All the Rome nostalgia makes me want to fire it up again.
Also, this:

I thought I'd play some old games I loved this week so I bought Company of Heroes complete and installed Empire at War FOC.
So right now I am wondering how I never realized the underlining flaw in their singleplayer element.
In Company of Heroes I was on the fifth mission, where you have to capture a road and defend from a lot of tanks. Only on hard difficulty, I didn't expect it to be hard as it was only the fifth mission. Oh boy was I wrong. Throughout the entire mission tanks and infantry come from the far side of the map as you'd expect. They also come from the right side of the map. Every minute and a half roughly a Stug or a massive infantry wave shows up, so I had to constantly fucking juggle my Shermans and infantry to deal with them. Finnally I reached the right side of the map where they came onto the map from and captured all the sectors in that corner. I resume my offensive on the middle of the map.
Nope. They arrive out of nowhere, on that flank, in my territory anyway. I spent about 40 minutes doing the same fucking thing - trying to assemble a force with which to take the points, and juggling those forces back to get destroyed and damaged. I thought "oh, theres a secondary base there, destroying that must end the flanking right?" So I do the same thing again only this time I have 3 less Shermans. I destroy the HQ. They keep flanking. At this point I just send Shermans blindly into the objective points to blast everything to shit so one unit of Riflemen can claim them after.
In Opposing Fronts, the final mission in Caen, you have to defend Caen from a fuck ton of heavy tanks. Without warning, in the sector with all my HQ trucks, the road that all my requisitioned tanks came from, a King Tiger appears. Wow. In the two missions before enemies respawn if you retreat from the front lines. In COH, the difficulty in singleplayer comes entirely from bullshit scripted events and spamming you with tanks until you keel over and give up.
In Empire at War, I was doing Galactic Conquest mode with the Empire. It was one of the maps that cover half the galaxy as I wanted just a bit of practice so I could do a bigger one later. The "Empire" start with one planet. At every single Rebel planet there are 12 Correllian Corvettes and 13 X Wing Squadrons, as well as Tech 2 Stations. I could just about beat a Space Garrison like that with 4 Accumulators, 2 Tartans and 2 Broadsides. It got really boring as I was fighting the same battle over and over again. After capturing a few planets I built up my fleets, leaving Coruscant empty. The only planet with travel lanes to Coruscant was Fresia, which was controlled by the Rebels . Im looking at Fresia after I beat their Space Garrison when all of a sudden theres a fucking huge Consortium fleet out of nowhere in Coruscant's orbit that blows up my Space Station. Within 5 seconds I sent a fleet back. In the battle, they had a Tech 2 Space Station, and they overwhelmed me because they had a crap ton of Frigates. I didn't realize until the last second that the odds were so slim so my entire southern flank on the GC map had no fleet to defend it. How the fuck did they sneak past that a huge a fleet and build a Space Station in seconds?
In Shogun 2 on the difficulties higher than Normal the AI cheats by giving armies you attack free units. If you completely sack and destroy every building in a city in Medieval 2 and a nation takes that city, they can fully rebuild it in 3 turns even if their wealth is feeble. (and I am willing to beat Rome, Empire, Napoleon and Shogun too)
My point being, I am fucking sick of cheating AI and illegitimate means of making games difficult either through bullshit or by having to follow a boring routine to make progress. The hard difficulty on Rome 2 should focus on the AI making clever political decisions (and not in the style of M2) and building up efficient, well structured armies to crush you with. If making a difficulty harder than Normal requires AI cheating, there is something wrong with your game. I hope Rome 2 gets an AI that is "hard" because its intelligent, adaptable and efficient.
Tl:dr classics are overrated and difficulty levels are retarded
/rant
This so much. I gave up on my Germania campaign in Rome because the Brutii had literally endless fullstack armies complete with generals and artillery, and I couldn't march 5 fucking meters without a 3000 v 3000 man field battle.
It just gets really tedious, and I'd rather fight a clever AI than having to grind my way through the campaign.
Yeah, the cheating AI pisses me off to no end in any Total War game, but in M:TW2 Kingoms it got as far to make me actually ragequit the campaign.
I mean the Danish somehow magicly managed to raise 2000 men doomstacks consisting mostly of heavy feudal knights in their little castle, and they somehow did this every turn even though Feudal knights have a restock time of 11 turns at best. I mean it is just infuriating to finally defeat that big doomstack in a hard battle and see another one appear from thin air.
I hope R2 fixes this shit.
After spending tons of hours in rome and rome mods, i decided to start a medieval 2 campaign. I tried out England but it ended up boring as hell, whats an interesting faction to start me off in mtw2?

