chosokabe had the biggest fucking navy I'd ever seen and had naval dominance over more than half of Japan's coastline. Anyways, I was thinking about how feasible a "mercenary" mechanic would work in Total War games. Factions could offer their units for hire by other factions, and if another faction decided to adopt these mercenaries then they would be given full control over them (minus disbanding them), but of course they'd also have to pay for their up-keep and also provide a regular payment to the faction that the mercenaries belong to, as well as an initial fee as well probably. I guess it would be useful if you wanted to acquire an army fast but didn't want to wait for all the units to be trained. Also offers factions the opportunity to make quick money and temporarily reduce their expenditure (as the faction the mercenaries are sold to would then have to deal with the up-keep, of course).
I'm gonna try this. Was it considered not possible to make a missions mod? I have allies/vassals with 2 full stacks sitting in one province doing nothing. Would love to tell them to attack so and so.

Had to fight 2 Line Infantry vs 2 Cavallery as the automated battles always lost and it was crucial for a mission. Thank god I found a forest. Won.
Enemy boat shoots 1 cannonball at your port Shut down all the trade
Yeah, I hate that the port of your capital city is so important. And I don't think clans were that centralized, especially during a period of territorial expansion.
Enemy boat shoots 1 cannonball at your port Shut down all the trade
And coastal gun batteries do fuck all to protect the port when a navy can sit on the outskirts of their range and still bomb you. Shit is extremely frustrating
I just build one trading port (Usually at my capital, or covered by another nearby port) Everywhere else I make dockyards with level 3 defences. They manage to scare away most enemy armies and navies.
England didn't expect the elephants. :downs:
Elephants are absolute mad cunts! I remember back in Empire I was playing online with two friends and some random on the internet, two versus two. I was playing the Ottoman Empire, my friend on my side was Maratha, friend on the other side was Great Britain and the random was Sweden. Battle was (for me) smooth for the most part, the random person refused to move his units away from the hill he was on, so desperate to at least provoke the random to assist my friend on the other side attacked both me and my ally. I had hidden ranged units at the front of my lines and absolutely dominated the enemy approach (and ended up counterattacking, eliminating his whole army). However my ally did lose quite a bit in the battle. So anyways we turned our attention to Sweden. Sweden started to move around a bit, but sadly they remained out of range of my organ guns. Friend and myself went in for the attack but my friend's weakened units suffered terribly under the shots of the Swedish guard units, so much that only his elephant general was left. I attacked as well but pulled back when I realised it was a loosing battle for me. Got myself in a good position and was ready to do a new attack, and plan with friend on how to do it. Instead he just fucking ignores me and over chat (we had Skype in background) he just yells "CHARGE!!!" and sends his elephant general straight into the muskets of the guards. Got it was fucking funny how bad it failed. Doesn't sound as funny written down but it was at the time. We ended up loosing that battle as my plan of attack didn't work really well. Good battle though.
Wish I had a proper internet connection, I'd actually play some online battles. AI can be a tad boring.
My biggest issue with FotS is that I can't do my turtle walk when it comes to war. In Empire, I would just flesh out my economy and then buy a bunch of troops. In FotS, there's little to no time to do so until you've captured plenty of regions. [editline]27th April 2012[/editline] And most of my battles- Me- Deployed: 500 Lost: 3 Enemy- Deploted: 1000 Lost: 879 Stupid AI is stupid
I really hate how recruiting generals in FOTS reduces the loyalty of others. I really wish they would flesh out ETW with more features from FOTS. (Like galleys that ram, coastal defences/sieges/battles, upgradeable fort towers that can be captured, a skill tree for agents/generals, speciality buildings, replenishment for units, etc.)
Who recruits generals anyway? Just capture them from the enemy. I ended up with way to many generals.

Did a battle with an army of roughly 1500 versus an AI army of 2000 (with two supporting armies giving them a total of 4000) and I ended up destroying 2500 of their units and sending the rest fleeing, while only losing 200 myself. Sure, I had only Samurai and they had mostly Ashigaru and I was playing on normal, but surely the AI could do a bit better?
How well does Napoleon run compared to Shogun 2? I can run Shogun's campaign map and battles decently with the lowest settings. I'm deciding whether to delete M2TW or not to give space for it, but I'm afraid that it would run terribly, leaving me without both games.
Who recruits generals anyway? Just capture them from the enemy. I ended up with way to many generals.
In Med2 I always wound up with generals up to my ears, so I would use them to block bridges so enemy agents couldn't cross.

started making Videos for Napoleon total war. Thinking about doing the rest of the series at a later date. sorry about the shitty quality. I have no Idea what is up with it but It looked way better when I was playing it in VLC. enjoy. That position is so easy to break with skirmishers.
Wow so much artillery. That position is so easy to break with skirmishers.
I have some sort of love for Arty. games like Shogun 2 I have to have around 4 Armstrong guns and 2 gattling guns just to Satisfy my needs. I just cant have an army without artillery for some reason...
I like to use as few as possible artillery pieces. Especially in ntw this was very doable because of the fast horse artillery. I don't like fots artillery much because it's so powerful. I sometimes end up sacrificing 1 or 2 units so that they run out of ammo.
I think that Fall of the Samurai is just far too easy on normal, and the game just gets stupid when you go up to hard difficulty because the AI cheats. And standard Shogun 2 is a bit silly too, the Ikko Ikki have like 15 provinces and are right next to Kyoto 25 or so turns into the game. If they wanted to they could take Kyoto. I noticed there were 3 cities with just a single unit for garrison so I took 2 and then a full stack appeared out of nowhere and all I had was a half stack of just Ashigaru. It took them just two turns to take back the cities.
I like the battles in Fall of the Samurai so far but I hate how ridiculously low income tends to be versus how expensive everything else is. I'm playing my first campaign as the Tosa because I learned the huge wigs they wear are made from bear fur which sounded really badass. What was actually up with those?

Someone managed to add bayonets for FOTS units: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=538081
