Those would be horrible TW games. No technological advancements, a virtually nonexistent economy, and the fights would just boil down to who can field a larger mass of undisciplined warriors. The Greek period is probably the farthest back you could go and make it enjoyable.
Even then, hoplite battles would become incredibly stale. Having to outmanoeuvre phalanxes, ugh. Edit: What about the early colonial era, or just before it? You know, King James, Louis XIV and such.

It could work with Ancient China though, they had tons of large scale conflicts. They were even nice enough to write a million scrolls about it too.
There is actually Game of Thrones mod for Medieval 2 kingdoms.
Actually I've already played that mod extensively. I know its not completed but there was a lot I enjoyed, just not a lot of substance. The full release is shaping to be very good though. I remember in my last game with that mod (I may go back and play some of it now that you've reminded me) was me being as the Starks and destroying the Reach, killing the Lannisters, murdering Joeffrey, and my only casualty being Rickon Stark. [sp]Nobody remembers Rickon! NOBODY![/sp]
Yeah, I find myself doing the same, until my fiancee finds the paper or Word Document I've been using to keep track of things and calls me a nerd for the next week.
I'll post a picture of my notebook; I'm SUCH a nerd. I've even designed some banners just to give the house holds some flair.

I'm going to grab a picture too.[/del] Never mind my fiancee threw them out.
again this next setting debate, seriously, 1600s europe, chinese dynastic wars there's plenty of interesting untapped epic scale settings in history left
What about Judea Total War where we can call God to rain fire on our enemies and have shepherd boys kill giants with stones.
They've never even attempted a game set in Africa. To see Islamic Caliphates in the north, Islam and China to the east, and a whole rainbow of tribes, nations, confederacies, and kingdoms to have unique units and tactics for. Not to mention the huge variety of landscapes, from savannah, to desert, to jungle, to plains. Best timeperiod? Either the 1200s-1600s, or around 200-1000AD.
Total War: Sticks and Stones
the first medieval game had north africa and some egypt. the islamic factions had imams and jihads n' shit
I would personally like Assyria: Total war
I was thinking something along these lines. The battles between the Egyptians, Persians, Medians, Israelites, and the Assyrians sounds pretty cool. How well would a total war game with this work in practice?

Ya know the Assyrians weren't exactly uncivilized. They had cavalry and chariots and cities with walls to defend them. A total war set around the Assyrian period could probably work out pretty well actually.
Do you guys know how to change the camera movement keys to WASD instead of the arrow keys in Rome total war?
How about a total war that encompasses a larger time period and more in depth economic system. Maybe late Roman period up the Inter world war period, 1920's/30's or so.

All the TW games are about moving forward technologically and "socially" for lack of a better term. Your military, economy, and(in the newer games) your government are constantly evolving. A game set in a truly Ancient era would become so tediously boring in no time with zero military advancements. Try starting up a game in Med2 and limit your army to just peasants and peasants archers. Now play with that for 200 turns and tell me how fun that is.
I would like to see a Total War based around the Far East because then you get to deal with the Mongolians aka the people who created the world's largest empire.
I would like to see a Total War based around the Far East because then you get to deal with the Mongolians aka the people who created the world's largest empire.
the mongols are in Medieval 2.
the mongols are in Medieval 2.
But it doesn't allow you to play as them and it doesn't go in depth with their government and economy. Plus you only saw a small portion of their actual empire. And then you have the Chinese, Indians, Koreans, and the various other nations that in the Fareast at the time.
But it doesn't allow you play as them and it doesn't go in depth with their government and economy. Plus you only saw a small portion of their actual empire.
DLV adds the Mongols as a 100% working faction if you really want to play as them.
Do you guys know how to change the camera movement keys to WASD instead of the arrow keys in Rome total war?
Hit F1 and change it to FPS style.
So im playing as the Tosa in FOTS, and all other imperial supporting factions have been destroyed except for me... :suicide:
So im playing as the Tosa in FOTS, and all other imperial supporting factions have been destroyed except for me... :suicide:
That's okay, the stupid backwards shogun supporters shall fall to your Armstrong guns and ironclads. You do have those right?
I would like to see a Total War based around the Far East because then you get to deal with the Mongolians aka the people who created the world's largest empire.
Technically, the British empire is the biggest empire in history.
That's only because of sea dominance. If were talking land holdings, it goes to the mongols.
That's only because of sea dominance. If were talking land holdings, it goes to the mongols.
Not true. At the peak of their empire, they had considerably more landmass than the Mongols ever had.
They were both very big. How about that?
They were both very big. How about that?
Nothing compared to my personal empire!
Trying to decide if I want to start a campaign in Shogun 2, FoTS, ETW, or NTW... First world problems.
NTW. Start as Britain, declare war on every nation in the first turn and never ever sue for peace.
NTW. Start as Britain, declare war on every nation in the first turn and never ever sue for peace.
I decided one better. Playing ETW as France, immediately started the French Revolution. Come at me Europe. (JK, I quit because the mod I made that changed France's color to blue broke as soon as the revolution happened. Back to the ugly Bourbon white.)
