gamerman345, that's impressive, but the AI is notoriously retarded when it comes to anything battle-related haha I've been playing on Hard, and the AI sucks balls.
If I were playing as Britain, I wouldn't have sat on the walls whilst you had 4 batteries of Howitzers firing on me. My line infantry outnumbered yours - as you said - 5:1, and I take it Britain also had one or two units of Cavalry? I would have marched my troops out of the walls, seeing as that's a better chance of victory than being sitting ducks for you to blow up. I'm sure if the AI had confronted you in battle, you would have been defeated.

By the way, that post comes across as assholish. I don't mean for it to be. That was a damn good read, and the pictures were great! Plus, I'm only commenting on this as I myself have witnessed the retardation that is AI. I won against 5 sieges of ~400 men with only two units of line infantry, when in reality I should have lost that fort on the first - maybe second - siege.

Bearing in mind they were mostly militia/citizenry, it might have been possible to beat them if I got lucky with shock attacks to try and send them running. My tactics would have been to sit on a hill, use explosive shells to knock holes in militia and citizenry, flank with the Cuirassers and rout a flank of regiments and then quickly smash into the body of the remaining enemy forces with my own Line Infantry and hope they break. It would certainly be a hard fought battle.
If my memory serves me correct I had similar scenario's on the eastern front where it came down to a land battle where I was vastly outnumbered. Persia had 3 full stacks of men in Azzerbijian and 70% of each stack was 375 man Qizilbashi Musketeers with melee attack 11 and morale 8. I managed to crush Persia eventually after wiping out each stack individually, and then starving the defenders of the city in Azzerbjian. They came out and I blasted them with explosive shells. I was outnumbered either 2-1 or 3-1, and by the time the battle was over half of my Line Infantry were out of ammo. Ill post some screenshots soon about that front as well.
this was my first time fighting ents i figured i had a big enough army to take down a few trees

otherwise this game owns i pretty much bought medieval 2 just for third age tho ive played it before and crusades is my fav "expansion"
I keep failing Third Age. Everytime I play as Gondor I get raped, somehow surviving but not able to do anything offensive and everytime I play as another good faction I do well but everyone else gets raped by Mordor.
Is it possible to get two allies to go to war with one another on ETW? I'm playing as Britain and about 130 turns in, Prussia has taken a large portion of Europe, but they stopped at the French border because of their alliance. I made an alliance with Prussia and attacked France (made peace with them some years back after taking most of their holdings in America), hoping Prussia would join me, but they always side with France.
It would be great if Prussia were at war with my two biggest enemies, France and Spain (they're already at war with Spain). My thinking is that if Prussia were fighting France/Spain in Europe, there would be less chance of the two sending armies to try and retake their colonies in the Americas. Of course the AI is always doing stupid things, so it may happen anyway, but at least it'd be neat to see Prussia in control of Europe.

Thats ironic
Rome: Total War made my hand-me-down 11-year old computer explode. I'm too scared to play it now.
Is there a "frodo destroys the ring" event and all the Orc armies suck balls?
Hot damn I didn't know E:TW had first person mode. I thought they added that in TW:S2

Ya it's cool but it's very basic unlike Shogun's. You can't manually aim canons or look around. You can also use the mouse wheel in fpmode to scroll between units in a regiment.

Is that first person in the body of a guy? If so is this man like 10 foot tall?
Well, I played Medieval II and I wanted to see if the Timurid War Elephants were as OP as the Mamluks in TATW.

I don't think this is in Napoleon, is it.
I am very sad.
Is that first person in the body of a guy? If so is this man like 10 foot tall?
Nah, he's in a regiment about 15 feet behind the front line and up on a small hillside
Hey guys, in Rome if I assassinate an entire faction's family, what happens?
Hey guys, in Rome if I assassinate an entire faction's family, what happens?
I presume its the same as Medieval 2 where the faction crumbles and every city is taken over by rebels automatically.
So there is no fix for Steam mods?
So there is no fix for Steam mods?
I have had no issue myself, I just used that kingdoms custom launcher dealie that allows you to add entries and it works just fine, I have steam.

I thought they just respawned, that was what happened when I tried it any way.

Huh, weird.
Time for me to re-install again.

I love how nonchalant that guy on the right looks, it's like he's thinking "When are they gonna let us back into the barracks, no one's out there, it's obviously a false alarm..."
man Guerrilla Mercenaries are so overpowered.

After I occupied Naples, Spain decided to pay SW Greece a visit with 4 regiments of horse, 3 line regiments, and 3 Western European Mercenaries. The WE mercs alone will wipe the floor of virtually any other line infantry available pre-1715. All I had were 6 guerrilla regiments, 2 militia, 1 conscript, and 3 flintlock mobs. I decided I would back myself into a corner and kill as many Spanish possible then recapture Greece with a mixture of Marines and WE mercs I had en route from Venice. Then I saw guerrillas have the ability to place stakes at will. So I created a diamond shaped defense with stakes to my front and the border on my rear. When Spain finally made their way to my death trap I had to bait them into attacking by throwing 2 flintlock mobs at them. As soon as the cavalry took the bait I retreated behind my stakes and watched 1 regiment of horse die instantly. In typical TW ai fashion the rest of the army began to attack. Even with the horses out of the equation I still wasn't confident in coming out ontop as the victor. His line infantry and mercs would make short work of my flintlock mobs and militia, and in the long run would probably waver my guerillas. But suddenly after the Spanish finished their first salvo the AI went full retard and decided to charge into melee. At first I panicked as 600 mercs started to charge right through the flintlock mob, into the militia, and looked as if they would pierce straight to my general. After about 30 seconds all his flags started to flash as his bayonet charge failed horribly. All in all I lost about 300/1100 men(mostly flintlock mob) to his 1400/1490. Irregulars are the fuckin shit
Does anybody know how to unlock factions for the Medieval 2 Custom Battle mode?
The only help I could find was for Rome and the file described isn't in the Medieval II files (probably packed but I cannot find a working unpacker)

Unlock all factions
Find this directory:
Medieval II Total War\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign
Then find the file descr_strat. Open it with a text editor (Word, or somthing like that). Cut and Paste the 'unlockable' section into the 'playable' section and save the file. Launch the game and you should have every faction available.
You can also unlock the Papal Estates, but not the Mongols, Timurids and The Aztecs.
Remember to make BACKUPS before you are editing the game files!!!!
I'm not sure if that will unlock them for custom battle too but i do think so. If not you should probably look for a line in the .ini with /custombattle/ in it.
Gotta love taking advantage of the AI in Empire when you're hopelessly outnumbered at least 5 to 1.
Sieges are so bad on the game's AI that it's quite easy to hold out against a vast superior force if you just funnel them into a killzone in the middle of the fort. Anyway, I loved how ridiculous these Cuirassiers were. I killed about 100+ (I play with Ultra unit sizes) as they ran into the stakes 1 by 1 while funneling in from the front gate. Not a single shot was fired and they were my worst fear during the siege.
I scaled the images down for easier viewing:

I never understood why the AI could have a relatively superior force and they wreck their opportunity by doing just that. Sometimes it's disorienting and can literally break a line in half but the moment you recover (which is usually quite easy) you'll wreck their forces by engulfing them with a pincer move on their flanks and just lay waste to them. Stupid charging moves like that can make the game a little boring at times.

But that's for the campaign, I want to unlock some factions in custom battle mode.
The file for adding them to custom battle is "descr_sm_factions" but I believe it's packed. However, it is already unpacked in Rome: Total War.
My body is so damn ready.
