Is there a mod that allows me to use the Lionheart like in vanilla but with improved...everything?
edit: for M2
Can anyone confirm if that mod makes the eye-burningly bright UI any better?
Is Roma Surrectum II as overwhelming as Europa Barbarium? I couldn't get into that mod because I had no idea what my units did.
Their whateverthefuck Raiders are sick. They are super cheap and with the 2nd Welsh-only archer unit you can rape England. If you want hard play as Scotland VH/VH. Having to balance between dealing with the WE MUST UNIFY THE ISLAND Brits and the Norse hordes that land every 5 turns to stomp your shit is fucking challenging. You think you'd be safe when Mel Gibson shows up but he's just a captain of a 60 man 2h highlander stack.
I haven't even bothered to attack Scotland yet, I made a nice alliance with them and for some reason the Nords have not even bothered to attack me throughout my campaign, though I think its because I have my fleets near them.

This post is brilliant.

The Norse will leave you all alone unless you are Scotland. Scotland gets fucked in the Britannia campaign. Everyone gets a more in depth unit roster except Scotland who keeps the same exact shit from vanilla. You'll be busy fighting off the Brits using axes and spears when all of a sudden the King of Denmark decides to personally visit your capital with 5 dragon boats, 15 longboats, and 2500 chainmail wearin motherfuckers. Your only hope of survival is when Mel Gibson spawns to save you. Then all hope is lost when 2 turns later he dies from archers cause he has shit tier armor and no horse.

Sounds perfectly accurate historicly wise.
For fuck sake. Just spent 40 minutes in a battle against an enemy army in India that was going around and raiding all my towns, being a general pain in the ass (he was besieging Mysore the round before but left when I defeated a nearby army) and was a threat to my heavily undefended city Cartanica *story of Cartanica will be posted below. He had roughly 645 men in the army (5 line infantry units, 1 camel unit and 1 fixed artillery unit) against my roughly 1000 men (a bunch of line infantry, 2 militia, 2 pikemen and 2 cavalry units and my general). I decided not to do auto-resolve as the AI generally does very poorly unless my army far outnumbers the enemy army AND the enemy army doesn't have artillery (god damn AI, if I auto-resolve when the enemy army has artillery, I usually find that I've lost so many men from walking into grape shot, seriously retarded. Cavalry units lost 30/45 riders and line infantry lose around 60 men out of 120, it's pathetic. It's so easy to flank artillery with cavalry and take the cannons with minimal losses). So I decide to play this battle myself and completely and utterly DESTROY this army, leaving nothing to escape. I was severely pissed off at having enemy armies run off with a few hundred remaining men and still be a pain in the ass, add this to the fact that I had a 6 star Indian general about 2-turns distance away that I didn't want the routers to join, so it made annihilation a priority.
Get in the game, assemble my men. Indians grab a hill, can't be helped seeing as they were closest to it. Line infantry exchange fire, I send one of my cavalry unit over to the right flight and behind their army to wipe out the potential threat of the artillery, and the other cavalry unit over my left flank and behind the enemy army to wait to engage when my line infantry start close combat. After 3 or so volleys, I order my men to start close combat, I order my cavalry to charge their exposed rears and I kill most of them, with a bunch of enemies routing. Once the majority of the army is routing, I send my general and one cavalry unit to wipe out their camel unit general, I succeed despite the fact that camels spook horses. I use my cavalry units and the general to mop up the routing men until the map is all but clear of just one unit of resisting line infantry. JUST as I engage them, my game crashes.
So I spent 45 minutes basically acing a battle, only to crash at the last two minutes of battle. There goes my 0 remaining enemy battle, and I really can't be arsed to do it again, but I'll have to...

