God damn, I bought Shogun 2 ages ago but just got around to installing it (at home for the summer, hooray for my gaming rig!). I fucking LOVE this. I've been playing Empire: Total War a lot lately and it was getting stale, and Shogun 2 is exactly what I wanted. I don't care much that there isn't much unit variety, because for me it's enough having the units the game provides. I love the feel of Japan and I love marching across the land with my veteran samurai warriors. Generals in this game are so much more awesome as well. I've leveled up a general of mine who accompanies my Daimyo everywhere he goes (in a seperate army that follows the Daimyo's main army). The general basically racks up experience whilst still being there to protect the Daimyo. I've leveled him up to have high morale, high defense and high attack. I basically send him in once my soldiers engage the enemy, sending him in to flank the enemy army. He wreaks havoc! He literally cuts great swathes in the enemy army and is practically invincible. He won me a siege that I would have otherwise lost. Sent him up to the walls and ordered him to dismount, he climbed the walls as if possessed by a demon and let hell loose on the enemy defenders. Inspired a nearby samurai unit and rallied the nearby men. Won that siege when it would have otherwise been lost. I fucking love this guy. He's the Daimyo's brother and I'm going to keep on leveling him up to be an insanely powerful general. My Daimyo - currently - is just specializing in strategy. I don't dare risk sending my Daimyo into the fray unless it's a guarantee that he is in no harm of dying. Good for providing a quick XP boost when I send him into a losing unit. All-in-all, I'm really enjoying Shogun 2. It's a completely different feel to Empire: TW and I love the sieges and agents and generals.
I still love sending Ashigaru units into suicide charges while my US Marines sit back and fire into melee while ironclads provide naval bombardments. ~Pyrrhic victories errday~
Nothing's more fun than having two ships race by, on either side of the enemy, and unleashing a salvo Except maybe Overkill
Is that vanilla M2?
Retrofit mod with Grand Unit Addon Mod
So I just bought Rome and the expansion Alexander while they were on sale. Anything I should know?
Just read some stuff about roman tactics. It's quite easy.
I would recommend the Roma Surrectum II or Europa Barbarorum mod after you've finished your first campaign, they add a lot to the game.
Layered shapes with two ranks and archers in the center and cavalry off to the distance is a good defensive strategy against barbarians
I usually engage with some of my Hastai and then flank and charge with my Equities and route their whole army.
Crash every second turn on Shogun 2. :why:
Well, disappointingly I have to end my French game at the year 1758 because it just keeps crashing at the end of the turn. Great Britain has been eradicated, Pirates showed up again and Austria and I are duking it out constantly through Europe. I was sending out a full stacked expedition to India and took Ceylon (sp?) which was being run by a bunch of "Kandy Rebels" (was once part of the Dutch at one point in the game but I eliminated the dutch quickly, early on) and I was preparing to declare war on both India and the Ottoman Empire to continue to my conquest. Not sure why the crash is happening though...I hope it's not permanent.
Hah bought Shogun 2 yesterday for £30, today its £7. Oh well. Cracking game.
My biggest and worst gripe with Shogun 2 is that the loading times are horrendous for me. Im used to how it takes less than a minute to load in R:TW most of the time, and around 1 and a half in Empire, but in Shogun Its not unusual to wait 2-3 minutes at the start and end of a battle. It takes 15 minutes to get past the loading screen before the game even gets to the menu too. I was going to play it yesterday but by the time I had gotten to the load campaign save screen I was fed up and I went to play Empire.
I don't know what it is about Shogun for me, I just can't enjoy playing it. Same with Empire and Napoleon. Something about the graphics I guess, I can play RTW and Medieval 2 forever.

Got Shogun 2 from the internet and bought it first thing when it was on sale.

Its a shame Roma Surrectum 2 is more taxing on my computer than Third Age: Total War.
Its a shame Roma Surrectum 2 is more taxing on my computer than Third Age: Total War.
I had to turn some settings down to not play Rome Total Powerpoint
Pissed right now, My closest ally just declared war on me, and they are the Austrians Got Darthmod, started a game as the kingdom of Saxony, me along with Austria and Prussia started to gradually help eachother take over the various french towns and cities all the way to Paris. after we took paris, Austria declares war on me, Funnily enough I have a bigger nation then them surprisingly. this is going to be pretty interesting...
Its a shame Roma Surrectum 2 is more taxing on my computer than Third Age: Total War.
Game was made almost a decade ago and obviously not optimized for multiple cores. I hate it as well.
We must wait for Rome II. Its only a year, right? I'm gonna have a fucking blast with the beach invasions. Gonna start as Britannia and invade Gaul, D-Day style.
I'd love to unleash a 61 gun salvo on a tiny boat, but the fucking Ottomans do this and make turn times take 20 minutes, instead of the normal 25-30 seconds
Turn off the show AI movement.
Well, I tried Rome. I liked some aspects better than Medieval II. It was faster and infantry had a far more important role. However, the game is un-optimized to shit and I generally found the combat to be more, well, boring than Medieval II.
Turn off the show AI movement.
.... No. That's not what I'm talking about. The Ottomans have SO MANY units, it locks the game up when they negotiate, or take their turn. It doesn't crash, it just locks up until their turn is processed. Show AI turns I keep turned off anyway and having people suggest that so much is condescending

I played about an hour of shogun 2 this morning then played Roma Surrectum 2 for the rest of the day, go figure.
Is Fall of the Samurai worth it? I have Shogun 2 and I love both campaign and multiplayer, but everyone plays FotS these days, since its on sale I thought I would ask.

"alright i finally got a bunch of good troops and this castle-town is nice and surrounded-OUR UNITS OURU RUNNING FROMU THE BATTER! THIS ISU A SHAAAAMEFUR DISPRAY" shogun 2 in a nutshell
