what wtf, is there a way to unlock different factions in ETW or is that a mod? I thought you couldn't in empire.
it's editing a text file, iirc
I havent tried it. Fall of the Samurai is kinda like Rome to me.
You really don't need mods and it's already perfect on its own.
This quote could totally make it onto the back of a re-release of this game.
"Perfect" - Paul McCartney
So Denmark has been absolutely destroying me in Medieval 2.
I can't even fight back because my 8 star general is on the fucking crusade.
FUCK.

You have to download a Starpos mod. You can play every faction(+Pirates) except for emergent factions like Scotland/America/Naples. Minor nations however are very broken as they were never meant to be played. Diplomacy is a motherfucker compared to playing a vanilla faction. Technology research is wonky as shit. You don't get any "elite" units unless they are the control X territory based DLC ones.
I keep crashing when I get to the load screen that takes you to the main menu. Its a shame because I wanted to try out the gorgeous new Workshop maps I'd seen. The only mod I have is cost reduction one to make my next campaign intense far quicker, the early game of Shogun, FOTS or not just feels so boring as you're only waiting for the fun stuff and you're incredibly stressed having to manage 2-3 provinces and consider your next conquest and the repercussions of it (by the third province I find either noone else is at war with you or you need to go across water to another island) while thinking about goddamn rebellions.
I hate rebellions in FOTS. I modernized as fast as I could and that meant every other fucking turn a city or a castle or two would rebel with a militia stack and wreck my industry if my army in that province wasn't big enough yet to take them on. Of course its all a joke by the time you get Armstrong guns because even one battery is enough to wipe the floor with half of a militia army.
don't know why CA doesn't make all the little nations playable
they're already there in the first place, it only takes a little bit of tweaking. didn't the old games have loads of minor factions playable, or am I thinking of EU?
[editline]14th January 2013[/editline]
Also why do all the generals in S2TW have the same face that seems to say
"man I've seen some shit"

All of the Total War games since Medieval 1 have had some unplayable factions. A lot of them are fully playable with minimal bugs when you unlock them.
Notable unplayables that have great gameplay include:
Macedon, Pontus, Spain, and Dacia from Rome
Italian States, Genoa, Mughal Empire, Venice, Denmark, and Persia from Empire
Spain and Portugal from Napoleon. (Personally, I'd say NTW is the least friendly to minor factions)
Almost every unplayable clan in S2TW contains good gameplay. Honarable mentions to the Imagawa and Otomo (the latter went on to become a DLC clan).
Also, if you like playing the Unplayable factions but you want some actually good units, its only about 10 or 15 minutes of editing a few lines.
Continuing that damned guide.
Ships!
Sloops are your skirmishers of the sea, the fastest ship you can get earlier on. Has a decent amount of fire power, not a lot though.
Brig - The first warship you get. Slightly more guns then the sloop, but slower.
Sixth Rates are the first frigates you get, good for wresting earlier control of the seas. Also works as a support to bigger ships.
Fifth Rates are another early ship you get about 30 turns in, like the sixth rate except it has more firepower and it's slower.
Fourth rates are bigger, badder and meaner then then most of these ships. Holds about 40 guns to my knowledge and can wreck most of the ships that it comes across that aren't heavy first rates.
Third rates are starting to get seriously big here. Up to about two hundred men. Sixty guns just about, and a hella lot of firepower, these are getting into major firefights here.
Second Rates can hold a candle to first rates if used right, and if used in gangs can go toe to toe with a heavy first rate. Getting very slow here.
First Rates are your pride of the ocean, well almost. These suckers have about a hundred guns and all of these are 12 pound cannons.
12,000 men and a lot of smoke.

Whilst its nice that youve gone to the effort of writing this you havent really said anything we cluldnt have gotten from a quick glance at the unit cards in game which is a shame as from your original post I was hoping you were going to cover some stratergies youd found successful or similar. I get bored of just lining up my infantry and then hammering the enemy with arty to get them to move on into range.

It's more or less a new players guide.
Someone who hasn't played Empire yet.
But yeah, I don't have tactics really. I'm a complete failure at that but I can give basic ideas to people aren't used to the game, that was my purpose.

I'd love it if it got put into the OP, but that's only a dream.

What's the best gunpower based total war? Empire, Napoleon, or fots?
[editline]16th January 2013[/editline]
I have FOTS, but I hate the lack of any unit variety. If it's the best gunpower based one though I'll give it another shot.

Napoopan is my favourite by far.
It's Empire but better in every way minus the map.

If you want more unit variety then yeah, Napoleon is great.

Nothing is better than the solider's chatter in NTW.
"Oh Christ! They shot the corporal!"
Anyone wanna do a co-op/versus campaign together (Any of the games that have it), message me on steam.

I might get lynched for this, but I like Empire the most as far as gunpowder TW goes.
Sure, it's the weakest of the three as far as the battles go, but the the map is fucking massive; you can't beat Indian War Elephants charging into Cherokee tomahawk throwers.
If you like Napoleon's battles but miss Empire's map, check out my Napoleon Retrofit pack. It backports a lot of the changes from NTW into ETW, including tighter formations, deadlier artillery, faster reloading, and better particle effects.

The thing that annoys me about NTW is that it's basically only be/beat the french.
Playing FotS. Very hard difficulty, Aizu, 15th turn. Two full stack gunpowder armies march straight into the town I was given the quest to attack.
I assume this is that bullshit AI cheating everyone is talking about.

Not as bad as Rome's VHD AI.
Turn 3, 10 stack Gaul army with max armor.

A two-front war is basically a 'gg' in these TW games imo.
Enemies would immediately declare war upon you when they see a sudden change in your military power and they would have their own massive armies march into your cities and towns.
should I get darthmod for ETW?
Sure.
A propos minor factions and playability, all the unit dialogue is perfectly voiced in the native language. It's so bizarre that half the mechanics are fucked when you play a minor nation but for some reason all the units have multiple lines and multiple dedicated VAs.
"Si, signore!"
[editline]17th January 2013[/editline]
Then again all the linguistic options are shared between major and minor factions besides the Italian states which leads me to believe that at least one of them was intended to be a playable faction at some point.
I dream of an ai that is tough to beat without cheating so much
maybe one day