Story of Cartanica

I sent 3 units of line infantry the round after I'd conquered Mysore (the first enemy settlement I captured in India) due to it being heavily undefended (it only had one unit of enemy line infantry). I figured with all the enemy armies in the vicinity, I'd be a fool not to capture the city for a few rounds of gold income before the enemy armies occupied Cartanica and made it nigh impossible to siege (plus 1.8k for 2 rounds was a fair deal for 3 line infantry). I couldn't send reinforcements or a larger occupying force to defend Cartanica as Mysore was at risk of revolting, so I needed all the men there to stop that, as well as to replenish their diminished numbers from the siege of Mysore.
Anyways, my 3 diminished line infantry units successfully held off 4 sieges of about 450 enemy soldiers over the course of two rounds. They want from green recruits to 4 star veterans. The latest siege against Cartanica was held off by a unit of 67 line infantry (4 star ranked veterans) plus two 60-man units of armed citizenry against 400 enemy soldiers.
Those brave veterans bought me time to recruit a fresh set of line infantry in Cartanica, and I just sent a general over there to better my defense of the city. My veterans are going to be replenished next turn and due to the outstanding bravery of the initial 3 units of line infantry, I now have a strong foothold in Cartanica, with fresh units being recruited, a veteran unit being replenished and an enlisted general to command the men.
Cartanica won't be lost easily, however I fear for it's safety. The 5 star enemy general is two turns away from the city so I don't know if I'll have enough men to defend against the imminent siege. I can only hope the veteran unit of line infantry will be the winning factor. As soon as the risk of capture of Cartanica is diminished, I'm sending the veteran unit to my main offensive army in India, in the hope that they make the conquest of India a little bit easier. They will be adorned with honour and lavished with praise.

"Oh god, oh god, oh god, oh god."
the best part is that the fucker managed to get away, my troops were tired juuust enough that they couldn't get to him. That fucker had so many dogs snapping at his ankles. I hope he's still alive and was given a promotion for being able to outrun an entire fucking army.
Also, I guess the little medals in the unit cards mean prestige and quality, but what about the swords?

In Rome: Total War, the medals mean the units veterancy, AKA the units experience in combat which generally relates to increased stats (harder to make the unit retreat, the unit has a higher attack, defence, etc etc). The sword relates to the units offensive weapon quality. Bronze, silver and gold respectively increase the units offense stats, bronze being the lowest increase (but better than the "ordinary" unit without a bronze weapon), and gold being the highest increase. Lastly is the shield symbol. The shield symbol is an indicator of the units armour (or defense) stat. Bronze, silver and gold are again the rating. A unit with bronze armour symbol will have a better defense than a unit without bronze.
Hope that helps :) The symbols stumped me for the longest time in R:TW, until I played with my friend and realized that the units with the symbols performed better.
[editline]6th July 2012[/editline]
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the stripes / medal thingies relate to the units morale boost, sword is the units offense boost and shield is the units defense boost. I'm not entirely sure if the stripes / medal thingies boost all respective qualities, or just moral.
In Empire: Total War, the stripes boost all stats.
oh, I see. Thanks. I guess the ones that have the swords are the ones build built in my cities with blacksmiths and armories. Also, another thing, are the military wages paid in cities? because I have a city with good farming and trading, happy, high tax and still earning me -300 gold
I was going to record a replay for M:TW2, but that fucking launcher kept popping up and ruining it and even when I fixed that, Steam just crashes it anyways.
Thanks a lot, Steam.

I've had that problem before. You gotta rename the medieval/kingdoms.exe to launcher.exe and it should bypass it all together.
How many of you are using Roma Surrectum II for Rome: Total War?
For those who haven't heard of it, here's a snapshot.
You can get it here.
You know I want to get Rome, and that mod looks great, but I can't stand the engine limiting me to, like, 4000 men because it can't comprehend multiple cores. I wish there was some kind of work-around for that, because I'd love to fight a battle of 10,000 men in Rome or Medieval II.

Also, I'm pretty sure someone's killing my family members. Do I need a spy to see if there's an assassin near me?
So I've been playing EB.
"EquiTEs CaeTRATII!"
"PrinciPEs."
"Elephantes HULAIOI LiboukoI"
Whoever did the voice acting is my favorite person ever.

If they fail a mission you have a chance that they'll be revealed assuming they don't get executed and escape. And yes having a spy will increase your chance of uncovering enemy agents and give you a bonus against assassinations. I had a problem with my cardinals mysteriously dying in Cordoba with about 3 imams camping outside the settlement. I trained a spy and next turn 2 Moorish assassins appeared.
seeing that rome II trailer has made me reinstall the original. it's so fucking great
also looking for a great mod any suggestions

Adds a hundred million different named Legions for Rome that are pretty much all the same.
Actually adds variety for other factions though.
Beware, will rape your computer.

