I think you can play with other people running the same mod. I'm not entirely sure, though.
Trench warfare was even not used much on the western front.
Only until the last few months when Germany was fighting a pure defensive war.
The western front as it was called was literally only a small stretch of land between two trenches that wiggled back and forth from the start to the end of the war. Immediately starting after German forces detoured away from Paris at the beggining of the war and both sides began the race to the sea creating fortifications.
Anyone else find the minor factions more fun to play as than the major ones? Some of them are quite playable too, Venice in ETW for instance.
Been playing as Sweden in NTW, it's the hardest campaign I've played so far in Napoleon...even harder than Ireland.

Note that all of France is Irish, and all of Germany is French.
Do I really need to play through the tiresome first two campaigns to get the great campaign in Napoleon?

Oh ya. I hardly ever touch the major/starting factions in the TW games. The only downside for post-Med2 minors is that they aren't meant to be played and they don't get unique units and diplomacy is absolutely broken.
"holy fuck camels"
Those were the last words of my great general, god damn Ottomans are no chance against my Iroquois warriors, only reason I lost was because I routed and destroyed all his infantry then get horse/camel charged out of nowhere. The picture of my team running with the reserve comment is great though :v:
Your probably right, good thing then I join their matches after they stress for the whole time no arty and I have a full army of unicorns and rockets and they rage quit.
Also that's the WW1 mod for Napoleon right? I need to download the empire one and face Duck online, assuming I can use these online?
I'd imagine you could I never tried it

Just start an Italian campaign, save it, start an eggy campaign, save it. Boom Europe is now unlocked.

This is a handful of games where the consensus was that changes was bad, mkay? It's not equal to ME thinking they were, but it is an indication that after the change. the IP value went to fuck in most cases. If not tangibly, then metaphorically. It's psychological. Doesn't matter if it Objectively is akin to Jesus' rebirth when subjectively, it makes all our collective anuses bleed in fear.
Human nature dictates that Change is bad and dangerous shit. How about we change societal norms before we change goddamn video games?

Just buy something different and fuck off. It's a free world, you're allowed to fuck off.
You do realize what you guys are doing right? You're people being on the fence wanting whatever you're about to enter into, to change in order to accomodate you. That's not how it works. You accomodate the majority. Don't be an obnoxious immigrant.
Buy something different? Is there a WW1 RTS with a turn based dynamic campaign on a world map with as much kick ass detail as the Total War series I don't know about?
I have officially lost all respect for Total War Diplomacy A.I.
Playing Napoleon as Sweden, my long standing allies, the Prussians, randomly declare war on me with no provocation whatsoever after I take Denmark. Austria, and Russia join against me soon after (Russia I expected, since I'm Sweden, but Austria was another ally of mine). Mind you, I was already at war with France, who was obviously at war with the coalition (Prussia, Russia, Austria; Great Britain remained Neutral).
What happened next will forever be a scar in my brain whenever I play Total War.
France, Prussia, Austria, and Russia all make peace with all of their enemies except me, and then become allies.
France and the coalition became allies to attack me, Sweden.

Reinstalled Medieval II and Kingdoms. Been wrecking shit as the Irish.
Is it just me that gets this:
Type any world map strategy game into youtube and the first suggestion to follow the game's name is the games name + "Irish Campaign"

Anyway time for legit tactics:
20 Galloglaigh
That is the tactic.
Got Roma Surrectum II working. Really good fun, yo.
So um. I was playing the WW1 mod and after a 20 minute battle, noticed this.

So...is it a glitch or did you do really good? Just want to clarify.
Hurrah for old Nosey!
Well, its not in your range, but I'd suggest Medieval II and its expansion Kingdoms.
Shogun with FOTS is pretty goddamn fun if you play an Imperial faction
Empire has the most re-playability, Shogun 2 is the most polished.
Napoleon is fun too, but it's not the one you want to use to get into the newer games imo.
Medieval II is the best one imo.
I found all the clans in Shogun to be far too similar, felt like there was no variation to the enemies besides a colour on the map.
Honestly get all of them. They go on sale a lot.
I wish I could play FOTS/Medieval 2 but my laptops fucked.
For the battle with only 11 losses, i had a huge trench line and in the middle was a forest. on both sides I had artillery and just relentless attacked the germans, forcing them to attack, but if they did, they would get shot to pieces.
I tried a Maratha Confederacy campaign today on very hard, jesus christ I got bored and fed up after about 2 hours and less than 10 turns of playing. It is so fucking frustrating that the Mughals keep raiding all my villages, completely walking through the intercept zones for my armies on the campaign map, I have to play cat and mouse and either spend 10 minutes doing a battle to annihilate the one unit parties or auto resolve and watch them run away to do it again. One time a raiding party withdrew 4 times and burned every village I had in my Capital region. Then, in battles, easy fights like 240 horsemen, 300 infantry/peasants vs 70 Mughal Qizilbashil Cavalry end with all my horsemen dead and half my infantry gone. One time I charged 2 units of full strength cavalry into an ongoing fight between 400 or so Bargir infantry and 220 something Qizilbashil Infantry. My cavalry got wiped out in less than 30 seconds and I was still losing the fight.
How is that supposed to be fun?
rant about using horsemen wrong.
How is that supposed to be fun?
they are not meant to fuck up moral, their job is to destroy it.
just rush them after you have half their force down, I'm pretty sure if I had 60 troops left and had 40 large men on large horses with long ass sabers, I'd run like hell.
they are not meant to fuck up moral, their job is to destroy.
Wrong. [sp]I see you edited, but to elaborate[/sp] They are meant to turn the tide of a battle, not make the battle in the first place and certainly not charge into full strength infantry regiments before they've been so much as seen by your own infantry. If your infantry are sort of losing, maybe both you and the enemy are wavering, cavalry can win the day (so can artillery but that's not nearly as flexible or reliable). Not only that, but having 3 or 4 units of cavalry in a 20 unit vs 20 unit army prevents the enemy can be useful to pick off survivors as they retreat, so you don't end up with 60 enemies you have to deal with behind your lines after they retreat.
Cavalry ranks up really fast for that reason. And if you use them right your cavalry will rarely lose more than 10% of their units' max strength per battle.

I did that against an entire horse armada
there were no surviors
I still reserve my cavalry, fuck losing 700 dollar troops.
I'd rather save money and mass infantry when doing auto battles.
also im going to finish up fighting russia, then commence operation play as a different country.

In my Maratha Confederacy campaign I was early on faced with 1:4 unit ratios against me and came out victorious. To be honest I don't know how it's possible to lose a battle of 240 horsemen vs 70, nevermind with that infantry backing them up. You're relying on cavalry and peasants too much. Back up your infantry with hindu warriors and don't get into melee fights with your line infantry. Also don't bother with peasants, they're not worth it.
And place your generals' elephants near one of the flanks. If you find you're losing on that flank you can quite easily charge in, kill 1/3 a unit in that one charge, and demoralize that enemys' entire flank.
[editline]25th October 2012[/editline]
Also the Maratha Confederacy is probably one of the most fun factions in the game. Give them a chance, they're not like European nations. Later on since they can't use fire by rank (FOR WHATEVER FUCKING REASON) you'll have to rely on elephants and melee infantry even more.

Alright fuck this, I rage-quit my Swedish campaign in NTW, Great Britain landed a full stack and just declared war. I'm at war with every single major faction save Spain.
