So the total war games are downloading slow for me and I so far only got Napoleon.
Which game should I download first and play besides Rome/Napoleon?
Medieval II. And Kingdoms, if you can. Always play the a game mod-free first, but once you've done that, head here and download the fuck out of the best mods in the series. You need Kingdoms to install any of those. My personal recommendations are Third Age (Lord of the Rings) and The Last Kingdom (Anglo-Saxon England and Viking Scandinavia).
Oh boy, I bet this sale is going to pump some new life into this thread, yippe.
Playing as the Mughals for the first time. They're actually really fun, if you can manage the unrest and underdevelopment in the early game, your set if you can unite all of India. Beware of the Westerners though(namely Britain), for they love dabbling in India.
I did this with the Maratha Confederacy, I ended up with an empire stretching from India to halfway across Africa.
Anyone got Fall of the Samurai? I want it but I'm not really willing to pay 37.49 for it, damn you Steam and huge your discounts for making me cheap...
Oh, man. I've spent hours trying to buy the Master Collection now (offering games in values of up to 40-60 bucks), but no luck so far. I really want that damn collection (for my friend, he'll give me the items).

Imo, I wouldn't go straight to those complete overhaul mods. For M2TW, you can't go wrong with DarthMod. Kingdoms is a toss-up. But I love the mods that add stuff into the game without changing the identity too much.
Gifted my friends Rome total war and Empire total war so they can get the same feeling I have when I play the games. Gonna have fun playing games with people I actually know for the next month of so... :v:
I did that once.
They all made shitty armies and played twice after that.
Co-op scenarios are fun though.
The unit AI in Shogun 2 fall of the samurai is so fucking awful, it means that the enemy AI can effectivly cheat it's way to victory, I have a perfect trap set up and when the enemy cavelry charge toward my line infantry, my line infantry do fucking nothing but sit around as about 60 horses charge straight for them, ffs I have auto-fire on, but do I even need to tell them to fire their guns when enemy is charging straight for them. The unit AI is also cowardly as fuck by comparison to the enemy, I had 2 brigades of cavelry in combat against 1 enemy brigade, both mine retreat after losing 20 men each, the enemy lost 48 men and didn't retreat. What the fuck Creative assembly.
no one knows how to speak fluent latin dude
same with every other language during that time period, no one thought "hey lets make a dictionary so people can make video games more realistic in the future"
Late to the party, but we have a fairly good idea of what Latin sounded like.
And the Romans totally made dictionaries too.
So I bought Rome for one euro, having never played any TW game thinking "what the hell, I'll try it"
I have NO idea what I'm doing but I'm loving every minute of it, the graphics are old as shit but the technology in gameplay is mind boggling
To think that they created this so many years ago just freaks me out :v:

So I'm guessing fall of the samurai isn't worth it?

That was the same with me a long time ago, I then got Medieval 2 and without ever playing it I instantly knew what I was doing and what everything did and I'm still confused on how that happened :v:

That's why we're still playing this stuff after all this time!
If you like the style of Rome, get Medieval 2 and the Kingdoms expansion as well! The games past Empire take on a different style in my view that isn't as fun.
Also, get on the Total War Centre forums and look up some mods like Roma Surrectum II, Stainless Steel and The Third Age. Once you're done with vanilla of course.
To anyone whose wondering, Fall of the Samurai is definately worth it (imo).
+It's campaign is engaging, as the allegiance system and the rapid modernization of Japan are reflected superbly, and the the land combat is the best out of any TW game. You have the perfect blend of the gunpowder combat from ETW/NTW, and the fast-paced sword and bow combat from Shogun 2. This blend also adds some much needed unit diversity to a fairly rigid rock-paper-scissors base game.
+The Naval combat has been revamped too, with big steaming warships and iron-hulled behemoths, which is a welcome addition to vanilla Shogun's stale ship combat.(still worse than ETW/NTW's though, again imo).
+The agents have also been revamped and can generally commit more actions per agent (more bang for your buck, baby!). Sadly though, the agent videos are missing, if that bothers you.
-My only real gripe with FoTS is that the aforementioned allegiance system mucks up diplomacy a bit. While it makes making and keeping alliances easier (assuming they're the same allegiance as you), it also makes any form of diplomacy with opposing allegiance factions nigh-impossible. While this does reflect the time period and fits within the setting for the game, it does remove some of the sandboxiness that the other Total Wars (aside from Napoleon) have.
Any more questions, feel free to ask.

Some of the mods out there have units that look so damn good, especially when compared to the base games which are just different colored versions of all the units.

What mod? Stainless steel?
Medieval 2 is 75% off.
Is there a user-made thing that gets rid of the horrible UI stretch in Medieval 2?
What mod? Stainless steel?
It's War of the West, well, the demo of it. It's in-progress, but they released a demo in which you can choose one of three finished factions and jump into some custom battles. And, they said they would continuously update it with any new finished factions.
So I'm guessing fall of the samurai isn't worth it?
Fall of the Samurai is fucking awesome.
Unlike the bullshit in the first S2:TW, the realm divide actually causes a huge war between the two allegiances rather than just having everyone declare war on you (although you can still do that if you go independent.) The AI cheats way less - they still get armies out of nowhere, but if they don't have money they will consist mostly of terrible levies.
The breechloading cannons are ridiculously powerful, but also ridiculously awesome.
The naval combat is excellent, with a focus on smaller numbers of faster, more powerful ships, and the naval bombardment is well-balanced and adds a new layer of strategic/battle map interaction.
And there's nothing quite as satisfying as watching rows of Samurai get blown to bits by the march of technology.

Yes, but we have no idea how they pronounced certain words. It's why Pompeii is so important, because the graffiti actually shows how they pronounced certain words. What letters were silent? What part of the word was stressed? We won't really know for a lot of the words.
But are't there conventions for speaking Latin? Like, all vowels are open and such.

Didn't the Catholic church preserve Latin fairly well though? In fact, aren't Catholics the only reason Latin is still around at all?

I guess I'll get it then if it then when it goes on sale.
Also how do I exactly enable the 40 unit thing for Darth Mod Napoleon? I add the save from the launcher, launch the save and I get the smaller cards like is supposed to happen but I can't go pass 20, am I missing something?
Worth buying Medieval II?
Friend bought me Napoleon and i'm having dickloads of fun, it's my first total war game.

Depends if you like the Middle Ages. I know with Empire, since I wasn't as interested in the time period, I find myself not enjoying it very much. But even so, I would say that Medieval II is the best Total War game to date. Except for the Pope, who can eat shit and die.

My primary goal with each and every game is to build a nation powerful enough to give the Pope and the Vatican the right fucking it deserves :v:
I find that i lose a lot more men than i usually do in M2:TW compared to R:TW, even on easy i lose much more than i do on hard on R:TW.
I don't really understand how Merchants work in M2TW. When I check the other faction's Merchants they're usually generating like, 300-500 florins per turn while mine are only 15-20. It's also really fucking annoying when France keeps sending some crazy experienced merchants all the way up to Russia to seize my assets.
huh.

I think Darthmod screwed up on historical population

*Florins
Anyway, I think how it works is dependent on the skill of your merchant, the resource, and how far away you are from home territory.
It's primarily dependent upon the distance
It's primarily dependent upon the distance
That explains why I make no money then....
Also, the AI cheats for sure, they can always kill my merchants.