I prefer EB. Because having that many legions sounds great, I'm sure it gets confusing. Hell in EB I get Eluetheroi and Ptolomai mixed up with Kathdastim and Lusotannan.
But other than the names everything is great.
I think the highest amount of troops I can get in a battle without lag is 10,000 in Medieval II.
However, it lags up close unless I turn off anti-aliasing. If I turned down my settings (they are at the highest possible) I could probably run battles at proper historical size (IE 60,000 men and shit)
While on the subject of battle size, is there any way to easily change the size of a unit?

Go to options and it's something like Unit Scale, higher = more men in a given unit.

Wow okay are you using H.A.L. or something? Your computer must be insane. I can close-to max out Shogun 2 and have ~8000 soldiers on the field without any lag but anything over ~4000 in Medieval II, at any graphics level, is a total crapshoot.
Just after destroying some level 9 cocky bastard who wouldn't shut up on the chat about how bad I was on my very first online game of Fall of the Samurai. Feels good.
I despise the Portuguese, everything was going so well and then they decided to make me fight on two fronts.

I mean bigger than that.
I would have ti modify the games files because they are already set to huge.

"Everything was going so well" sums up diplomacy in TW for me.
Wow, Cartanica is fucking incredible. I've wrested control of the southern section of India, as well as repelling all the enemy armies. I've had enough time to replenish my troops as well as recruit new infantry units. The Maratha Confederacy is on the defensive now, due to having only 4 cities left and a completely decimated army. I have a good few turns to take my time in wiping them out city by city. The Maratha Confederacy was seriously stupid, they kept sending small armies of about ~400 men to try and take Cartanica, rather than just waiting a few turns and amassing an entire army to take the city. It wasn't easy repelling the 400 man armies, but it gave me a chance to recruit new units, as well as send a few units from Mysore to reinforce Cartanica. The Maratha Confederacy has suffered defeat after humiliating defeat which has sent them reeling and I'm glad to say they're on rocking on their heels from the blow I've given them. Got 3 4-5 star veteran units out of the sieges of Cartanica!
I plan on taking out the Maratha Confederacy and then keeping on good terms with The Mughal Empire (I have no idea how we're at peace, seeing as I took Mysore from them at the start). Once I've annihilated the Maratha Confederacy, I can withdraw some of my veteran troops out of India (not all, but most) and send them to America or back to England, where a new threat has emerged. I'd leave an occupying force in India to maintain peace, or put down revolts or - if it comes to it - defend against war from the Mughal Empire (AI diplomacy is so fickle).
Spain decided to shit all over me and declared war out of the blue. I'm lucky he didn't call in his allies. France has a superior navy to me (times have been tough, I haven't had that much income coming in due to fighting in two separate continents). Spain made a huge mistake by sending a ship (just ONE) full of approximately ~1800 men. My Navy is strong in America so I captured the ship which instantly killed the army, rather pathetic of Spain. I am now in the process of attacking Spanish regions in The Americas, progress is slow but steady.
I'm mainly concerned about Europe though, seeing as Spain's Navy is a strong presence in the area, as well as having many allies ready to assist them at any moment. France currently has an incredibly strong navy sitting in port in Calais (or whatever that region is, the one right opposite Britain), so I'm rather nervous. I'm going to blockade Portugal which Spain recently captured, to hopefully gain a little bit more income as well as preventing the Spanish from increasing their navy.
No idea how I'll handle this situation. Conquest of America has been put on hold, I'm on the defensive. Got a good army defending a little settlement - against both the Spanish (who are unlikely to do anything due to their lack of manpower) and the Cherokee tribes - whilst two units of line infantry are being transported by my navy from Spanish colony to Spanish colony, slowly taking over each region.
The worst has passed, I'm happy to say, but things can still drastically change. I've got to up my manpower in Europe, seeing as Britain is heavily undefended and an enemy force could land at any moment. Other than that, mostly everything is under my control. United Nations has been an absolutely great ally through all this, helping kill the occasional pirate raiders, or Spanish raiders.
The future looks promising for Britain!
Playing as italian states, used a mod that unlocks them.
Capture all the regions to the north, make fuckbuttloads of money, buy the boot part. Everything is swell and happy, and then I side with the rebels and change to a republic.
Now everyone wants to stick their dick in my butt.
