Yes. I think Total War gives you a sort of different insight into history that no class can really achieve. Obviously it won't teach you what happened, but it becomes easier to understand why things happened.
Total War is the reason I wanted to learn about Roman and Medieval History, now I know a ton and have a ton of Roman history books on my bookcase.
France decided to conquer Savoy(they always do) at the same time I finally conquered Genoa and kicked them off the Italian mainland. I'm thinking hell ya, I've got France(Very Friendly) to my west, Venice(Ally+Very Friendly) to my east and Spain(Very Friendly) to the south&north. Venice and France somehow are at war with each other but regardless we are a fellowship of bros. Plus we are all raking in hella gold from trading with each other. The next turn after my triumph France declares war on me, fml. I try and try and try to appease them in an attempt to broker a peace treaty but all my negotiations fail. I had a stroke of genius. Dutch Guyana wasn't pulling in any income anymore from constant pirate blockades and I can't spam Indiaman ships into Africa from her ports, so I give DG to the French. Problem solved and we restore peace plus we renegotiate our trade agreement. Now that I have a 2nd port but I'm still hellbent on establishing trade operations in the Caribbean, I've begun to field a fleet of Privateers to combat the pirate threat. I've got the United Provinces final Caribbean territory, Trinidad & Tobago, and Antigua in my sights.
I wouldn't be so willing to trust France and Venice. Knowing the AI, those relations wont last long.
Total War is the reason I wanted to learn about Roman and Medieval History, now I know a ton and have a ton of Roman history books on my bookcase.
And then you notice all the historical inaccuracies in Rome total war and it drives you crazy.
I wouldn't be so willing to trust France and Venice. Knowing the AI, those relations wont last long.
Venice are my goto bros in the TW series. In MTW2 I always kept a strong Sicilian-Venetian-HRE Italy. If you ally with Venice in ETW from turn 1 they'll never betray you especially once they go into Ottoman decimation mode. The super power nations however will betray/cancel trade the fuck out of you for no reason. I don't think diplomacy really works how it should for the nonplayable nations cause when I play as Prussia or Austria nations line up to kiss ass.
I can't trust any AI unless they're on the other side of the world and can only survive through my assistance. And even then, usually they are my vassals or protectorates or whatever. Otherwise I'm always keeping half my army on my border with my ally to make sure he doesn't fucking sack my capital while I'm away Crusading or something.
I have been playing Napoleon total war with Darthmod, as Denmark. I ended in a big battle with Prussia, 3 prussian armies with over 13000 troopes, against mine almost 4000, In a castle defense, and insted of defending my castle I wanted go out with a bang. They are in random order. What I do sometimes, is just go into Custom battles/Play battles, and make up a storyline in my head. I.E, one of my ideas was a Russian invasion of Austria. I started with two full armies on both sides, and I would reduce my Russian army every time I won a battle. I'd do battles, then a siege or two, then more battles. I ended my "campaign" with a final fight between line infantry and Siberian Hunters.

I even use Civ 5 World Generators to design the map. Sometimes, when I play a serious game of Civ 5, I will re-enact the battles in Total War. Same thing when playing the Paradox Interactive sims, where I try and make the battles full size (Mostly impossible with the current engines. Most of my battles are larger than 60,000 men)
Can't wait for this mod. http://www.twcenter.net/wiki/Princes,_Kings_and_Heroes Crusader kings type mod for Medieval 2 that focuses on the warfare between English houses and such.