Any of the Italian factions are good plus you get OP as fuck Pavise crossbowmen years before anyone else.

Fight the fire with bigger fire, cheat the bastards back :v:
Give me some good mods for Kingdoms. Mostly looking for non fantasy ones though
Try Call of Warhammer (Or as it is known nowdays with derp name RAGE OF THE DARK GODS: BATTLE FOR THE EMPIRE)

HRE, France, Milan
I hope they reworked the way the AI builds units for Rome 2. Shogun 2 just becomes retardedly frustrating when out of nowhere, literally, a 20 unit stack led by a Daimyo and his son suddenly teleports in and starts fucking everything that moves.
I bought the Hattori clan pack(get it, its fucking sweet) and was placing Kisho ninja's near cities and capping them once they're empty. I siege a small empty farm province only to have the single samurai retainer turn into 3 generals, 2 light cav, 8 bow samurai, 4 yari ashigarus, and 4 bow ashigarus. Fuck you CA.

Italian factions are fun.
I'm trying to survive as Milan in my current game. I'm at war with Venice, Holy Roman Empire, Spain, and Hungary (my closests neighbors) because they're butt buddies with the Pope. They constantly siege my cities so I don't have a lot of room to expand.
I stopped playing m2tw when, as I was playing denmark and had conquered practically everything north past Brujes and its neighbouring city in france, after I finally defeated the mongols in russia while every other european country was attacking my cities, the fucking timurids came right after and started taking all the fucking lands I had recently retaken from the mongols (by the time the mongols arrived, i was finishing conquering russia and poland, which mind you, was fucking annoying).
I could deal with the timurids, but they're so fucking annoying to fight with. Who thought adding hordes of upgraded, quite powerful units, which you can only stop by camping in cities and castles, was a fun idea? Both the mongols and the timurids absolutely halted my game, so to say, as I could only focus on those and leave the ongoing war with europe for later.
Played Shogun 2 multiplayer and my opponent had basically gunpowder units only and raped me sepite me killing his general with a suicide light cavalry squad, what do in the future?
I forgot we had a total war thread, have you guys heard of the Great War mod for napoleon tw?

Oh, I didn't know there was a bugfix.
Been playing stainless steel as Genoa and holy shit. It's impossible to not make a giant profit as them.
I guess that has to do with the early game militia and how you can get the merchants guild within 3 turns.
[editline]16th October 2012[/editline]
Funfact. I expanded into France and took Sardinia with only ten guys lost, thanks to crossbowmen and shield walls in front of them. I took Balogna by giving the HRE 13000 and 200 per turn for ten turns.
Just took the castle east of Balogna and only lost 400 guys, most of them mercenaries and when I was scaling the walls with ladders.

Milan is next and I'm currently transporting the infantry to Pisa, where i can boat them to Genoa and form the two half stacks together.
Okay. So I ended up just bribing, I mean buying Milan.
I'm making like 8k profit a turn, and while I really like this, I'm not really enjoying the lack of unit variety and the massive reliance on spear militia and crossbowmen.
Going to start a viking game.

Get Stainless steel, super easy to install, and a FUCKLOAD of fun.
Been playing stainless steel
So as the Danes, I've started the swedish conquest with my heir as the main general and using viking raiders and spearmen, mainly to occupy cities. My general has 3 gold chevrons after three battles. Been using him as cav and havent really lost more than 3 bodyguards per battle. It's amazing how easy it is to route units when you charge vikings and heavy cav at them.
I'm wrong
oh
The byzantines can suck a dick, all of their armies are missile cav and there's shit all i can do against them. It's like the school bully stealing a fat kid's lunch and then stealing his money when he's too tired from the run.

don't engage them in the field.
missile cavalry are laughably bad in sieges. Just go straight for their towns.
Or you could be like me and have a ballista cause panic in the cav and then rush light cav at them, followed by heavy cav.

They're on the offensive, they have more armies and are laying siege to my towns. I don't think I have ballista makers yet, I'm playing on very hard/very hard and money is scarce.