Playing Empire Total War as France, so Britain is harassing my colonies. Took over London in retaliation.
Playing Empire Total War as France, so Britain is harassing my colonies. Took over London in retaliation.
Every turn they'll ask for London back in exchange for Jamaica + pay them 8k :v:
It turns out if you break 5 ceasefires in quick succession people stop trusting you. ffffuck guys I mean this one
Every turn they'll ask for London back in exchange for Jamaica + pay them 8k :v:
This really annoys me. I was doing a Britain campaign and for about 10 years Russia kept wanting me to trade Boston for one of its shitty provinces way out on its eastern border. I ended up declaring war on them to get them to stop.
well it turns out I didn't have enough troops in paris during the revouluation but 4 sets of line men were coming next turn. the rebels got to it first, and I only had milita there. time to replay that again when I get home
I am playing M2:TW:K's Britannia Campaign as Ireland, seeing as how I had neglected it before. Ive been addicted to it since I started, Ive already taken over Ireland, what used to be Norway's little string of islands and I have made landfall in northern Scotland, where they have jackshit defending their settlements while William Wallace beats the shit out of England down below. The Barons Alliance took London and Wales has a 9 Command 8 Authority Star King with 0 management, which is probably why he was busy beating the shit out of an English army too when my spies saw him, rather than sitting in a castle. Currently researching Gunpowder weapons so I can get Calivermen.
Britannia just dumped a full-stack army in rome. Since there's no british ships near-by, I assume it was by land. And now it's just chilling there, without attacking. What the fuck, britannia.
Darth just retired from total war modding after not receiving an invite to CA's modder summit:
20/09/2012 This is unfortunately a sad announcement . For the reasons explained in these two posts http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?p=12025938#post12025938 http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?p=12026734#post12026734 the DarthMod project will no longer continue for Total War games. There will be some support for older games, if needed, as all my mods are complete now but there will be not a new DarthMod for new Total War games and of course not for the upcoming RTW2. I believe this is what CA also wanted for years, so I think they are happy now. I am one of the biggest fans of Total War games, I do not think someone can deny this, but as CA continued to devalue my efforts to improve their games, I would be a fool to "insist". Do not worry about the future of the current DarthMods. They will stay and will be probably somewhat more improved. Maybe now I will have more time to play them...
https://www.facebook.com/DarthMod/posts/146924002116188?notif_t=feed_comment
I understand why he's doing that. But he just seems like the biggest cry baby for completely quitting modding to any new games because he didn't get invited to a small event. [editline]22nd September 2012[/editline] You devote years of your life to something, and just stop over something like a hosted event.
From reading the thread it appears the people they invited made modding tools, rather than just mods. Darth is throwing a temper tantrum. He doesn't get his way so he takes his ball and goes home.

[editline]22nd September 2012[/editline] You devote years of your life to something, and just stop over something like a hosted event.
It wasn't just the event, at first he was considering stopping due to not getting invited, then a CA employee indirectly replied with:
There are some mods out there that claim to do things that are impossible to do within the limitations that exist at the moment, for example.
which darth took offense to, so he stopped
Again, it's childish. Oh wahhhh, a community leader indirectly referenced what could be me and 20 other people :c, better stop modding to show them that I mean business!

The scale is just so amazing. And I might be imagining this, but I swear the guy on the right has a kinda worried facial expression, something at least. I'm building an absolutely top of the line gaming PC just for Rome II. I want to finally be able to experience tens of thousands of little pixel people killing each other for my amusement at top quality, damn the expense. As for Darth, yeah he is being kind of whiny. Personally, I never really used Darthmod so I don't care much. Now if the Westeros guys were retiring, then I'd be right angry.
Darth sounds like a massive bitch boy
It wasn't just the event, at first he was considering stopping due to not getting invited, then a CA employee indirectly replied with: which darth took offense to, so he stopped
That's a very bizarre and vague remark for Craig to make. Seems to me that this matter could be resolved if he just explained what he meant, but, thusfar, he has made no effort to, even though a number of people (including Steph) have asked him. In fact, Craig seems pretty adamant about trying to avoid talking about this issue:
Firstly: this isn't a competition, so nobody should be offended. Secondly: we're making a concerted effort with the idea behind the summit to improve things for the whole community. I am sure in time the mod summit will be remembered as a good thing and an important step forwards.

We haven't said improving the AI behaviour isn't possible in mods. All we've said is some mods claim to do things that are impossible. But that's a side point. We're really just interested in throwing the best summit we can and ramping our support for modding up a notch.

We're not commenting on individuals who were or were not invited to the summit, we're simply focused on making the day as good and worthwhile as we can.
Then Jack Lusted decided to chime in with this unhelpful statement:
As developers we know what is and isn't possible within what modders can access. It's not a case of some modders doing surprising things, which modders always do, it is modders claiming things that are not possible without rewriting the game exe itself.
Vader is behaving childishly and acting like he's a victim, but Craig and Jack are being deliberately unhelpful and are only making matters worse in this by not taking a few seconds to explain their statements. So who the fuck knows what's really going on. I'm also curious to know why CA didn't bother inviting Husserl, yet invited Daniu. [editline]22nd September 2012[/editline] Too much drama.
